Crisis Text Line Seeking Summer Interns (Stipend Available)

Crisis Text Line, a nonprofit based in New York City, is seeking interns for the summer.

About Crisis Text Line:

Millions of young people are quietly suffering every day. They struggle with bullying, homophobia, suicidal thoughts, and more. The solution is beautifully simple. We provide effective and secure crisis counseling to teens via a medium they already use and trust: text.

Crisis Text Line (CTL) is private, familiar, and accessible. Through CTL, young people have free access to support at their fingertips, 24/7.

Marketing Intern:

Overview: The Marketing intern will help Crisis Text Line forge partnerships and reach more young people with the goal of introducing them to the nation’s first free, 24/7 crisis text line.

Reports to: CEO

What we’re looking for:

  • Super organized. The hangers in your closet all hang the same direction and your pencils are sharp.
  • Excellent communication skills. You cringe when you hear a plural verb with a singular noun. You appreciate a short sentence. You speak in soundbites. Cookie is your spirit animal.
  • Youth culture. (You understood that Cookie reference.)
  • Self-starter. You work well by yourself AND you play nicely with others.
  • Creative. When you hear “no” you think of a way to get to “yes.”
  • You love tight deadlines. You are fast. You love adversity.
  • Able to travel to our New York City office.
  • Committed to working full time from June 1-August 7

Data Intern:

Overview: The data intern’s role at Crisis Text Line is to the smartest person in the room, and not because they always know the answers, but rather because they know how to find and communicate the answers. At its core, Crisis Text Line is a data informed organization. Every strategy conversion begins with what does the data say? The data team’s job is to analyze large and fast moving data sets, detect changes in our member’s behavior, and test new products and ideas. A successful candidate will possess strong analytical skills and a steadfast sense of curiosity.

Reports to: Chief Data Scientist

What you’ll do:

  • Testing and Analysis
    • Work with large, complex data sets
    • Solve non-routine problems
    • Visualize and present findings to non-technical staff
  • Strategy and Implementation
    • Utilize data to build products with cross-functional teams from the ground up
    • Contribute to development of a long-term data strategy for Crisis Text Line
    • Work with tech team to organize data systems and automate analytical reports​

What you’ll learn:

  • How to work with data at velocity
  • How to present analysis in a business setting
  • How to synthesize quantitative and qualitative data

What we’re looking for:

  • Strong sense of curiosity
  • Ability to explain analytical outcomes in lay terms
  • Ability to learn new skills and understand complex problems fast
  • Advanced computer skills (MS Excel, Powerpoint, et cetera)
  • Experience with experiment design a plus
  • Some experience with web analytics, SQL, Python, R (or similar)
  • Desire (or prior experience) to learn about digital media
  • You are currently learning a new skill that has nothing to do with data analytics
  • Able to travel to our New York City office.
  • Committed to working full time from June 1-August 7

Other ​Qualifications:

Data is everywhere. If you’ve worked with it at scale, apply. Past successful candidates have come with backgrounds in CS, statistics, mathematics, and economics.
