Research Assistant Needed for Waller Creek Biodiversity Project

Waller Creek Biodiversity & Sustainability: working group and archive

Description: Project PI’s include Dr. Dean Hendrickson, Dr. Mary Poteet and Adam Cohen. The project aims to bring together research products (reports, images, data, etc.) received from anyone, related to Waller Creek. Digital files will be deposited into UT’s Digital Repository, creating a permanent archive of everything known about Waller Creek. A second aspect of the project involves coordinating with the public and researchers and participating in biodiversity sampling in Waller Creek. We will be collecting specimens for UT’s Biodiversity Collections and photographing biodiversity to archive on iNaturalist.

Qualifications: Need outgoing students interested in library/information science and biodiversity. Preferred students will have had some research experience, know how to use Microsoft Office products (especially Excel). Must be detail oriented.

Project Timeline: Project duration is 1 year starting Sept 1, 2015. Ideally an applicant can be available for the full extent of the project.

Duties: Duties may include contacting researchers and gathering meta data relating to research products, digitization of paper documents, reconciling files and data with meta data, data entry, submitting data to UT’s Digital Repository, involvement with biodiversity sampling, organizing sampling events, and specimen preparation.

Work location is somewhat flexible since much of the work can be done from a computer with an internet connection. But we will require some time with primary investigators on main campus and at Pickle Research Center in north Austin in the Ichthyology Collection.

Effects of Body Worn Cameras on Officer Behaviors

Get in the front lines of research: join Dr. Patil to analyze and code police officer behavior patterns in actual body camera footage.

Description

Examination of how officer values, work attitudes, and personality traits affect their decision making and behaviors. Actual body camera footage from two large enforcement agencies will be coded to examine behavioral patterns among officers.

Ongoing Internships with the Boys & Girls Club of Austin

The purpose of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area (BGCAA) is to create opportunities for youth in their very own place. Throughout its history BGCAA has focused on meeting the needs of children as they grow to young adults. Specifically, BGCAA helps children to help themselves, to realize their potential for development and improvement, and to become responsible citizens with the skills necessary for living.

 Our mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens.

 In order to achieve its mission, BGCAA will strive to recruit and develop staff dedicated to building relationships; design a comprehensive program for education, recreation, personal, social and career development, citizenship and leadership, and more.

 TITLE: Youth Development Professional

Plans, implements, supervise activities provided within a specific program area, such as Education, Special Education, Social Recreation, Arts & Crafts, and Physical Education.

Part time hours (12-20 hours a week) during the school year: 2:30pm to 8:00pm; Mon-Fri. Out of school times (i.e. summer, winter break, spring break) will vary.

All employees working at a Club Location based in a school are expected to follow the calendar year of Austin Independent School District. Therefore, when the school is not in operation you will not have work unless specified by your supervisor.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):

  •   Create an environment that facilitates the achievement of Youth Development Outcomes.
  •   Promote and stimulate program participation.
  •   Provide guidance and role modeling to members.
  •   Effectively implement and administer programs, services and activities for membersand visitors.
  •   Monitor and evaluate programs, services and activities to ensure safety of themembers, quality in programs and appearance of the club at all times.
  •   Prepare periodic activity reports.
  •   Ensure a productive work environment by participating in meetings as assigned.
  •   Prepare, create, research and write unit and lesson plans as directed by supervisor andas schedule allows.

    ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

     May be required to drive a shuttle bus or Club transportation.
     Be able to perform other duties as assigned or requested by supervisor(s).

     Will be responsible for light housekeeping and cleaning.

      May be required, under the supervision of the Club Director, to complete all CitySquare and /or reporting and program requirements including and but not limited to: attending meetings, trainings and daily / monthly reporting.

      Assisting with processing of financial documents required by grants/reporting authorities.

    RELATIONSHIPS:

    Internal: Maintain close daily contact with club staff (professional and volunteer), club members, and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain guidelines/instructions; instruct; and advise/counsel

    External: Maintains contact with external community groups, schools, members’ parents and others to assist in resolving problems.

    SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

     High School Diploma or GED
     Previous experience working with children between the ages of 5 to 18 years of age.

     Valid State Driver’s License if 21 years or older.
     Spanish speaking preferred
     Ability to stand for long periods of time.
     Ability to work in various weather conditions—hot, cold, rainy, etc.
     Ability to meet physical demands of working with children.
     Ability to move equipment up to 25 pounds.
