Fall Internships with the YMCA of Austin

The Y is dedicated to building programs for youth development, for healthy living and for social responsibility that promote strong families, character values, youth leadership, community development and international understanding. Internships Opportunities NOW AVAILABLE!

Our office is conveniently located in our central office just north of the University of Texas at Austin! There is easy access to the Metro and UT Austin Shuttle Buses. If you are a student and looking for an opportunity that can help give you an edge in your future career we offer an array of opportunities for you to participate in. Below you will find four of our internship opportunities that are now available:

Fall Internship with the Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation

Are you passionate about children? Do you want to make a difference in the lives of young children living with a chronic medical condition? If you answered yes, then we have an exciting opportunity for you.

The RLS Foundation based in Austin, Texas is the leading nonprofit patient advocacy organization providing support and hope for individuals and their families affected by this serious neurological disease. Supported by individual donations, we fund the only research program dedicated to finding a RLS cure, certify Quality Care Centers located at major medical institutions in the United States and Europe where individuals can seek care from world renowned RLS experts and provide educational materials to patients and physicians resulting in an improved quality of life.

We are looking for a candidate with a passion for serving the nonprofit community who is willing to take on a project that focuses on young children living with RLS.

Our ideal candidate for this position is a college student who is a highly motivated, creative and thoughtful individual with the ability to transform medical information into an understandable interactive format for young children.

As an intern with the RLS Foundation, you will work on significant projects that have a positive impact on the lives of individuals living with RLS. We want our interns to participate in and learn about development, event planning, communications and non-profit management skills.

Experiences You Will Gain

  • Develop content and layout for a new RLS in Children Booklet for school aged kids as part of our Hearing Children’s Voices Program
  • Work with staff to develop a monthly script that our cartoonist can create into informational vignettes for use in our printed materials, newsletters, social media and the Hearing Children’s Voices
  • Assist the Executive Director and Communications Coordinator in the development of compelling Information for inclusion in our library of materials
  • Content development and copy editing for our monthly eFriends newsletter and acclaimed quarterly newsletter, NightWalkers
  • Additional opportunities to assist with our other awareness and educational activities, social media and website

What We Require

  • Strong communication skills
  • A team player
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Organized with the ability to prioritize time-sensitive items
  • Blackbaud Software experience preferred, but we will train
  • Interest in nonprofit communication and management
  • College student with a background in communication, early childhood/elementary education, hospital specialist, nursing or other related discipline

Fall Internships with Marathon Kids

 

Marathon Kids Communications and PR Intern

Direct Reports to: Mary Mattia, Communications and PR Manager S

Start Date: Immediate
Hours: part-time (16-20 hours per week)

OVERVIEW:

Marathon Kids is dedicated to improving the health of children by providing them with the tools, motivation and support to live happier, healthier lifestyles. So far, Marathon Kids has transformed the lives of over two million children and as of this year, we have partnered with Nike to take our youth running program to the next level. Kids everywhere need more access to physical activity. We are building a sustainable funding model to fuel our growth and help every kid go the distance.

Marathon Kids is seeking a driven, fast-learning and inventive intern who is passionate about changing the lives of children and is ready to apply communications/PR knowledge to that cause. This internship will provide hands-on experience with an innovative nonprofit – you will be mentored by professionals actively changing the NPO world, blow-out your work portfolio through real-world experience, and help deliver on the promise of the Marathon Kids mission.

QUALIFICATIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Write. Press releases, pitches, media materials, social posts, coverage reports, trackers, recaps – strong written skills will be a key contributor to your success.
  • Research. Get down and dirty with the ins-and-outs of our world. Take initiative to learn what you don’t know to help inform stellar work product and decision-making.
  • Hustle. Get scrappy pitching media and garnering coverage; develop media and community relationships and put them to use.
  • Plan. Assist in event planning, coordination and management. Be detail-oriented and resourceful.
  • Analyze. Hone your critical thinking skills and look deeply at the landscape and materials in front of you. Synthesize insights from your learning and develop reports that shed light on the unknown.
  • Strategize. Be ready to come to the table with thoughts, poignant questions and recommendations.
  • Adapt. We move fast, experiment and pivot as soon as we identify a need to change course. Adaptability and flexibility are critical to this role.
  • Engage. Be part of a small, highly productive and dynamic team. Leave a real legacy with your ideas and projects.

Marathon Kids Development Intern

Direct Reports to: Development Officer and/or Grants Manager

This internship will provide hands-on experience with a cutting-edge development team at an innovative nonprofit. You will be mentored by professionals actively changing the NPO world, gain real-world experience, and fulfill and help deliver on the promise of the Marathon Kids mission.

QUALIFICATIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Research. Get down and dirty with the ins-and-outs of the nonprofit development world. Take initiative to learn what you don’t know to help inform stellar work product and decision-making.
  • Track. Get up close and personal with the funding cycles of institutions and individual donors. Enter and maintain clean constituent data in Salesforce, our CRM. Assist in gift acknowledgement and donor cultivation.
  • Write. Briefs on potential leads, meeting notes, grant reports, proposals, recaps – strong written skills will be a key contributor to your success.
  • Analyze. Hone your critical thinking skills and look deeply at the landscape and materials in front of you. Synthesize insights from your learning and directly apply them on the go.
  • Create. Assist in event planning and collateral production. Bring ideas to life.
  • Adapt. We move fast, experiment often, and pivot as soon as we identify a need to

    change course. Adaptability and flexibility are critical to this role.

  • Engage. Be ready to come to the table with thoughtful questions and big ideas. Be part

    of a small, highly productive and dynamic team. Make a lasting impact.
