Rapoport-King Research Scholarships for Plan I Liberal Arts Honors Students

Audre and Bernard Rapoport of Waco, Texas, have provided an endowment that enables the College of Liberal Arts to provide scholarship and research support for those who are writing a thesis in one of the Plan I Departmental Honors Programs.  These scholarships honor Audre and Bernard Rapoport and Robert D. King, former Dean of the College of Liberal Arts.  Fifteen Rapoport-King Scholarships will be awarded for 2015-2016.

To be eligible for a Rapoport-King Scholarship, students, who are expected to graduate May 2016, must be planning to write a senior thesis in one of the College’s departmental honors programs (Plan II students are not eligible).  Fellows will be chosen on the basis of academic record, the quality of the thesis proposal, and financial need.  As Mr. Rapoport has put it:  the candidates should be “smart and deserving.”  Rapoport Fellows are expected to meet on a regular basis with other Rapoport Fellows and their faculty mentors.  Those chosen will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship for the senior year only.  In addition, faculty mentors will be provided with $1,000 for research support, and it is expected that student and mentor will work closely together.

Austin EcoNetwork Seeks Interns

Austin EcoNetwork, an environmental news site based in Austin, is dedicated to educating the public about the local environment. They are currently seeking interns for two positions. Read on for more information.

Artist Collaboration/Internship

Join the Austin EcoNetwork team as our in-house artist! The Austin EcoNetwork is an

environmental news site based in Austin, dedicated to educating the public about the local

environment. We are always thinking up new, fun, and creative ways to do that, which is where

you come in. We are looking for an artist to work with us on a fun new project aimed at

illustrating the news.

This will not be a busywork kind of internship. AEN’s in-house artist will have the opportunity to

jump right into the action, working with the editor to illustrate the local news. We’re essentially

bringing back the art of the political cartoon.

Responsibilities will include:

• Working with the AEN intern to tell news stories in fun and creative ways

• Creating illustrations and drawing political cartoons for the Austin EcoNetwork website

Who should apply:

• Creative people who love the environment and want to work on something new and innovative

• Applicants do not necessarily have to be art majors, they just have to be talented artists with a

passion for the local news

PR Internship

Join the Austin EcoNetwork team as a PR/Promotional Intern! The Austin EcoNetwork is an

environmental news site based in Austin, Texas and we need your help expanding our reach!

This will not be a busywork kind of internship. AEN’s PR/Promotional Intern will have the

opportunity to jump right into the action, putting together a plan for expanding AEN’s readership

and then executing that plan. This will very much be your project, and will be a great resume

booster. The hours are flexible and enthusiasm is a must.

Responsibilities will include:

• Putting together a PR/promotional plan to expand the Austin EcoNetwork’s readership,

especially amongst younger readers

• Acting upon that plan, and actually putting in the work necessary to expand AEN’s readership

• Going to environmental events in the city and helping to get the word out about the

EcoNetwork in-person

Who should apply:

• PR/communications majors who are interested in the environment

• Creative individuals who are self-starters and are ready to put their passion behind an exciting

project

Internship with Water to Thrive

 

Water to Thrive is a faith-based nonprofit dedicated to the mission of bringing clean, safe water to communities in rural Africa. Since its founding in 2008, more than 650 wells have been built, providing the gift of clean water to more than 350,000 people in East Africa.

Water To Thrive (W2T) is looking for energetic, highly motivated interns to work in our in Austin, Texas office.

Previous interns have researched grant development, provided social media support, developed marketing materials, worked on promotional strategies, and participated in increasing community engagement. We are seeking interns who will combine a commitment to creating positive change with their own skill set and ideas for projects and participation.

Areas where interns can contribute include technology and engineering (website development and review, water project engineering design specifications, data entry and analysis), program management (assisting with current project management and communication, assisting with development of new water projects), and fundraising development (philanthropy and fundraising, grant proposals). In other words, interested candidates should be prepared to discuss what they would like to achieve during their time with the organization.

ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Past interns have come to Water to Thrive from various majors, including communication, education, engineering, marketing, and public relations. Candidates should be prepared to discuss their educational background and skill set in terms of how they can benefit the mission of Water to Thrive, and to present a concept and goal for a task or tasks they would like to accomplish during the internship.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

(for previous internships – will be redeveloped to suit the skills and goals of any particular person)

  • Update social media channels
  • Find new grants – apply and manage these grants
  • Assist with compiling outreach contact lists & reach out to potential supporters
  • Help organize donor information and profiles
  • Research creative and innovative ideas to promote W2T and our initiatives
  • Participate in event planning and development
  • Work across departments to assist as needed

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be a self-starter who is able to take responsibility for projects and work independently
  • Have excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Be detail-oriented, a problem solver, an efficient multi-tasker and extremely organized
  • Be devoted to and believe in the vision and mission of W2T
  • Have a strong knowledge of computer and word processing applications
  • Have a working knowledge of using social media tools for business
  • Have a working knowledge of emerging technology platforms
  • Have an assertive, can-do attitude and be able to work independently as well as be a team player
  • Flexibility in schedule
  • Access to a laptop computer and a smartphone device
