The Center for European Studies is a Title VI National Resource Center and FLAS granting institution with grants from the US Department of Education, the Defense Language and National Security Education Office, and international grants through the European Union. We are a multidisciplinary area and language studies center focused on expanding awareness, interest and training in European studies across campus and the broader community. The Center facilitates the training of scholars and experts in European studies by providing a wide range of area studies courses in disciplines including history, sociology, political science, film studies, law, education, business, musicology, and many more. The Center promotes the learning of European less commonly taught languages (LCTLs) through language programs in Czech, Hungarian, modern Greek, Polish, and Turkish, and supports the other European language programs on campus through funding opportunities and outreach activities.

Lang. Training: Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (UW Madison)

The Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (CESSI) is an eight-week summer intensive language program for undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and professionals. Language courses are supplemented by a rich program of cultural events, excursions, and a weekly academic lecture series.

Course offerings each summer are dependent on student interest and enrollment. Typical course offerings include Kazakh, Tajik, Uyghur, and Uzbek. Languages are generally offered at the beginning and intermediate level, although advanced level courses may be offered with sufficient student interest. Additional languages, such as Kyrgyz or Azerbaijani, may also be offered with sufficient interest.

CESSI was founded in 2011 by a consortium of international and area studies centers at major U.S. universities. Since its creation, CESSI has been hosted by the Center for Russia, East Europe, and Central Asia (CREECA) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

CESSI is part of the Wisconsin Intensive Summer Language Institutes (WISLI), which offers training in more Less Commonly Taught Languages than any other university in the U.S. For more information, visit the WISLI website. Sign up to receive information from WISLI here.

Funding: Texas Career Engagement Internship Fund

UT Austin students have access to funding that supports participation in unpaid internships during spring and summer 2022.

When applying for internships there are many things you might consider, including your income needs. Texas Career Engagement created the Internship Fund to help reduce the financial barriers to internship participation. Through financial support, we aim to increase access to internships for all UT Austin students.

Students with financial need who are participating in unpaid internships are encouraged to apply for the TCE Internship Fund.

Through this Texas Career Engagement grant, students receive funding of $20 per hour up to a maximum amount of $4,000 based on internship hours completed between the first and last class day of the semester or term. Selected students will receive funds in two disbursements: the first after the application has been accepted and the second in the last weeks of the internship. The internship host-employer is required to submit a confirmation of the intern’s hours in order for the second payment to be disbursed. The amount of the funding may be recalculated based on the final total hours completed at the internship.

The amount of this fund is limited; therefore, not all applicants will be selected to receive funding.

Option 1: Volunteer, July 12-July 30 or July 12-August 14 – Novice high+ proficiency preferredIn this pilot program, volunteers will receive a week of orientation, including training in language teaching, camp counseling, and language training specific to their area of volunteer responsibility (e.g. leading gardening activities, working in our camp cafe, etc.) They will then spend part of the day leading activities in their area of volunteer responsibility and the rest of the day assisting regular staff in language classes, and being immersed in Russian language. Room, board, and transportation from the Minneapolis airport to the program in Bemidji, MN are included, but volunteers are responsible for their own travel to the Minneapolis airport. CFA: International Vladimir Nabokov Society Prizes

In 2018, the International Vladimir Nabokov Society established a group of prizes generously funded by the Vladimir Nabokov Literary Foundation. The first three rounds of prizes (2019, 2020, 2021) have been awarded and the winners of these prizes are listed below. IVNS is now accepting submissions for its 2022 round of prizes. Applications are encouraged for all eligible work.

Administration and Funding: These prizes are administered, selected, and awarded by the International Vladimir Nabokov Society, and funded by the Vladimir Nabokov Literary Foundation. In all cases they will be awarded only where there is work of sufficient merit. In the case when two winners share one prize, the prize money will be shared between them.

Timing: Prizes awarded in 2022 will be for work either submitted (in the case of undergraduate and postgraduate essays, theses and chapters), examined and accepted (in the case of the best dissertation prize) or published (in the case of the other prizes) in the calendar year 2021, except for the Brian Boyd Prize. The Brian Boyd Prize was awarded in 2019 for work published 2016 – 2018 and will next be awarded in 2022 for work published 2019 – 2021.

Language: Work can in principle be considered in any language. However, the judges have to be able to judge all entries fairly against one another; thus the only language in which contributions can be guaranteed consideration is English. If the judges have sufficient linguistic competence, they can judge work in other languages, and if they wish, commission expert reviewers in that language and consult with them.

Acad. Job: 12-Month Teaching Fellow in Russian Studies (Durham University, UK)

Applications are invited for a Teaching Fellow in Russian Studies. You will have research expertise and teaching experience in Russian Studies. You should be able to teach Russian literature, culture and history in a holistic way across different periods, with particular emphasis on the 19th and 20th centuries. You should have excellent Russian and also the ability to teach translation from Russian into English at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

If successful you will be fully integrated in the Russian Studies team within Durham University’s School of Modern Languages and Cultures and you will be expected to contribute to the delivery of teaching on the relevant programme, to include curriculum development, the convening of modules, all aspects of assessment, the supervision of final-year dissertations, and academic advising.

The role of Teaching Fellow offers the opportunity of valuable experience to those early in their academic career. Durham University is keen to maximise the career benefits of this role in terms of exposure to relevant departmental experience. The post of Teaching Fellow will involve a significant but rewarding teaching load, which may extend into the summer period, and includes administrative duties that relate to education.

CFP: Macalester College Student Research Competition

Every year, the Russian Studies department at Macalester College organizes a student research competition. This year, the competition will be in a virtual format and is open to undergrads at all U.S. colleges and universities. Cash prizes awarded!

(1) Submit the title of your project and an abstract to chadaga@macalester.edu by Monday, April 11. Your project should be based on a term paper, digital project, or part of a senior thesis on any topic relevant to Eastern/Central Europe, Russia, or Central Asia written in Spring 2021, Fall 2021, or work-in-progress from Spring 2022. Your abstract should provide an overview of your project, including its thesis and conclusions, and be no more than 300 words.

(2) Based upon the abstracts received, some participants will be selected to present their projects to the virtual public. These students will prepare slide presentations with voiceover (we will provide how-to instructions) and submit them by Monday, April 25. A panel of faculty judges will provide feedback.

(3) On Saturday, April 30, Macalester College will host a Zoom session with presenters, faculty judges, and guests. Each presenter will give a brief recap of their project and field questions. Afterwards, the judges will confer to select the top presenters, who will receive cash prizes.
