Komen Austin Internship

Education and Community Outreach Intern                                                                                                                       

Reports to: Vice President of Mission Services & Community Outreach

Position Status:  Intern (unpaid); Course Credit offered

Time Commitment: 15-20 hours per week (15 hrs. minimum anytime M-F between 9am-5pm)

Position Overview & Basic Function:

The Mission Services position is designed to provide professional development opportunities to students entering the work force in public health. The ideal candidate has an understanding of the Komen Austin Affiliate’s vision/promise, has a strong understanding of basic public health principles and how to implement them in the non-profit sector, is passionate about helping the underserved communities, and is an independent thinker and reliable professional whom is dedicated to this position. Strongly preferred: someone currently pursuing or who has obtained a degree in Health Education, Public Health, Community Health, Sociology, Anthropology or a closely related field.

Primary Responsibilities:

Outreach/Education-

  • Work with Office Coordinator to order educational material; manage supplies and materials
  • Work with VP of Mission to refine and implement outreach/education plan
  • Write newsletter article communications with Hispanic and African American women’s groups
  • Assist with the identification of events for both groups
  • Assist VP of Mission Services with miscellaneous projects as needed
  • Work with staff, and interns to assure communication is relayed on all events and assist and seek assistance as needed

Community Profile-

  • Data analysis and interpretation; seek out trends
  • Draft written reports
  • Update Community Profile PowerPoint as needed

Grantees-

  • Attend site visits
  • Attend Round Table meetings
  • Fulfill request and supply grantees with education materials and supplies
  • Fulfill miscellaneous requests of grantees
  • Assist with GeMS data management
  • Provide preliminary data reports

Required Knowledge & Skills:

  • Proficient in using MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Word, and MS Outlook
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Efficient time management and responsible project planning skills
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet office deadlines
  • Some college coursework or comparable professional experience
  • Bi-lingual or multi-lingual is a plus

Other:

  • Commitment to completion of an engagement in project assignments
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Hours may vary from the standard 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. based on upcoming events. Evening and weekends may be required.

Susan G. Komen® Austin is an Austin-based nonprofit committed to saving lives locally and fighting breast cancer globally. Komen Austin is the only local breast cancer organization attacking the disease on all fronts – education, screening, treatment, follow-up care, survivorship support, advocacy and research. The organization serves the women and men in the city’s five-county area battling breast cancer by removing barriers to care for the uninsured and underinsured. Of the funds raised annually, Komen Austin invests up to 75 percent into local community health care grants and educational initiatives; the remaining 25 percent is invested into global research studies to find the cures for breast cancer.

Travis County Model Court for Children and Families Internship

Student Internship – Travis County Model Court for Children and Families

The Travis County Model Court for Children and Families is a multidisciplinary community initiative started in September, 2008, to help facilitate systemic improvement of the court and child welfare systems.  The work of this Model Court is focused on promoting successful outcomes for approximately 1,450 children and their families in Travis County who are involved in civil lawsuits filed by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (the state child welfare agency) as a result of findings of child abuse and neglect.  This Model Court is part of a national network of similar model courts.  It is supported by the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, which provides organizational support and technical assistance.

What You Will Learn:

  1. Understanding of the Court’s role in addressing and handling Civil Child Abuse and Neglect Cases.
  2. Collection and Analysis of Court Data with an eye toward system improvement.
  3. Assist the Judge and Judicial Staff Attorney with specific projects related to child welfare and teen pregnancy.
  4. Plenty of additional opportunities in related projects.
  5. Opportunities to attend and participate in collaborative community initiatives working to improve the court and child welfare systems.
  6. We value all of our interns and will go the extra mile to make sure you receive a learning experience that fits your academic goals.  We will provide training, supervision, and guidance. You will also learn how to work in a professional environment and have ample opportunity to network with leaders in the child welfare field in Travis County.

What We Require:

  1. Strong communication skills.
  2. Organized, with an ability to prioritize time-sensitive assignments.
  3. Creative and Flexible.
  4. Must have your own laptop computer and be able to work a mix of remote hours and hours at the Travis County Courthouse located at 1000 Guadalupe Street.
  5. Prefer individuals who have experience with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
  6. Prefer individual with interest in child welfare and generally socially conscious individual.

Details:

  1. Starting and Ending dates of this internship are flexible.
  2. You are expected to work 160 hours over the course of a semester. We understand you are a student first and will work around your course schedule.
  3. The internship is unpaid.

Knight Center Paid Internship

We wanted to share an opportunity for a paid internship at the Knight Center.

Are you savvy in social media and passionate about journalism, freedom of expression and Latin America? Do you need to make some extra cash?

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas is looking for a UT student (undergraduate or graduate) to help grow our presence on social networks.The Center runs a distance learning program for training journalists around the world, produces a blog on journalism and freedom of expression in Latin America and the Caribbean and hosts the International Symposium for Online Journalism, among other activities.

The social media hire will work with Knight Center’s team to help to expand the Center’s presence on Twitter and Facebook, market our courses and promote blog posts. Fluency in Spanish and strong writing skills in English are required. This is a paid internship and may be considered for academic credit.
