Categories, Taxonomy and Terms

Last Updated January 2025

Categories contain Taxonomy Terms. Categories are sometimes called Taxonomy.

Some Content Types include the terms so content creators can segment, categorize and group like pieces of content. You can find details about your website’s categories on your website’s Dashboard.

Terms are primarily important on:

  • Landing Pages,
  • Listing Blocks and
  • they are also used by code scripts and feeds used to automate content sharing, such as sharing Events.

Creating, Editing and Deleting Terms

Content Creators can add & edit terms but cannot delete terms. If the term has been used and associated with a specific piece of content it must be manually removed from each Detail Page. Work with the Web team to remove a term.

Take special caution when editing categories that are fixed, see the Use on Landing Pages section above. Always check that the edits you make have the desired result on the relevant Landing page.

A link to manage Category Terms, and details about how the category is used on your site, can be found on the Dashboard.

If you need help, don’t hesitate to contact the Web team.

Typical Categories

Most of our sites have the following Categories used for the corresponding content types. Not all content creators use them, so there may not be any terms in the Category.

  • News Role-Based – Typically used for segmenting by staff, faculty, student, undergraduate, graduate and/or alumni.
  • News Types – Typically used for segmenting by areas of study.
  • News Authors – Not currently used on most sites but could be used for a Blog style news.
  • Profile Role-Based – Typically used for segmenting by staff, faculty, student, undergraduate, graduate and/or alumni.
  • Profile Expertise – Typically used for segmenting by areas of study.
  • Event Groupings – Typically used for segmenting by staff, faculty, student, undergraduate, graduate and/or alumni.
  • Event Types – Typically used for segmenting by areas of study. Also, frequently used to trigger automated sharing between websites.
