Seeking Spring 2017 Communications Intern, Volunteer and Program Intern, & Special Events Intern
The Shoal Creek Conservancy (www.shoalcreekconservancy.org) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 2013 with the mission to restore, protect, and enhance the ecological, social and cultural vibrancy of Shoal Creek for the people of Austin, Texas by engaging the public and partnering with the community. We accomplish this mission through activities that maintain and improve the Shoal Creek trail and greenway; enhance the public’s enjoyment of the Creek; and restore the watershed. Shoal Creek is the city’s oldest trail and extends for approximately four miles through the heart of Austin, Texas.
Communications Intern Job Description:
Shoal Creek Conservancy seeks an intern with strong writing skills, knowledge and understanding of communications strategies, the digital media landscape – including various social media websites – and graphic design. The intern will work closely with the Executive Director to develop and administer marketing and communications campaigns for the Conservancy. The position is available to undergraduate or graduate as well as recent graduates.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with the development and execution monthly social media campaigns
- Monitor and evaluate social media effectiveness
- Help maintain and update the Shoal Creek Conservancy website
- Research and develop ways to improve engagement and site traffic
- Assist with drafting the monthly e-newsletter to send to Shoal Creek supporters
- Promote fundraising events, volunteer opportunities, work days and programming and other events in coordination with the Volunteer Coordinator Intern and the Executive Director
- Assist with the development of marketing materials
- Work with the Executive Director to develop the Conservancy enterprise activities
- Improve the Conservancy’s list of local media contacts
- Draft media releases and organize media events as appropriate
Qualifications:
- Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills
- Experience with WordPress a plus
- Direct experience working with social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
- Graphic design experience and proficiency in InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Highly organized and able to manage multiple ongoing projects
- Enthusiasm for the Conservancy’s mission
Start Date: January 2017 ( requires a minimum semester/summer commitment)
Hours: Recommended at least 15 hours a week, preferably 2-3 times a week in the office
Stipend: $500 per semester/summer

Volunteer and Programs Intern Job Description:
Shoal Creek Conservancy seeks an extremely organized, enthusiastic leader that enjoys working with all types of people to help design and manage the Conservancy’s public programs and volunteer activities. The ideal candidate must be passionate about urban trail and watershed work. The position is available to undergraduate or graduate as well as recent graduates.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with the design and execution at least one monthly public event or activity along Shoal Creek, such as public meetings or guided tours in partnership with Executive Director
- Assist with coordination of volunteer work days along Shoal Creek approximately once per month
- Investigate opportunities to expand SCC programs by partnering with other organizations
- Monitor and evaluate program performance and participation
- Recruit and help manage volunteers for work days, including developing list of potential volunteer groups and individuals; attending events to recruit volunteers, scheduling volunteers for particular events; providing them with necessary documentation; conducting orientations
- Assist with promotion of programs and events and register participants
- Assist with planning major fundraising events
Qualifications:
- Ability to work with a diverse group of people; professional demeanor
- Comfortable coordinating and leading a large groups of people
- Previous experience planning events and programs and/or managing volunteers
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Enjoys working outdoors as well as in the office; experience with trail/restoration projects a plus
- Extreme attention to detail
- Self-motivated and able to manage multiple projects at one time
- Excellent computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office products
- Enthusiasm for the Conservancy’s mission

Special Events Intern Job Description:
Shoal Creek Conservancy seeks an extremely organized individual who is interested in learning more about event planning and nonprofit fundraising. This person would work closely with the Development Coordinator and assist with production of the 3rd Annual Shoal Creek Awards fundraising event. The Special Events Intern must be available to attend the Shoal Creek Awards event on Tuesday, May 23. The position is available to undergraduate or graduate as well as recent graduates.
Responsibilities:
The Intern will have a central role in producing the 2017 Shoal Creek Awards event, a happy-hour style community awards presentation and fundraiser.
- Assist with donor relations, including preparing thank you letters
- Track ticket purchases and sponsorships
- Create event name tags
- Design and print event materials
- Vendor coordination
- Assist with silent auction prep
- Assist with donor database management
- Update event website
- Other event-related administrative tasks and errands as needed
Qualifications:
- Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills
- Desire to learn about event planning, nonprofit fundraising and management
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Highly organized and able to manage multiple ongoing projects
- Extreme attention to detail
- Microsoft Excel skills or willingness to learn quickly are a must
- Enthusiasm for the Conservancy’s mission
