Food Waste Data Collection and Analytics Internship – Fall 2021

Throw-A-Weigh

Throw-A-Weigh is an Austin start-up that began in a UT classroom. From presenting at SXSW and winning numerous pitch competitions and awards, we are proud to now be working with our first pilot test client. Throw-A-Weigh is a novel technology that helps grocery stores measure, manage, and reduce food waste.

We are currently looking for help specifically with data collection and analysis. This is an unpaid internship. The only requirement TAW interns will need is self-starter attitude, excellent communication and organization, and transportation to be able to work at a S. Lamar grocery location. Additional skills and resources that are helpful and highly preferred, but by no means required, include: electrical engineering, coding, data analytics/tableau/excel/data mining, food science, organic and biochemistry lab.

Undergraduate Research Assistantships with the Prevention Research Lab – Fall 21

The Prevention Research Lab is looking for undergraduate research assistants!

The Prevention Research Lab, led by Dr. Keryn E. Pasch in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education, is searching for undergraduate research assistants beginning Fall 2021. Undergraduate research assistants (URAs) will work on one of two projects related to the marketing of unhealthy products (fast food, sugar sweetened beverages, and alcohol) during the COVID-19 pandemic. One project will audit the Twitter pages of leading companies that sell these products (e.g., McDonalds, Coca-Cola, Bacardi) with an aim of documenting how social media marketing tactics adapted to the pandemic. Another project will examine television commercials for these products, with the aim of describing how commercial marketing for unhealthy products has changed throughout  the pandemic.

Additional research opportunities such as literature searching, transcribing, and data summaries may be available.

REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to commit approximately ten hours of work per week during the Fall 2021 semester.

Research lab will still be working remotely so ability to work from home. Attendance at virtual lab meetings encouraged but not required if schedule prohibits.

Prior research experience is a plus but not necessary.

Applicants who are able to commit to the fall and spring semesters will be given priority. However, if you are graduating in fall 2021, you will still be considered.

Activity Specialist/Instructor Positions Available with Austin’s Parks and Recreation Department

Purpose of Position:

The Inclusion & Adaptive Programs Activity Specialist is a temporary/seasonal staff position scheduled to work between 20 and 40 hours per week in a recreation programs setting specializing in adaptive programming for special needs. The Centralized Programs Inclusion Unit provides assistance to participants with special needs that might be at several varying recreation centers. Successful applicants must demonstrate strong leadership, exhibit creative thinking, exercise good judgment, and have excellent communication skills.

DUTIES, FUNCTIONS, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  1. Have the willingness and ability to work with children and teens, including youth with special needs.
  2. General supervision to maximum assistance of individuals with disabilities ages 6 to 22 years and adults. Safely facilitate and actively supervise participants at all times while engaging in a variety of activities.
  3. Developing, scheduling, and conducting program activities for ages 6 to 22 years and adults. Develop, modify and teach program activities to accommodate various ages, abilities and interests.
  4. Ensuring that all events and activities conform to appropriate safety guidelines and other rules as well as modifying for maximum participation.
  5. Serve as a role-model, exercising appropriate decision-making boundary setting.
  6. Completing forms and maintaining records as in accordance with the City of Austin (COA) and with the Parks & Recreation Department (PARD) policies and procedures.
  7. Ensuring the facilities and equipment being used for programs or events are properly set up and maintained.
  8. Utilize effective behavior management skills, including enforcing policies fairly, consistently, kindly and firmly.
  9. Maintaining inventory of supplies, tools, and equipment.
  10. Work cooperatively with co-counselors and other staff.
  11. Coaching recreational and sports activities as needed.
  12. Safely transporting children to and from various locations around Austin, including swimming pools, parks, museums, and other attractions.
  13. Answering the phone, providing excellent customer service, and assisting with other clerical duties.
  14. Communicate clearly and professionally with, participants, parents, co-workers and supervisor.
  15. Following Departmental Policies and Procedures and adhere to safety guidelines.
  16. Complete reports and forms and assist with maintaining records in accordance with COA and PARD policies.
  17. Regular attendance is essential for this position.
  18. Attend regular assigned schedule is essential.
  19. Attend all sessions of scheduled staff training. Activity Specialist or Instructor
  20. Other duties as assigned.
