White House Office of Presidential Correspondence Seeking Spring 2014 Associates – 9/20 Deadline

The White House Office of Presidential Correspondence facilitates an open dialogue between the President and the American people. The office’s mission is to listen to and understand the stories and concerns of the American people, and to connect the President with experiences and ideas from across our country.

The Office of Presidential Correspondence (OPC) Associate Program is currently accepting applications for the spring 2014 semester.  Associates work alongside our staff and interns, gaining valuable professional experience while learning about the White House and the Federal Government. Our associates serve in our office for a minimum of 30 hours per week.

Eligibility:
Applicants must be at least 18 years old and hold U.S. citizenship, and they must be currently enrolled in or recently finished with a degree seeking program. The spring 2014 program lasts from January 14 – May 28. This is an unpaid position.

Fall Internship Positions with the Anti-Defamation League

The Anti-Defamation League in Austin is looking for fall interns for each of the following departments: Education, Development, and Civil Rights.

PRIMARY FUNCTION
Under direct supervision, participate in day-to-day operations and projects within the Division/Department/Regional Office in order to learn real-world transferable skills and gain work experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary:
Shadow the respective manager, and designated colleague(s), to gain real-world work experience in, and a greater understanding of, the respective field of interest.
Participate in Division/Department/Regional Office meetings to gain a better understanding of the mission of ADL and familiarity with community service work.
Read print and electronic media on topics connected to the ADL mission.
Under direct supervision, conduct research, prepare memos and letters, and draft meeting minutes in order to gain experience in the implementation of community service work.
Gain a better understanding of field of interest by participating in special projects in the fields of development, civil rights, international affairs, education, community service, management, or other areas of interest.

Secondary:
Provide clerical assistance as needed.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
None.

QUALIFICATIONS
1.       Skills

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Research skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate commitment to ADL’s mission.
  • Experience in Microsoft Word.

2.       Work Experience:

  • Prior volunteer or work experience helpful.

3.       Education:

  • High School student, matriculated college student, or recent High School or college graduate.

Undergraduate Research Opportunity working with Pollinator Behavior and Ecology

Description

This research examines nutrition, behavior, and colony development in bumble bees. Using methods in experimental biology, population biology, and molecular ecology, we examine how bees respond to changes in floral resource availability and nutrition, and how this ultimately influences population-level processes and conservation efforts.

Qualifications

• Interest in animal behavior, conservation biology and/or field ecology
• Attention to detail
• Highly motivated and able to work independently
• Basic computer skills (Word, Excel)

Project Timeline

2-4 semesters (flexible), with possible fieldwork in summer

Duties

Responsibilities may include:

– behavioral observations
– DNA extraction
– bumble bee collection/monitoring
– data management
– vegetation surveys
