VELOCITY AT SKILLPOINT ALLIANCE
The Skillpoint Alliance Velocity Programs provide high school students with over 120 hours of relevant, hands-on work experience and exposure to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers. Teams of 20 rising juniors and seniors form a consulting company and work for an industry client on a real world problem. Velocity operates two program cycles:
Velocity Capstone: Spring semester Velocity Prep: Summer session
Working with the client and other experts, students’ research, plan, develop, and present deliverables to address the client’s real-world problem in a hands-on setting. Under the supervision of the Velocity Program Lead, the STEM Project Facilitator supports the planning and execution of the Velocity Program. The Facilitator works with program participants and Skillpoint Alliance staff on developing and overseeing the logistics of several projects throughout the duration of the program.
Position Description
Do you have a passion for working with students? Want more experience working in project-based environments? This internship is looking for enthusiastic individuals that want to engage students in STEM and serve the community for both our Spring and Summer Velocity cohorts.
The Project Facilitator collaborates with Skillpoint Alliance staff to ensure Velocity Prep program delivery. The facilitator must support student work to assure project completion through supervising students at their work sites, facilitating meeting times, and assisting students with project organization workflow to develop an effective solution. Additionally, the facilitator must manage logistics with both the host school and external partners. Facilitators will gain experience in project management, project based learning, curriculum development and community outreach in addition to being provided with networking opportunities and extensive professional development.
Responsibilities:
● Attend Velocity Facilitator Orientation;
● Define student workflow, deliverables, and other processes for measuring project progress;
● Manage student expectations, maintaining student schedule, instituting accountability measures and
addressing student motivation and performance issues as necessary;
● Serve as student role model by modeling productive work habits, positive attitude and effective
- professional relationships;
- Coordinate student engagement with industry/subject matter experts (e.g. site tours, guest lectures);
- Manage documentation for all Velocity program operations;
- Prepare a summary report describing project goals, accomplishments, student outcomes, expenditures,and suggestions for improvement ;
- Oversee the development of written and presentation deliverables including, but not limited to:business plans, and PowerPoint presentations;
- Engage students in discussion and research relevant to the project at hand; and
- Additional Responsibilities as assigned by Acceleration Program Lead.Requirements
- Currently pursuing or completed a Bachelor of Arts, Science, or Masters in a relevant subject area
- Project management skills (effective and efficient communication is critical)
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills (eg. Student organization leadership)
- Some experience working with youth in an education or informal setting
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint
- Proficient in applications including: Podio, Google Apps, Dropbox, etc.
- Familiarity with the development of a business plan, consulting services
- Reliable transportation necessary
