Division of Student Affairs Internship Program, UT Austin – Summer 21

Program Overview

The Summer Internship Program provides undergraduate students at the University of Texas at Austin with an opportunity to develop the skillset necessary to transition from college to the workforce. The program dates are May 31, 2021 – August 6, 2021. For this summer, we anticipate the majority of positions will be virtual experiences.

Application Process

Candidates must submit a resume and cover letter through HireUTexas powered by Handshake. We encourage candidates to apply to any and all of the positions which interest them. Interviews will take place by the direct supervisors of each position after the application deadline of February 14th.

Competitive Compensation

Interns are hired to work 19 hours a week for 10 weeks during the summer. Positions pay $15/hour and depending on need can qualify for housing assistance. Additional documentation is required for housing assistance, you must have been selected to participate in the internship program to qualify.

Career Readiness

Internships include a variety of skills and subjects designed to prepare interns for success after graduation.

Innovation

Each intern will be challenged to complete a project-based internship designed to improve the UT campus.

Professional Development curriculum

Interns are expected to engage in 10 weeks of shared learning with a cohort of peers.

 

2021 Internship Opportunities

Below are a handful of internships BDP would like to highlight as it pertains to our students and programs.

BeVocal Marketing Intern – Longhorn Wellness Center

The BeVocal Marketing Intern will develop social media campaigns with messages and web content to promote BeVocal. The intern will develop and edit material and updates for the website or other communication channels. The intern will create outreach materials as needed, such as infographics. Body Positivity Intern – Longhorn Wellness Center

The intern will work with the Mental Health Promotion Coordinator at the Longhorn Wellness Center to create body positivity/health at every size/body image public health programming on the University of Texas at Austin’s campus. The intern will research programming on other campuses, provide a literature review on relevant research, create recommendations for programs/initiatives, and help to create a marketing plan for implementing programs on campus. Communications Intern – Longhorn Wellness Center

The intern will review and create web content for the Longhorn Wellness website. They will assist with health communication material development and create promotion content. The intern will assist with social media analytics and propose news ideas to promote the Longhorn Wellness programs and services. Community Impact Intern – Center for Community Engagement

This position will support telling the story of John S Chase, the first black graduate of the School of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin, who designed the new off-campus location of the Center for Community Engagement. Depending on experience and interest, this intern would create a virtual tour of the neighborhood in East Austin, collect and write about the history of the building itself, assist with the fundraising campaign to finish renovations on the building, build up content for the website and social media, write feature stories on a topic related to the building or John S Chase, and assist with planning fall welcome events. All CCE interns serve on a committee, typically planning events like our annual volunteer fair, Tower Awards, or any of our days of service. Creative Design Intern – UHS and CMHC – Public Information Team

Graphic Design Intern – Office of the Dean of Students

Assist the Director of Strategic and Executive Communications and Marketing Coordinator with digital and print design for web, social, print collateral and promotional items for the Office of the Dean of Students and all the units within. Work in a fast-paced and changing environment and manage a variety of assignments while gaining valuable experience and creating work to add to your portfolio. Health Promotions Intern – SHIFT

This internship will assist SHIFT staff in moving our pilot initiatives forward. Projects may include helping the SHIFT team roll out a technology platform to help inform student conversation around substance use; develop and create communications to further SHIFT’s message via messaging campaigns and/or social media platforms; or assisting in peer-peer workshop development. The student will draw from various data to create informed messaging and bring their unique voice to inform student-centered communications and projects. Infection Prevention and Research Intern – University Health Services – Administration

The intern will review standardized practices for infection prevention and safety in the healthcare setting. The student will assess environmental cleaning practices in the healthcare setting and develop quality improvement initiatives. Media and Design Intern – Student Activities, Office of the Dean of Students

The intern will produce training videos reviewing processes and online systems that student organization leaders utilize, including the room reservation system and HornsLink. They will also be tasked with creating informational graphics explaining policies and procedures related to student organizations. Additionally, they will generate content to be distributed to student organization leaders and posted on the Student Activities website. Multimedia Intern – Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life

The multimedia intern will develop modules for that explain the Sorority and Fraternity Life’s programs, policies and services. The intern will curate, compose and publish content for use within social media, website, and newsletters. The student will have the opportunity to research best practices of the utilization of technology in other SLF communities from different higher education institutions. The internship will provide an experience for the student to produce original content as a resource for SFL and collaborate with supervisor for idea development, updates and troubleshooting. Program Coordinator Intern – Center for Students in Recovery

The intern will assist the center staff with reviewing and optimizing the Recovery Ally Training program, including developing new training materials and planning effective campus outreach.
This intern will assist in the creation and revision of program materials. The intern will articulate the relationship between the program goals and evaluation data. They will assess qualitative and quantitative data included in program evaluations and issue recommendations on ways to improve the program or program materials. The student will work on collecting, organizing, and compiling reports from data available in Qualtrics. Purchasing Intern – University Housing and Dining

The intern will conduct research and collect data related to UHD Dining. The intern will be part of the Specific Menu of Change principles to move the department toward their sustainability goals. The intern will take a role in the project’s goal of obtaining sustainable and local products following the Menus of Change Principal. Social Media & Outreach Strategist Intern – UHS & CMHC – Public Information

The position will focus on researching and curating content for the Healthyhorns social media account and developing the Fall 2021 social media strategy. The intern will evaluate the effectiveness of content across platforms contributing to outreach and engagement strategies for new UT students and provide student feedback for web redesign. Summer Programming Intern – Gender & Sexuality Center

The Gender and Sexuality Center (GSC) is looking for summer interns, and one of them could be you! Our summer interns primarily work with our summer orientation sessions, which includes tabling, talking with students, assisting with the orientation sessions themselves, and other special projects. Our interns also work on book and movie reviews, research about possible speakers to come to campus, help with our social media and with the GSC’s Ana Sisnett Library. Students are encouraged to take and share leadership roles, recognize hidden talents, think critically, challenge assumptions, develop their individual identities and goals, initiate new activities, and define their own experiences. Sustainability Intern – University Unions

The sustainability internship focuses on providing support for sustainability activities in the University Unions (UU) facilities including project coordination, research and presentations. The intern will research and/or support sustainability opportunities or projects – particularly with the University Unions Food Truck program and its Zero Waste catering events. The intern will benchmark the department against other union organizations across the country. They will determine feasibility of a “Green Team” to support logistics and diversion during catering events and food courts in peak periods. Sustainability Outreach Intern – University Housing and Dining

This position will assist in the development and operations of sustainability programs and outreach throughout New Student Orientation. This includes organizing educational opportunities through passive (signage, flyers, etc.) and active (tabling, events, etc.) efforts. Although this internship will assist in addressing all areas of sustainability, there will be a particular focus on proper waste sorting and waste diversion. The intern will develop program outcomes and goals, assemble programming materials, and serve as spokesperson for campus’ sustainability efforts and opportunities. The student will develop signage, written materials and optionally work in the gardens. UT Outpost Food Pantry and Career Closet Operations Intern – Student Emergency Services in the Office of the Dean of Students

The intern will help oversee the operations of the UT Outpost as it addresses food insecurity and supports students impacted by financial hardships. Wellness Intern – Longhorn Wellness Center

The position will provide support for general Longhorn Wellness Center (LWC) outreach programming, including the development, implementation, and evaluation of physical health and nutrition related programs and interventions. The intern will complete research into relevant health and wellness topics and assist with developing innovative ways to deliver our programming virtually.
