Side By Side Kids Fall Internships, Part-Time Jobs, and Volunteer Opportunities

Founded in 1996, Side by Side Kids (SBSK) is a neighborhood recreational afterschool program in East Austin’s St. Johns community. SBSK provides Austin’s only free faith-based afterschool program (grades k-5) through a collaboration of 30 partners and 30 volunteers, serving approximately 190 students every week. SBSK serves 4 schools, an area where 97% of families are economically disadvantaged. SBSK’s afterschool program has a 96% success rate. Learn more here.

Job Title: Afterschool Program Intern

Purpose of the Position:

  • The Afterschool Program Intern is responsible for supporting and further developing the Side by Side Kids afterschool program through managing special projects, researching and/or developing new program activities, preparing for the upcoming days and/or weeks of programming, and processing student and program data, among other tasks.

Skills & Competencies Needed:

  • Interest in youth and afterschool programming and understanding of its positive impact to the community it serves.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills. A writing sample is requested.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relational skills.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office products to include Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Data entry experience is a plus.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred, but not required.
  • Excellent organizational skills and an eye for detail.
  • Complete an application, which includes a background check, two references, and training. Provide a writing sample.

Specific Tasks or Duties:

Daily:

  • Arrive on time and prepared to begin working on the intern task list.
  • Review task list to determine whether any additional instruction or assistance is needed and solicit that instruction or assistance from the appropriate staff member.
  • Update appropriate staff on tasks in progress or completed.
  • Complete online paperwork including, but not limited to, timesheets, weekly reports, and project to do lists.

Weekly:

  • Attend weekly meetings with SBSK staff and Crew Leaders.
  • Coordinate with other interns, Crew Leaders, volunteers, and staff as needed.
  • Provide additional support on-campus by helping with homework, leading recreation activities, leading curriculum, etc.

Ongoing and Special Projects:

  • Post-Homework Activities: Research, develop, and create games, worksheets, and other educational activities for students’ use upon completion of their homework. Brainstorm and develop ideas for new program curriculum (as needed)
  • Parent Newsletter/Calendar: Write material for and create monthly, parent newsletter/calendar. Provide information about the word of the week and how our parents can discuss and reinforce these concepts at home. Gather material from students, volunteers, and parents while on-campus for newsletter.
  • Special Weeks: Provide additional support for students during special program weeks, such as Arts Week, Service Week, Technology Week and Showcase Week. Assist with curriculum development (as needed).
  • Special Programming: Plan and implement a special program (under the direction of the Volunteer and Intern Coordinator) that allows students the opportunity to learn something new. This is flexible based on the needs of the semester.
  • Supply Prep: Prepare and organize supplies for the following week of curriculum.
  • Administrative: Support the Site Coordinator(s) with any of the following administrative tasks: data entry, supply closet maintenance, file organization, shredding, event planning, etc.

As Needed:

  • Report any suspected abuse or neglect to a Side by Side Coordinator and to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services hotline at 1-800-252-5400.

Coordinates With or Reports To:

  • Volunteer and Intern Coordinator – for issues regarding training, resource needs and procedures, volunteer/mentor management, questions and areas of concern that relate to the internship or to any specific tasks assigned by the Volunteer and Resource Program Coordinator.
  • Site Coordinator(s) – for questions, resource needs, procedures, or areas of concern regarding any specific tasks assigned by the Site Coordinator(s).

Supervision:

The intern will be required to complete a daily timesheet, detailing the times and hours worked, as well as the project and responsibilities completed. This timesheet will be submitted via an online form to the Intern Coordinator each day and will be reviewed at the end of each week. Weekly meetings with the Intern Coordinator will provide direct support and guidance to the intern by detailing weekly tasks and goals for the intern to accomplish. Feedback will be provided at weekly meetings or as needed throughout the internship.

Resources Provided:

All software, hardware, and other materials required for the job, including access to computers, a camera, a projector, a copier/printer/fax machine, Internet, and telephone.

Time Required:

10-15 Hours per week, weekly intern meeting, additional staff meetings if and as needed

Term of Service:

One school semester (fall or spring)

Job Title: Communication and Media Intern

Purpose of the Position:

  • Effectively keep the families of the children involved in the afterschool informed of the events of the month
  • Effectively keep our sponsors and involved churches informed of what the Side By Side Kids ministries are doing
  • Raise awareness and attract new people to Side By Side Kids through online content
  • Grow our database of student, family and volunteer information
  • Provide support and assistance in the distribution of development materials

Specific Tasks or Duties:

  • Take and collect photographs of kids and volunteers at events
  • Attend pertinent SBSK staff meetings (once a month)
  • Compose articles and stories for publications
  • Assist Executive Director on Pledge Campaign
  • Layout and design monthly bulletins and newsletters
  • Maintain and update the Side By Side Kids blog weekly with entries, pictures, graphics, etc
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Community Outreach Director on the design and dispersion of development media
  • Maintain and update the Instagram account five times per week

Skills:

  • Ability to use layout and design computer programs
  • Good writing and interpersonal communication skills required
  • Written and Spoken knowledge of English and Spanish is preferred
  • Ability to construct, compile and condense articles into meaningful summaries
  • Ability to convey information effectively to a virtual community

Coordinates with or Reports to:

  • Volunteer and Intern Coordinator for weekly check ins, task list discussions, and paperwork
  • Community Relations Coordinator for content, design and imagery direction as well as blog posts, social media posts and press releases

Time Involvement Required:

  • 10-20 hours per week; some weekend and evening hours

Term of Service: 1 Semester

Come volunteer with Side by Side Kids!

