Recurring Internships available at the Texas Civil Rights Project

Volunteer Intake Intern
The Texas Civil Rights Project regularly seeks volunteers to assist in our client intake process. Volunteers should be able available 10 hours per week. Interns must be available Thursday afternoons between 12:00pm– 5:00pm and willing to make at least a semester long commitment. Interns will have the opportunity to work closely with attorneys in evaluating potential cases. Responsibilities for this internship include fielding calls from the public who have experienced civil rights violations, evaluating potential cases, following up with potential clients, reviewing documents, preparing open records requests, and other tasks as needed. We get a large volume of calls which cover a wide range of topics. This position is ideal for undergraduates or recent graduates seeking exposure to the practice of law and interested in protecting human rights. Spanish proficiency is a plus but not necessary. This internship is available during the fall, winter, and spring.

Volunteer Prison Litigation Intern
The Texas Civil Rights Project regularly seeks volunteers to assist in litigation representing indigent inmates whose civil rights have been violated. Volunteers should be able to work 10-15 hours a week and able to make a semester long commitment. Interns will have the opportunity to work closely with attorneys in evaluating potential cases. Responsibilities include screening inmate mail, corresponding with inmates, preparing open records requests, reviewing discovery documents (such as medical records, grievances, etc.), and other tasks as needed. This position is ideal for undergraduates or recent graduates seeking exposure to the practice of law and interested in protecting human rights. This internship is available year-round.

Volunteer Development Internship
The Texas Civil Rights Project regularly seeks volunteers to assist with nonprofit development work. Development intern duties include clerical work, donor solicitation and management, grant research and writing, event planning, and answering phones. Interns should be available to volunteer a minimum of 10 hours per week for at least one semester.

Velocity Prep – ECOAudit Program Facilitator Internship

The ECOAudit Program Facilitator Intern will work with a group of 20-30 high school students at Del Valle HS to complete a semester of project-based professional work.

The ECOAudit intern will mentor the students as they develop a business plan for optimizing cost savings and sustainability by conducting a comprehensive water, waste and energy audit of their high school.

***NOTE – this internship pays a flat stipend of $2,500 for the semester. Students applying for this internship will have a short phone interview***

The ECOAudit Program Facilitator Intern will collaborate with the STEM Director and other program coordinators to assure team development, student performance, and project delivery.  In turn, the Facilitator Intern will gain valuable experience working directly with industry professionals, serving as project manager for a large group, and preparing a project summary report.

This internship supports the Velocity Capstone program (http://www.skillpointalliance.org/node/116) sponsored by Skillpoint Alliance. Skillpoint Alliance works to connect community, education, and business.

Responsibilities include:
• Project Development – Collaborating with Skillpoint staff and Velocity Capstone industry professional(s) to define the project, set up a timeline for project completion, determine how to measure the effectiveness of the project implementation, as well as ways to evaluate the final product.

• Project Implementation – Serving as “sounding board” for student brainstorming and ideas, coordinating student engagement with industry/subject matter experts (e.g. site tours, guest lectures), modeling productive work habits, positive attitude and effective professional relationships, helping students to students to set up and maintain a project schedule, developing ways to hold students accountable for their progress, and addressing student motivation and performance issues as necessary;

• Project Documentation – Managing documentation for all Velocity Capstone program operations; preparing a summary report describing project goals, accomplishments, student outcomes, expenditures, and suggestions for improvement; overseeing the development of written and presentation deliverables including, but not limited to: memos, business plans, and PowerPoint presentations;

• Connections to the Classroom – Developing a 5E lesson or unit plan for use in the secondary classroom based on the experiences/resources generated by the project.

Desired Qualities:

Required Skills
• Project management skills (effective and efficient communication is critical)
• Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
• Some experience working with youth
• Ability to work as part of a team
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint
• A or B in undergraduate Science and Math courses

Education Experience

*Must have completed Step 2
• Currently pursuing or completed higher education in a relevant subject area such as, but not limited to: Civil or Electrical Engineering, Energy & Water Planning, Architecture, Science, Public Policy, Mathematics or STEM Education

Preferred / Additional Skills
• Knowledge of/interest in project topics including renewable energy, solar technology, water planning, and/or civil engineering
• Interest in youth/education, nonprofits
• Familiarity with business planning, accounting, and consulting services
• Previous project management experience (e.g., student organization leadership)
• Familiarity using a computer assisted drawing (CAD) program, (e.g., Autodesk, Google SketchUp, Adobe)
• Possess basic level Photo, Audio, and Video editing skills.

HealthStart Spring 2013 Internship: Communication/Marketing

Salary: Paid – Stipend $250/month

COMPANY OVERVIEW:
HealthStart is seeking an intern interested in helping change the world for the better through public relations and communications. Our primary purpose is to improve child health. HealthStart’s vision is that all children will learn how to be healthy from a young age. Our mission is to create healthy communities starting with early health education.

HealthStart has developed a comprehensive, robust health and science curriculum, Health Education for Youngsters! that includes 9 teachers guides, resource materials, parent information and more. The curriculum is currently being taught in 12 preschool and elementary schools in Central Texas to about 350 kids. HealthStart hopes to triple that number in the next school year with your help.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Health Start is currently seeking a part-time Spring 2013 intern with highly developed communications/ public relations skills who can work about 12-15 hours per week. You will be part of a team shaping HealthStart’s message through social media including daily Facebook and Twitter posts, quarterly newsletter production, donor correspondence and management and related tasks. All of these experiences should be highly transferrable to a professional communications work environment.
Job responsibilities will include:

  • Working directly with HealthStart’s Development Committee on Social media posts and updates
  • Writing HealthStart’s Spring Newsletter
  • Assisting with Fundraising and event planning and promotions
  • Donor Management and Correspondence
  • Other communications and public relations related tasks as assigned

Qualifications
Candidates for the position must have experience with basic design, marketing, advertisement, social media, website development, or related activity. Employment experience or a strong interest in social entrepreneurship, social marketing, health and wellness or early childhood education is preferred. Experience with website maintenance a plus. Must be familiar with basic computer operations including MS WORD, EXCEL, and the Internet specifically social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, MyEmma, etc. In addition, candidates should have some or all of the following skills:

  • A willingness to learn new things or new ways of doing things
  • Ability to meet deadlines with little or no daily onsite supervision
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and communication skills
  • Enthusiasm about making a difference
