Free Minds, a program offering community education for financially disadvantaged families, has an internship opportunity for Spring 2015. Free Minds is program of Foundation Communities, an affordable housing nonprofit, in partnership with UT and ACC. We offer a free college humanities class to low-income adults who have faced barriers to higher education as well as an education program for students’ children. We believe in creating pathways to college for those who may have been shut out of the education system and exposing more people to a rich experience of the humanities. Our students explore literature, philosophy, anthropology, poetry, and writing in a supportive seminar environment and earn six credit hours for completing the class. We were founded in 2006 and are modeled on the national Clemente Course in the Humanities.

The Free Minds intern will:
· Help at our twice-weekly evening seminars, interacting with adult students and their children, as well as UT and ACC faculty
· Assist with outreach for our 2015-16 class, using established and new recruitment channels. This may include bringing materials to local nonprofits, making informal presentations to prospective students, and maintaining and updating recruitment spreadsheets and our website.
· Work on event planning for our College Fair and graduation ceremony.
The ideal intern will have experience with or an interest in community education and working with diverse populations. Coursework or a major in the humanities (English, philosophy, history, anthropology, art history, or similar disciplines) is a plus, as is experience with WordPress or Excel. You will need to be able to come to our offices in South Central Austin as well as our classroom in East Austin on MLK.
