Education Evaluation & Planning Intern
The Education Intern works directly and closely with the Education Coordinator. This is an unpaid position that will introduce interns to planning, executing and evaluating educational events in an environmental non-profit setting. The Education Intern will also develop and implement a project that evaluates the educational strategies and materials used during tabling events. The evaluation process will include conducting a literature review, interviews with other non-profit educator that use tabling for educational and outreach purposes, and testing new strategies. The intern will summarize findings and recommendations into a written report and submit it to the Education Coordinator.
About TreeFolks:
TreeFolks is a local nonprofit that empowers Central Texans to build stronger communities through planting and caring for trees. We offer a variety of educational programs, including tree ID walks, tree mapping events, tree climbing events, a 6 month long Urban Forest Steward course and volunteer trainings. The Education Program also tables at events, offering tree information materials in order to reach out and engage people interested in trees and tree care.
Supervisor Accessibility:
Interns work directly with the Education Coordinator. The Education Coordinator and other staff are available to clarify questions necessary to complete a project.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with revising and developing educational materials for tabling at public events
- Evaluate tabling policies for outreach and educational purposes, and summarize findings and recommendations for improvement in a report submitted to the Education Coordinator
- Assist the Education Coordinator in collecting and synthesizing educational evaluation data for report narratives
- Communicate and coordinate with volunteers to plan tree ID walks, tree mapping and tree climbing events
- Work with the Education Coordinator to plan Urban Forest Steward class sessions by making room reservations, uploading files to Google drive, and collecting student learning data
- Load equipment and saplings needed for educational community events (Sapling Days, Tree ID hikes, Tree Mapping)
- Tend to saplings by watering, moving saplings in and out crates, and re-planting them in a raised bed.
Qualifications:
- Must be currently enrolled in an accredited University
- Be interested in environmental education, tree biology & green infrastructure, and environmental non-profit management models
- Ability to concentrate and complete projects in a fast paced professional environment
- Self-motivated and highly organized, focused, reliable and energetic
- A strong communicator – written and oral.
- Ability to take direction well from Coordinator and Staff
- Ability to communicate via email and phone clearly with vendors, volunteers, and TreeFolks staff
- Ability to lift 40 pounds
- Ability to tend saplings (watering), move saplings in and out of milk crates, and re-plant them in a raised bed
Expected Start and End Dates: ASAP or January 2018- until end of spring semester/May
Commitment: available for academic credit, 10-15 hours/week (2-3 days/week)
