Paid Internship with UT Bike Project

The Orange Bike Project is UT’s community bicycle workshop and rental station. We provide hands on bicycle maintenance as well as semester and short term rentals for all students and staff of UT. We are located in 27th Street Garage (TSG) behind the SSB. We are currently looking for a student leaders to join our team as part-time paid intern, working as a shop coordinator. Title: Diabetes Program Intern

Timeline: Fall, Spring, and Summer Semesters

Hours: Negotiable; Interns are expected to office at 15 Waller Street, Austin, TX at least

3 days per week & work at least 15 hours per week for the duration of the internship.

*Bilingual in English and Spanish strongly preferred

Description: The student will work with the Diabetes Program Coordinator, Public Health Educator II, and the entire Chronic Disease Prevention and Control Program staff to understand the programmatic initiatives to reduce the burden of chronic disease in Austin/Travis County. This internship will have a specific focus on the prevention and control of type 2 diabetes among medically underserved health disparate populations in Austin/Travis County.  The internship will have three focuses: community outreach pertaining to the Community Diabetes Initiative program, coordination of delivery of direct services with a concentration on the Walk Texas! Active Austin 10 Week Challenge, and participation in the Central Texas Diabetes Coalition and affiliated workgroups. 

Expectations:

  1. Gain an understanding of the Chronic Disease Prevention and Control Program
  2. Become familiar with evidence-based programs such as the Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP).
  3. Develop engagement strategies, an outreach plan, and implement the plan in target organizations to promote Diabetes Self-Management Education classes in the disparate groups with a high prevalence of diabetes including the African American, Hispanic, and Asian-American communities.
  4. Coordinating new diabetes management referral systems by establishing new partnerships with clinics and community organizations.
  5. Conduct an evaluation for current referral system. This may include data entry of forms, qualitative or quantitative analysis, and report generation.
  6. Support the Central Texas Diabetes Coalition through participation in general Coalition meetings and workgroups. Assist in coalition team building. Write meeting minutes and communicate with workgroup Coalition members as needed.

  3. Minutes from Central Texas Diabetes Coalition meetings.

Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship Opportunities Available

The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer. For 20 years, this program has increased awareness of DOE research opportunities to students pursuing STEM degrees (short for science, technology, engineering and math). The goal of the program is to improve opportunities for women and minority students in these fields, however all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply.

 Applicants must be currently enrolled full-time as a degree-seeking student in a STEM program at an accredited college or university at the Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral level. Must be at least a college sophomore at the time of application; have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; be a U.S. citizen; and be at least 18 years of age.   The deadline to apply is December 21, 2015.
