The Gender Health Equity Lab is looking for several research assistants.
GHEL Mission: To reduce health disparities among vulnerable individuals who experience structural and syndemic factors that increase HIV/STI risk.
Job Description: Coder
Learning Objectives:
- Will learn how to code qualitative interviews
- Will learn how to discuss coding discrepancies with other coders
- Will become familiar with NVivo software
Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
- Clean and redact participant interviews
- Code interviews qualitatively, both independently and in group settings
- Enter coded data into NVivo, a qualitative coding software
- *Note interviews often contain sensitive material which may be upsetting to some people
Required Qualifications:
- Second-year undergraduate student or higher
- Human Subjects CITI Training Certification
- Availability to meet with other coders on a biweekly basis
- Attend at least 50% of biweekly lab meetings per semester
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong verbal communication skills
- Works well in team settings
- Self-motivated
Expectations
- Transcripts must always remain in the coder’s possession as they are extremely confidential
- Once transcripts are coded they must be returned to the GHEL and locked in a filing cabinet
- Transcripts must be entered into NVivo in the GHEL
- Once transcripts are entered into NVivo bring them to BEL 718 to be shredded
- At least one transcript coded every 2 weeks
- Check in with Heran after each transcript is coded
- Enter which step of coding stage into Master Task List
- Questions or falling behind—let Project Coordinator (Heran) know immediately to help or find another coder to help—getting coding done is more important
- If coding is continually late, you will only be able to code while present in the lab
Job Description: Data Entry
Learning Objectives:
- Will become familiar with REDCap
- Will learn the difference between and importance of both qualitative and quantitative data
Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
- Enter participant data into REDCap
- Convert qualitative participant data into quantitative data
- Enter quantified data into Excel
Required Qualifications:
- Second-year undergraduate student or higher
- Human Subjects CITI Training Certification
- Attend at least 50% of biweekly lab meetings per semester
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong reading comprehension skills
- Works well in team settings
- Self-motivated
Expectations
- Data entry must occur in GHEL
- Data entry from interview must occur within 2 business days after interview
Job Description: Recruiter
Learning Objectives:
- Will become familiar with local community organizations who serve the study’s target population
- Will enhance communication skills through networking with communication organizations
Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
- Post and distribute flyers around the community and in organizations
- Develop relationships with community organizations on the phone or in-person
- Find new appropriate areas or organizations to recruit participants
Required Qualifications:
- Second-year undergraduate student or higher
- Human Subjects CITI Training Certification
- Attend at least 50% of biweekly lab meetings per semester
- Transportation
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Works well in team settings
- Self-motivated
Expectations
- Recruiter must go into the field once a week and to different locations each time
- Keep track of destinations for travel reimbursement (must always start and end at UT regardless of where you actually start and end)
Job Description: Researcher
Learning Objectives:
- Will learn to conduct comprehensive literature searchers
- Will learn how to use NIH REPORTeR
- Will become familiar with information needed to develop grants
Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
- Conduct literature reviews on topics
- Search for scientific measures
- Search for current studies through current literature or NIH REPORTeR
- Contact local organizations
Required Qualifications:
- Second-year undergraduate student or higher
- Human Subjects CITI Training Certification
- Attend at least 50% of biweekly lab meetings per semester
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong reading comprehension skills
- Prior research experience
- Works well in team settings
- Self-motivated
Expectations
- Research is due 1 week from day assigned unless otherwise specified
- Even if you are not done, check in 1 week after assigned to provide update with your status
- Questions or falling behind—let Project Coordinator (Heran) or Dr. Nydegger know immediately in order to help or ask another researcher to provide assistance to ensure the task is completed
- If research tasks are continually left unfinished after assigned, you will be only be given research tasks while present in the lab
Job Description: Interview Assistant
Learning Objectives:
- Will learn how to conduct qualitative interviews
- Will learn the process prior to and after conducting qualitative interviews
Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
- Prepare interview bag with appropriate materials
- Attend interviews, taking notes of observations
- Compile materials from interview to prepare for transcription and data entry
Required Qualifications:
- Second-year undergraduate student or higher
- Human Subjects CITI Training Certification
- Attend at least 50% of biweekly lab meetings per semester
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Works well in team settings
- Self-motivated
- Transportation preferred but not required
Expectations
- Must arrive at interview location at least 15 minutes prior to interview start time (continual tardiness will lead to losing this opportunity)
- Must dress appropriately which means casual but no short shorts or shirts that are short, or exposing in any way. Jeans, long jean shorts, other pants (except dress pants), and casual shirts are acceptable. Do not overdress as this gives off a power dynamic that can lead to participants closing up.
- Make sure to double check that the bag and folders have ALL materials needed, do not assume the interview assistant before you did everything. Ensure the recorders have enough battery life.
