Hung-wen (Ben) Liu joins the Organic Letters Editorial Team.


Organic Letters welcomes Associate Editor Hung-wen (Ben) Liu Ph.D. Editor-in-Chief Amos B. Smith, III, and the Associate Editors of Organic Letters welcome Hung-wen (Ben) Liu Ph.D. to the Organic Letters Editorial Team. http://pubs.acs.org/orglett. Hung-wen (Ben) Liu earned his bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Tunghai University (Taiwan), and his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1981 where he studied under Professor Koji Nakanishi. His doctoral work included research on the additivity relation in exciton-split circular dichroism curves and its application in structural studies of oligosaccharides. After completing his doctorate he joined Professor Christopher Walsh's group at MIT as a postdoctoral fellow specializing in mechanistic enzymology. In 1984 he joined the faculty at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Minnesota. In 1999, he was promoted to Distinguished McKnight University Professor. Dr. Liu recently joined the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Medicinal Chemistry Division of the College of Pharmacy at The University of Texas at Austin where he holds the George H. Hitchings Regents Chair in Drug Design. Dr. Liu's research lies at the interface of chemistry and biology. He is motivated by the challenge of applying chemical methods to devise solutions to biological problems. His current focus is on elucidating the molecular basis of a variety of biological catalysts and processes that are both physiologically important and mechanistically intriguing. Together with his team, he is working to understand the functions of these catalysts and processes and to design rational methods to control or mimic their actions. His work has been recognized by several awards including the 1993 Horace S. Isbell Award from the American Chemical Society Carbohydrate Division, and a MERIT Award from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences in 1999. Dr. Liu is the co-author of over 140 scientific articles published in a variety of scientific magazines. Dr. Liu is also an active member of several professional societies, serving on many review panels, advisory and editorial boards. American Chemical Society Publications. High quality. High impact.
