Forklift Danceworks is a nonprofit dance company based in Austin, Texas. Founded in 2001 by Artistic Director Allison Orr, Forklift actively engages wide and diverse communities in the creation of unique dance projects featuring all kinds of people. Orr’s creative process is inspired by movement that stems from everyday life and the people that serve and support our community. Orr and her team’s performances have incorporated a wide range of people, from trash collectors in Austin’s Sanitation Department, to the linemen of Austin Energy, to the college ball players of the Huston-Tillotson baseball team. With a process centered around relationship building and community engagement, Forklift Danceworks strives to bring modern dance to the masses and empower all people to explore their own creativity.
Forklift’s ongoing community-based educational programs serve people who may not have access to dance in any other way. Body Shift, in collaboration with VSA Texas is currently the nation’s only ongoing program in mixed-ability dance. Leaps & Bounds provides free creative movement classes to children from low-income backgrounds plus professional development in the classroom.
