Austin Resource Recovery Spring Internship Positions Available – Apply now if you’re interested in working on Zero Waste initiatives!

Austin Resource Recovery, Strategic Initiatives Division
Start Date: Jan/Feb 2013, minimum 20 hours per week
Term: 6-12 months

Purpose:
Austin Resource Recovery (a department within the City of Austin) is looking to hire several interns to help administer various Zero Waste initiatives. In particular, the Strategic Initiatives Division of Austin Resource Recovery is looking for students with a strong interest in business environmental responsibility and public policy related to sustainability.

Specific projects may include research on topics related to resource recovery, waste diversion and materials management. Students may be asked to respond to business requests, write reports, and make recommendations to staff.  Additional responsibilities may include support for ordinance development and implementation, assistance for existing programs, and providing analysis for process improvements. Other duties may be assigned.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
Essential duties and functions may include the following.

  1. Performs internship duties in accordance with all City of Austin policies and procedures.  All work will be approved and supervised by Austin Resource Recovery staff.
  2. Gathers data, provides thorough analysis, and makes written recommendations to meet program objectives.
  3. Assists in planning, scheduling, and establishing objectives
  4. Assists in outreach efforts to the community on the phone, by email, or in person
  5. Coordinates meetings with stakeholders to identify or clarify Zero Waste issues
  6. Researches and writes reports  for committees, business presentations, community education
  7. Understands and clearly communicate the details of recycling, organics, and other waste diversion processes

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Professional written and verbal communications with the public
  • Able to write and speak clearly and succinctly to communicate complex ideas
  • Self-motivated and able to work well with minimal supervision
  • Able to prioritize multiple tasks and able to work with frequent interruptions
  • Able assist with the development and execution of presentations to diverse audiences
  • Able to establish and maintain good working relationships with other city employees
  • Bilingual communication ability in Spanish is preferred, but not required

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in Planning, Environmental Science, Business, Engineering, Natural Sciences, Economics or related field.
  • Interest in municipal government, environmental issues, and/or the resource recovery industry
  • Must be in good academic standing by the college/university standards

State of Texas Alliance for Recycling – Spring Semester Internship

Organization information:

State of Texas Alliance for Recycling, 501(c)3 nonprofit in the Austin area. We are committed to our mission of increasing recycling rates to the highest level afforded by balanced economic and environmental sustainability principles, for the benefit of the State and the people of Texas. We have a team of two full-time and one part-time staff, a Board of Directors, 14 affiliated councils, and partnerships at the national level. The State of Texas Alliance for Recycling (STAR) is looking for individuals eager for nonprofit experience in the Austin area. Our interns handle a range of tasks including:

  • Assisting with communications, PR and copywriting needs
  • Contributing to our organization’s website
  • Ordinance research
  • Administrative and office duties
  • Attending STAR events and conferences
  • Helping out with digital/new media
  • Data input and management

Skill requirements:

Strong written and verbal communicative skills; detail-oriented, self-starter   who is organized and able to meet deadlines; strong research skills;           computer skills: Microsoft Word and Excel

Job requirements:

Must have a college degree or be currently enrolled in a university and working toward a degree; must be a US citizen; must be located in the Austin area and have reliable transportation; must be able to work a minimum of 10 hours per week

Accepting Applications for Summer Public Health & International Development Internship in Uganda – Summer 2013

About Uganda Village Project

The Uganda Village Project (UVP) is an international public health organization that works with people of Iganga to promote public health and sustainable development in the rural communities of Iganga, in southeast Uganda.

Summer 2013 Internship Opportunity

We are currently accepting applications for our Summer 2013 internship program. Interns spend 8-9 weeks living and working in a village in rural Iganga District, Uganda, gaining experience in public health, community education, and international development. Interns work in diverse teams composed of Ugandan and non-Ugandan team members. Interns will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities in several focus areas, including water, sanitation, HIV/AIDS, nutrition, malaria, and reproductive health.

Intern Qualifications

We are looking for individuals who are passionate and have experience in public health, medicine, or international development. We give extra consideration to individuals who have prior experience working in developing and low-resource settings. Ideal applicants are those who have a strong interest in development and/or global health and are looking for a cross-cultural and entrepreneurial opportunity to work in a rural setting. All interns must be at least 18 years old. Historically, interns have come from all around the world as medical students, graduate students, undergraduate students, and professionals.

Internship Program Dates

Team Leaders: Monday, June 17, 2013 – Tuesday, August 20, 2013 (9 weeks)
All Interns: Thursday, June 20, 2013 – Saturday, August 17, 2013 (8 weeks)
Internship Fundraising Requirement

Once accepted, all interns are required to fundraise $2,000 USD for UVP, in addition to a deposit of $500 USD. The deposit is refundable upon successful completion of the program. This sum includes a donation towards UVP’s programs in Uganda as well as pick-up and drop-off at Entebbe Airport, orientation costs, room and board, in-country transportation, food, and Uganda-based staffing costs. All interns are required to individually purchase airfare to and from Entebbe Airport in Uganda.