Side by Side Kids is an afterschool program on a mission to inspire and equip kids in East Austin to be excellent students, make wise choices and follow Christ. Come volunteer with our afterschool program at one of four elementary schools in the St. Johns area. Our program runs from 3:00 pm – 5:30 pm, Monday – Thursday. Come serve at least once a week for a minimum of one hour for the semester during any of the following components of our program:

Homework Help: help kids as they complete homework, and engage them with learning games and activities.

Crew Time: join in during our faith-based curriculum time based around the scripture of the week.

Recreation Time: participate in structured games and play such as kickball, soccer and board games.

Requirements to volunteer:

  • Complete online Volunteer Intake Form and Agreement Form
  • Background check
  • Orientation or Training
  • Must be at least 16

Afterschool Crew Leader (Teacher)

Job Title: Afterschool Teacher (Crew Leader)

Education Level: High School Diploma/GED or higher

Work Site: J.J. Pickle/T.A. Brown Elementary Schools/Webb Primary School, Austin, TX

Hourly Rate: $10-12/hr, DOE

Summary: The Side by Side Kids afterschool program empowers elementary-aged students through recreation, tutoring and academics, and a daily faith-based character study. Side by Side Kids is currently looking for crew leaders (afterschool teachers) that are high-energy, intentional individuals. $10-12/hour, 7-16 hours a week.

Responsibilities: Crew Leaders manage an afterschool classroom of 10 elementary-aged students. Must be able to work at least two days a week – Monday/Wednesday, Tuesday/Thursday or Monday through Thursday during the hours of 2:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. Applicants must be available to work at least one school semester.

Requirements: Applicants should have graduated from high school or have acquired a GED. Applicants are not required to have an education background, but should come ready-to-learn about managing a classroom, teaching and mentoring elementary-aged kids, and being open to direction. Applicants should be passionate about working with children, intuitive about the needs of others, and ready for a challenge. Preference is given to applicants with experience working with kids and to those proficient in the Spanish language, though not mandatory.

Annie’s List Fall Internships

Annie’s List proudly invests in learning opportunities for young leaders through our internship program. We host several interns each school semester.

We are currently accepting applications for fall 2016 internships through July 25, 2016. 

Annie’s List interns have gone on to attend Campaign School, work on the campaigns of our endorsed candidates around the state, join the Annie’s List staff, and work in key positions in the Capitol.

Overall Requirements include:

  • Strong interest in promoting women to political power
  • Microsoft Office knowledge
  • Google Drive familiarity
  • Quick to learn
  • Flexible Schedule

Annie’s List interns work in one of four areas:

Political interns learn what it takes to recruit, train and support candidates for future office. They will:

  • Assist in recruiting attendees for candidate trainings
  • Reach out to local elected officials and progressive allies on behalf of Annie’s List
  • Learn software pertinent to progressive campaigns (NGP & VAN)
  • Conduct political research
  • Help with tasks for other departments as needed

Communication interns will learn how a political organization generates a following and communicates with it. They will:

  • Assist in tracking press relevant to Annie’s List candidates and issues
  • Compile mentions in the press regarding Annie’s List
  • Write summaries of experiences to be shared with Annie’s List followers via Twitter, Facebook, and email
  • Help with tasks for other departments as needed

Development interns will learn how to generate money for an organization the size of Annie’s List. They will:

  • Maintain database and spreadsheets
  • Create event materials
  • Conduct donor research
  • Communicate with Annie’s List donors
  • Prepare mailings and solicitations
  • Help with tasks for other departments as needed

Training interns will learn how to plan and deliver meaningful programming to support candidates and their staff. They will:

  • Help identify strategic training locations and local partners
  • Assist in recruiting attendees for candidate trainings
  • Draft communication to promote events
  • Plan event logistics and contribute to delivery
  • Help with tasks for other departments as needed

Creative Action Fall Internship

Through interactive classroom performances, after school arts residencies and community-based programs, Creative Action’s team of professional Teaching Artists inspire youth to be Creative Artists, Courageous allies, Critical Thinkers, and Confident Leaders.

We believe that when youth develop their creativity, compassion, confidence and critical thinking skills, and build meaningful connections with peers and positive role-models, they become successful adults who contribute to their communities and thrive in their careers and relationships.

Development Internship – Fall 2016

(10-12 hrs. /week average)

Creative Action’s Development Intern will work closely with the development department by assisting with a wide range of responsibilities and engaging with Creative Action Staff, Board, and donors. This internship will provide substantial hands-on experience in nonprofit development, while also gaining a greater understanding for Creative Action’s mission and organizational goals.

Essential duties include:

  • Researching grants and funding opportunities and compiling prospect information
  • Assisting with writing and submitting grants
  • Assisting with donor stewardship activities, like prep for mailings
  • Assisting with development data entry in Donor Perfect
  • Assisting with prep for donor visits, events, etc.
  • Sitting in on donor meetings, development meetings, etc.
  • Attending events/programs and meet with staff to help gather student and TA stories for grant writing and reporting

Internship hours will be 10-12 hrs/week, will be flexible, and some tasks may be worked on remotely. Internship will begin in late August or early September, 2016 and continue through mid-December, 2016.
