COMPANY OVERVIEW:
HealthStart builds healthy communities through children’s science based health education. We teach kids how their body works, what it is made of and how this relates to what to eat and how to keep their bodies fit. HealthStart lessons also teach kids that taking care of one another and our environment builds community health and wellbeing. Health Promotion Interns will use their talents and health/nutrition knowledge to help change the world for the better through our What are YOU Feeding? Nutrition awareness program, Community Health Education Workshops (CHEWs), community outreach, implementing our marketing/public relations strategy planning and executing fundraising events. In addition, the selected intern(s) may have an opportunity to participate in hands on activities with children, data collection, and tasks that help us evaluate our effectiveness.
Health Promotion Intern
RESPONSIBILITIES:
HealthStart seeks a part-time Health Promotion intern with highly developed organizational skills, ability to manage their time, and creative talents. Interns work 12-15 hours per week under the supervision of our Outreach Coordinator.
You will be part of a team implementing and evaluating HealthStart’s health promotion programs and related tasks. All of these experiences should be highly transferrable to a professional public health, nutrition, or health promotion work environment.
Job responsibilities will include:
• Assisting in organizing and executing our What are YOU Feeding? Nutrition awareness
programs
• Assisting in organizing the development of a series of Community Health Education
Workshops to be executed in Summer 2018.
• Attending and assisting with Health Promotion activities, community wellness fairs, and
other events that educate and raise our profile within our community
• Working directly with HealthStart’s Scientific Committee
• Contributing Health and Nutrition related articles for HealthStart’s Monthly Newsletter,
press releases, articles for parenting and health magazines, and a blog
• Other health promotion related tasks as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates for the position must have experience with or a strong interest in public health, health promotion, health communications, event planning, nonprofit development or related activity. Employment experience or a strong interest in social entrepreneurship, social marketing, health and wellness or early childhood education is preferred. Must be familiar with basic computer operations including MS WORD, EXCEL, and the Internet specifically social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, email clients, etc.
In addition, candidates should have some or all of the following skills:
• A willingness to learn new things or new ways of doing things
• Ability to meet deadlines with little or no daily onsite supervision
• Attention to detail
• Excellent verbal and communication skills
• Enthusiasm about making a difference
• Bilingual preferred.

Public Relations/Communications Intern
The Public Relations & Communications Interns will help with a variety of tasks that may include media and community outreach, implementing our marketing/public relations strategy, and planning and executing fundraising events.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
HealthStart seeks a part-time Public Relations and Communications intern with highly developed organizational skills, ability to manage their time, and creative talents. Interns work 12-15 hours per week under the supervision of our Outreach Coordinator.
You will be part of a team shaping HealthStart’s message through social media that may include
daily Facebook and Twitter posts, monthly newsletter production, donor correspondence and
management, marketing campaigns designed to inform and attract education partners and related tasks. Additionally, you will help with the marketing and execution of our premier event, the I Heart HealthStart Fundraising Gala. All of these experiences should be highly transferrable to a professional work environment.
Job responsibilities will include:
• Raising HealthStart’s profile within our community
• Executing a media and public relations plan
• Working directly with HealthStart’s Board and Director
• Helping write HealthStart’s Monthly Newsletter
• Other public relations and communications related tasks as assigned
