CFP: Russia and the Global Color Line (University of Illinois)

We invite submissions for a Junior Scholar Two-Day Workshop on theme of “Russia and the Global Color Line.” Probing the role of Russia in the global dimensions of the color line, this interdisciplinary workshop raises exploratory questions about the meanings and functions of racial identifications and categories; the relationship between race, whiteness, and geography; how Russia fits into the global dimensions of the color line; and when and why skin color emerged as an important element in the complex process of identity formation. We welcome proposals on these and other related themes and questions on all aspects of modern Russian history and culture. The workshop is open to advanced graduate students and early career scholars. Abstracts and papers should highlight the critical methodologies used in the work. Selected papers will be pre-circulated among the participants, to maximize opportunity for discussion.
The workshop will be held on July 14th and 15th 2022, as part of the Summer Research Lab at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. We are currently planning to hold the workshop as an in-person event, but we will, of course, monitor the pandemic situation closely and will switch to a virtual format if necessary.

Seminar: The History of State-Diaspora Relations in Central and Southeastern Europe Since the Late 19th Century

Examining the issue of state-diaspora relations in Central and Southeastern Europe since the late 19th century, the thematic issue of Dve domovini/Two Homelands (https://ojs.zrc-sazu.si/twohomelands) brings to light the intricacies of migrations, nation-building and sovereignty in an era of recurrent border changes and shifts of political regimes. Regulating out-migration and engaging presumed co-nationals abroad were interwoven with states’ politics of identity and belonging. However, as a result of border shifts and contradictory policies, diaspora building projects often backfired and increased the gap between the states and “their” emigrants instead of overcoming it.
The thematic issue will be presented on March 29, 4 pm (CET) at the online roundtable, organized by the Slovenian Migration Institute at the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies.

The Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia (WCEE) at the University of Michigan invites applications for WCEE Scholars at Risk Fellows from scholars at institutions of higher education in Ukraine. Applicants will be matched with a faculty partner at the University of Michigan. Candidates must have excellent oral and written English language skills; proficiency will be verified. The awards support one-year research visits to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and include round-trip airfare for fellow and up to two (2) dependents, visa support, health insurance, and salary. WCEE will grant up to three (3) awards. Selection of fellows will be made through a review of proposals at the University of Michigan. Prof. Dev: Masaryk Diplomatic Program

The Embassy of the Czech Republic welcomes applicants for the two-month-long Masaryk Diplomatic Program (MDP), designed for American university students as well as recent graduates interested in diplomacy, transatlantic relations, and U.S. relations with the Czech Republic. The application deadline is March 20, 2022.

The program consists of a series of workshops led by diplomats of the Czech Embassy in Washington and in the preparation and presentation of projects that will help deepen Czech-American relations and mutual cooperation. All of the workshops will be held on Thursdays at 4 pm.

When preparing projects in the form of a short essay, MDP participants will cooperate with selected mentors, from the embassy, or Czech experts, who will voluntarily participate in the project.

CFP: White Ink, Red Flag – Expressing Maternity in Eastern European Culture

The AHRC-funded Slavic and East European Maternal Studies Research Network (SEEMS) will host a one-day symposium on July 9th, 2022 in Exeter, UK at the historic Devon and Exeter Institution, Cathedral Green, Exeter. The symposium will explore maternal creativity and depictions of motherhood in Slavic and Eastern European cultures. The organizers (Professor Muireann Maguire, University of Exeter and Dr Eglė Kačkutė, University of Vilnius) welcome papers from a range of disciplines, including literature, art, cinema, and comparative cultural studies.
‘[A] woman is never far from “mother” […] There is always within her at least a little of that good mother’s milk. She writes in white ink,” wrote Hélène Cixous in her influential 1975 essay, ‘The Laugh of the Medusa’. The SEEMS research network aims to encourage and integrate scholarship from the field of Slavic and Eastern European Studies with the wider discipline of Motherhood Studies; for this symposium, we invite research on literary and cultural expressions of motherhood and parenting in the Eastern European sphere, the ‘white ink’ that was hidden for decades behind the ‘red flag’ of socialist politics and internal censorship.

You will contribute to the first-year module Making of the Modern World. You will also be expected to contribute to History’s jointly-taught core modules at undergraduate level. The Department of Central, Eastern, and Northern European Studies (CENES) invites applications for a 3-year limited-term full-time appointment in Slavic Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor Without Review, effective August 1, 2022. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Slavic Studies or a related field. Fluency in Ukrainian and possibly a further Slavic language is required, in addition to fluency in English. Applicants’ primary research focus must be Ukraine and/or the broader region around Ukraine. Approaches from literary studies, cultural studies, film, media, applied linguistics, and the like are welcome. The successful candidate will teach larger Anglophone courses and, perhaps, language courses in the second and third year of the appointment.

THE 11TH MACEDONIAN-NORTH AMERICAN CONFERENCE ON MACEDONIAN STUDIES will be held in person on November 4th – 7th at Arizona State University. The conference will be hosted by the Melikian Center: Russian, Eurasian and East European Studies, with support from the Mary Choncoff Fund at ASU. Proposals are invited for papers on topics in the broad area of Macedonian studies, including language, linguistics, literature, cultural studies, folklore, art, history, anthropology, sociology, and politics. The working language of the conference will be English. Those interested should submit a paper title and abstract of up to 300 words, and at least three relevant citations to scholarly literature which the paper will address. The abstract should fit on one page. Submissions should be as a pdf, with the (shortened) paper title as the file name. (To assist in the blind review process,) please do not include any identifying material in the abstract or its name. Submissions will be reviewed by the conference organizing committee. Abstracts should be submitted as email attachments to David Brokaw at mnacms2022@asu.edu. Study Abroad: AUCA-Bard College Study Abroad Program (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan)

Bard Abroad is excited to announce the introduction of a Russian Language Track through the AUCA-Bard Study Abroad Program in Kyrgyzstan. This track is open to students with at least two years of college-level Russian.

Although more than 30 years have passed since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Bishkek remains largely a Russian-speaking city, with Russian used as the common language between the many groups of people that call Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia home. Students will have the opportunity to use Russian in and out of the classroom, in home-stays, with student peers, and in daily life. With a rich history and culture of its own, a shared-Soviet experience and common customs and cultural traditions which transcend borders, Kyrgyzstan is a fascinating place to study Russian (outside of the European context) and experience post-Soviet society.
