Fall Internships with HealthStart – Deadline 8/25

Non-profit HealthStart is seeking two interns for the fall semester: one intern will focus on fundraising, public relations and communications; the other will focus on educational programming.

About HealthStart:

HealthStart’s primary purpose is to improve child health. HealthStart’s vision is that all children will learn how to be healthy from a young age. Our mission is to create healthy communities by teaching young children good health basics before they are old enough to develop bad habits that lead to poor health and conditions like obesity.

HealthStart has developed a comprehensive, robust health and science curriculum, Health Education for Youngsters! that includes 9 teachers guides, resource materials, parent information and more. The curriculum will be taught in 27 preschool and elementary schools in Central and South Texas to about 800 kids in the 2013-14 school year. HealthStart hopes to increase our organizational sustainability and put a communications road map in place with your help.

Communications Intern

Health Start is currently seeking a part-time Fall 2013 intern with highly developed communications/ public relations skills who can work about 12-15 hours per week. You will be part of a team shaping HealthStart’s message through social media including daily Facebook and Twitter posts, quarterly newsletter production, donor correspondence and management and related tasks. All of these experiences should be highly transferable to a professional communications work environment.

Job responsibilities will include:

  • Press Releases and helping raise HealthStart’s profile within our community
  • Helping develop a media and communications plan
  • Working directly with HealthStart’s Development Committee on Social media posts and updates
  • Writing HealthStart’s Spring Newsletter
  • Assisting with Fundraising and event planning and promotions
  • Donor Management and Correspondence
  • Other communications and public relations related tasks as assigned

Qualifications:
Candidates for the position must have experience with basic design, marketing, advertisement, social media, website development, or related activity. Employment experience or a strong interest in social entrepreneurship, social marketing, health and wellness or early childhood education is preferred. Experience with website maintenance a plus. Must be familiar with basic computer operations including MS WORD, EXCEL, and the Internet specifically social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, MyEmma, etc. In addition, candidates should have some or all of the following skills:

  • A willingness to learn new things or new ways of doing things
  • Ability to meet deadlines with little or no daily onsite supervision
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and communication skills
  • Enthusiasm about making a difference

Compensation:
Salary: Paid – Stipend $250/month

Education Intern

HealthStart is currently seeking a part-time Fall intern with an interest in education, nutrition, kinesiology or child health and the ability to think creatively and work 15 hours a week. You will be part of a team working to ensure that HealthStart meets its mission by helping develop abbreviated versions of our curriculum, collect evaluative data, and maintain contact with our teachers and education site administrators. You may help ensure that HealthStart’s Health Education For Youngsters! (HEY!) is aligned with Texas Education Agency (TEA) and the National Association for the Education for Young Children (NAEYC) accreditation standards. All of these experiences should be highly transferable to any professional work environment.

Job responsibilities may include:

  • Work closely with Education Director and Executive Director
  • Research TEA and NAEYC accreditation standards.
  • Ensure all materials are copy written
  • Adapting curriculum materials to be used in alternative settings such as doctors offices and after school programs
  • Write materials to educate and engage families to make changes that positively impact their health.
  • Assist with grant application submission.
  • Research evaluation and other tools to measure parent engagement.
  • Other related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:
Candidates for the position must have education or work experience writing technical documents, conducting research, or related activity. YOU MUST BE AVAILABLE FRIDAYS FROM 2:30P TO 4P FOR A WEEKLY STAFF MEETING. Employment experience or a strong interest in health and wellness or early childhood education is preferred. Must be familiar with basic computer operations including MS WORD, EXCEL and the Internet. In addition, candidates should have some or all of the following skills:

  • Quick study

Compensation:
This position may come with a nominal stipend. The availability and amount of the stipend depends on the availability of funding.

Refugee Services of Texas Internships Available – Deadline 8/30

Refugee Services of Texas, Inc. is a not-for-profit social service agency guided by principles of human compassion and dignity committed to providing quality services for refugees, asylees, and victims of trafficking. The five RST offices throughout the state provide resettlement services and programs designed for the local communities we serve. Working in partnership with faith-based communities, businesses and volunteers, we provide our clients with resources, referrals, education and guidance to ensure their successful and self-sufficient lives in Texas.

Marketing/PR Intern
Outreach and communications are both important aspects of establishing presence within a community. RST has been working on rebranding and redirecting our marketing efforts over the past year, and you can help us continue those efforts. This position will include: establishing our social media presence, outreach, branding, marketing materials, and writing stories/taking photos for our new website.

Communications/Event Planning Intern
The Communications Intern will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the field of nonprofit communications and outreach.  The position will develop outreach materials to disseminate via email and social media as well as write compelling stories and/or articles for the agency’s website. The position will fill a critical and supportive role in assisting the office as it prepares for a fundraiser through identifying volunteers, soliciting sponsors and vendors, tracking donations, and other fundraiser duties as needed.  The Communications Intern will be under the direct supervision of the Area Director and will work closely with the program managers and volunteer coordinator on a full- or part-time basis.

Volunteer and Interpreter Coordination
Volunteers play an integral role in supporting the mission of RST through their many efforts. This position would be supporting the volunteer coordinator through: development of volunteer materials, planning volunteer appreciation, and volunteer outreach. RST also relies on interpreter support for all of our programs. This position would be helping to coordinate this system and making it more efficient and manageable for the office as a whole. You will not only be scheduling and managing interpreters but reaching out to communities within Austin who speak needed languages and building our interpreter base. This is an excellent opportunity for someone to learn more about the administrative aspects of non-profits.

Nonprofit Operations Intern
Refugee Services of Texas, Inc. is seeking a reliable, hard-working intern to join its dynamic team either full or part-time in its Austin office. Through the internship, the intern will gain broad experience in the non-profit sector and local operations of the organization. As a refugee resettlement agency, cross-communication skills will grow immensely as the intern interacts with individuals and families from various countries and with diverse language abilities. The intern will expand his/her skills in projects and activities that are vital to any non-profit, such as donation management, outreach initiatives, data entry, filing, and compliance management. The intern must have proficient computer skills including Microsoft Excel, and fluency in Spanish is preferred.

Employment Intern
Our employment program helps refugees build their resumes, apply for jobs, and trains them in American job etiquette. The intern will help with in-takes to the program, filling out applications for clients, and take on one or two case managements for themselves. The Employment Supervisor is seeking a part-time intern for the fall.

Undergraduate Research Fellowships Available – Fall Deadline is 9/17

The Undergraduate Research Fellowship (URF) program provides support for specific scholarly research projects conducted by full-time UT undergraduate students enrolled in any department. These fellowships are intended to cover costs associated with academic research projects proposed and written by student applicants and undertaken with the supervision of a university tenured or tenure-track faculty member, lecturer, senior lecturer or full-time research scientist/engineer.

Undergraduate Research Fellowships are awarded in amounts up to $1,000 in fall and spring. University tenured, tenure-track, non-tenure track faculty members or full-time research staff members may supervise undergraduate students in independent research projects. BDP students: If you are planning to do a research connecting experience this fall and will have expenses related to your research, please consider applying for a URF to help finance your research.

Application process: Apply by September 17th for a Fall 2013 Fellowship (spring deadline is January 22nd, 2014).
