Girls Empowerment Network Seeking Fall Interns!
The Girls Empowerment Network (GEN) is seeking strong leaders with a passion for girls’ issues to fill a number of unpaid internships within our agency. All interns must be committed to the mission of GEN, be team-oriented, possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and have reliable transportation.
GEN has the following internship available: Community Relations, Project Management, Direct Service, Fundraising, and Communications.

Project Management Intern
Purpose: The Project Management Intern will assist staff with planning and outreach for our annual statewide We Are Girls conference, which serves 3,000+ parents, girls, and educators every November. This position will also contribute to our organizations special initiatives; including campGEN, our summer program for girls in grades 4-8; Pathfinder Leadership Summit, a leadership development program for high school girls. The Project Management Intern can expect to gain introductory experience to large event planning, outreach management, nonprofit marketing, and public relations.
Location: GEN Office, 3000 S IH 35, Suite 400, 78704
Key Responsibilities:
- Brainstorming and implementing new ways to conduct community outreach and effectively spread GEN’s mission.
- Marketing and outreach to the Austin and Houston community throughout the school year via mailings, phone calls, tabling, and email communication.
- Recruiting breakout session presenters for We Are Girls.
- Executing day of logistics with the GEN team for all events taking place during semester.
- Additional responsibilities as assigned; all interns are welcome to cross train to spend a portion of their weekly time in our direct service programs, if desired.
Reports to: Project Manager
Length of Appointment: Semester
Time Commitment: Flexible, depending upon number of hours desired for credit. Minimum 10 hours/week maximum 32 hours/week. A few evening and weekend hours will be required.
Compensation: This is a volunteer intern position with college credit available

Communications Intern
Purpose: The Communications Intern will assist staff with the various aspects of external communications, including managing numerous social media platforms, creating blog content, and interviewing girls involved in GEN programming for a monthly feature. The Communications Intern can expect to gain introductory experience in social media management, blogging, interviewing, and online event promotion.
Location: GEN’s main office, 3000 S IH 35, Suite 400, 78704
Key Responsibilities:
- Managing GEN’s social media sites: Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and WordPress blog.
- Researching, creating, and publishing social media content relevant to GEN and girls’ issues.
- Brainstorming and creating new social media initiatives and campaigns to effectively spread GEN’s mission.
- Interviewing and writing a monthly blog post about GEN’s featured “Girl of the Month”.
- Tracking analytics across platforms to assess GEN’s impact, activity, and engagement online.
- Additional responsibilities as assigned; all interns are welcome to cross train to spend a portion of their weekly time in our direct service programs, if desired.

Direct Service Intern
Purpose: The Direct Service Intern will assist staff with co-facilitation of programs within the Girls Empowerment Network (GEN). They will work with a diverse group of girls in the Central Texas area and work in a team oriented environment. The Intern can expect to gain valuable group facilitation skills, learn outreach techniques, and gain knowledge about social-emotional programming..
Location: GEN’s main office, 3000 S IH 35, Suite 400, 78704
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the implementation of all GEN programs, including: clubGEN, 180, Girl Talk Workshops, We Are Girls Conference, Pathfinder, and Summer Camps.
- Co-facilitate a minimum of 4 groups/week, including 180 and clubGEN groups.
- Conduct intake, assessment, and provide referrals to participants when appropriate.
- Oversee logistical details of groups, such as recruiting participants and making reminder calls to participants.
- Attend community events in representation of GEN.
- Conduct bi-weekly reports for groups.

Community Relations Intern
Purpose: The Community Relations Intern will assist staff with the various aspects of community engagement and outreach, including representing GEN in the community, tabling at community events, and assisting with the recruitment, screening, and training of agency volunteers. The Community Relations Intern can expect to gain introductory experience in volunteer management, community outreach, and training facilitation.

Key Responsibilities:
- Representing GEN at community outreach events.
- Assisting Community Relations and Volunteer Manager with volunteer recruitment, agency publicity, and volunteer appreciation initiatives.
- Conducting initial volunteer screenings and interviews to assess the best placement for agency volunteers.
- Co-facilitating volunteer trainings and proving support at monthly Volunteer Nights.
- Interviewing and writing a monthly blog post about GEN’s featured “Volunteer Spotlight”.
- Additional responsibilities as assigned; all interns are welcome to cross train to spend a portion of their weekly time in our direct service programs, if desired.

Fundraising Intern
Purpose: The Fundraising Intern will assist staff with the various aspects of the management of a small shop Development Department at the Girls Empowerment Network (GEN). The Intern can expect to gain introductory experience in giving societies, donor relations, direct mail, and online campaigns.
Location: GEN’s main office, 3000 S IH 35, Suite 400, 78704
Key Responsibilities:
- Administrative duties—assist with database maintenance, mailings,
- Online campaign management—assist with GEN’s 2016 Amplify Austin
- Donor relations—logistics for donor giving society happy hours, collecting program stories to share with donors, and donor recognition (thank you letters and cards).
