The Johnson Center for Child Health and Development: Healthy Smart Kids Austin Lunch Buddy

Do you love kids and good food?

The mission of The Johnson Center for Child Health and Development is to advance the understanding of childhood development through clinical care, research, and education. We are a multidisciplinary center that integrates research, medical, nutrition, and behavioral care, and social support services for families and children with developmental disorders across the world.

In 2015 a team at TJC developed a program called Healthy Smart Kids encompassing a nutrition and cooking education curriculum for a school in New York, and in 2016 this program is being adapted for St. Andrew’s School (1112 W 31st St, Austin, TX 78705). We are looking for a Lunch Buddy to help support children aged K-6 in making smart choices in the lunch line.

The duties of the Lunch Buddy include, but are not limited to:

  • Engage with children in the cafeteria during lunch to encourage healthy choices Monday-Friday from 11am to 1pm
  • Answer basic nutrition questions from children
  • May help develop curriculum and games for the classroom lessons
  • Help create a study design for measuring effectiveness of program
  • Collect data for research
  • Take on other program-related tasks as required
  • Opportunities to shadow clinical appointments available

 Our ideal candidate should have:

  • Basic nutrition knowledge (not required, but preferred)
  • Prior experience working with children
  • Ability to be creative and think on his/her feet
  • An interest in teaching/ education
  • Outgoing, friendly personality
  • Energy and willingness to work in a dynamic school setting
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to take direction and collaborate
  • Access to a car for transportation (preferred)

The anticipated start date of the Lunch Buddy Program is February 1, but meetings and preparation in advance of this date will be required and will be scheduled in office according to your schedule.
