Spring 2015 Internship with Texas Appleseed

Texas Appleseed’s mission is to promote social and economic justice for all Texans by leveraging the skills and resources of volunteer lawyers and other professionals to identify practical solutions to difficult systemic problems.

“Texas Appleseed has made a disproportionately broad and positive difference in the lives of many people, most often those who badly need help, but who have no voice in the political and legal issues that affect them.  Our pro bono legal partners, our talented and deeply dedicated staff, and a Board passionate about rolling up their sleeves and being involved in our justice work contribute to significant justice gains for the most vulnerable — our children, persons with mental disabilities, the indigent, recent immigrants, and those who have lost so much to the hurricanes that have battered Texas’ coast.

Whether you are new to Texas Appleseed or an ongoing financial supporter or member of our Visionary Society, I urge you to become involved and stay involved and help us make greater justice for all a reality.”

Spring 2015 Internship with Grassroots Leadership

Internship opportunity: Blogging, social media, and prison policy

Grassroots Leadership is nationally recognized for our work to confront a private prison industry that profits from pain. This work intersects with both the immigrant rights movement and the movement to end mass incarceration because of private prisons’ financial interests in locking up and ever increasing number of immigrants and black and brown communities. To that end, we coordinate state, local, and national campaigns that involve organizing, advocacy, and research to end the grip of private prisons on communities.

This internship would involve blogging, social media management and original reporting on private prisons in Texas. It would be an excellent opportunity for a student interested in writing, journalism, or public policy. Responsibilities will include writing news blog posts 1-2 a week, growing and engaging our social media following by creating infographics and managing existing social media accounts, and monitoring news media reports on Texas private prisons. A very successful blogging internship with us would also result in a style guide for the blog and social media accounts as well as some original reporting, with opportunities for this while the Texas Legislature in session, as well as other events as they happen in local and federal government. There would also be an expectation that this intern visit a local detention center run by a private prison company in Taylor, Texas.

Qualified applicants would be strong writers and copy editors, with research skills and basic knowledge of social media, and how to use software like Photoshop or free online tools to create infographics. Reliable transportation is also recommended to fulfill the visit to a nearby private prison.
