Fall 2014 Internship Opportunity: Protecting Human Rights in Development Finance
The Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) is seeking exceptionally motivated, organized undergraduate students, graduate students, and graduates for the opportunity to gain experience in human rights and development. Fall 2014 internship opportunities may be part-time or full-time and are based in CIEL’s Washington, DC office for a minimum 10 weeks. The start date is flexible, though CIEL prefers an August or September start date. Due to limited resources, internships/externships are unpaid. CIEL is happy to work with accepted interns to seek course credit for their work.
The Early Warning System
The Early Warning System (EWS) is the first web-based tool to centralize information on development projects funded by multilateral development banks, such as the World Bank, that have the highest likelihood to negatively impact human rights worldwide. The purpose of EWS is to ensure that communities have access to information as early as possible in the project cycle so that they are empowered to change the course of development. The information include the possible human rights impacts that might be caused by a project, and it should be provided in a writing style that is clear, concise and easy to understand or translate into local languages. Armed with information about the project and the standards that apply, communities can influence the design of a project.
The Early Warning System has been jointly developed and managed by International Accountability Project
and CIEL. More information on the “Early Warning System” can be found at: http://bankonhumanrights.org/resources/early-warning-system-map/.
Intern Responsibilities and Qualifications
The EWS intern will work closely with the People, Land & Resources Program to draft and publish project analyses about projects that pose the highest likelihood of adverse human rights impacts. Duties include: utilizing the website to track pipeline development projects; review of project documents for potential human rights impacts; drafting project analyses for publication on the website; attending meetings; data entry; assisting with production of materials; if necessary, coordination of translation of materials into appropriate languages; and administrative duties, as required.
Successful applicants generally possess excellent research and writing skills and a strong interest in human rights and/or development. Additional language skills, such as Spanish, Hindi, Tagalog, and Burmese, are highly desirable but not required. CIEL actively seeks applicants with diverse backgrounds.
