About UT Resource Recovery
Resource Recovery is a department within UT Facilities Services that encompasses both Zero Waste and Surplus Property. Resource Recovery is tasked with improving sustainability at UT, specifically with regards to reaching our Zero Waste goal to divert 90% of all materials from the landfill. Major diversion strategies include source reduction, reuse, recycling, and composting. As a result, we have the opportunity to partner and observe material processes across campus.
About Zero Waste Hero
Zero Waste Hero is a certification program for students that seeks to educate the UT Austin community on waste diversion and proper sorting and create a zero waste community through on-campus participation. The program is a collaboration between Resource Recovery and University Housing and Dining, and this position is funded by the UT Green Fund.
Zero Waste Hero Curriculum Development Lead Internship
Position Description
This position will spearhead the remaining redesign and expansion of Zero Waste Hero to prepare for our re-launch in Spring 2022. Essential functions of the Curriculum Development Lead include:
- Develop & write content for course modules, including researching external articles and videos
- Collaborate with relevant professors, staff, and student organizations to prepare pre-recorded content for course modules
- Work with partners and student organizations to create and consolidate UT volunteer opportunities for ZWH participants
- Set up back end of Canvas course
You would participate in weekly team meetings with Resource Recovery student interns to share your work, as well as meet with the other Zero Waste Hero staff as a project team weekly. The work schedule will vary based on Project Team, but all efforts will be made to align with student schedules. Team Meetings may occur after 5pm on a weekday and some weekend activities may be necessary but will be scheduled in advance.
The majority of this position will be done virtually, with occasional on-campus projects such as outreach events. This will continue to be re-evaluated based on project needs. Interns are expected to work 10 hours per week. This position is for Fall 2021 with the opportunity to extend to Spring 2022.
As a result of this experience, you will:
- Have a greater knowledge of sustainability considerations with regard to waste decrease and diversion
- Practice project management activities including planning, coordination, and implementation
- Enhance collaboration skills with other team members
- Work with a variety of campus entities to achieve project goals
- Engage and educate peers and staff to motivate behavior change, such as proper recycling techniques
Qualifications
- Interest and/or experience in sustainability and willingness to learn about the inner workings of recycling, composting, solid waste, and surplus
- Ability to maintain professionalism and represent the department well when communicating with faculty, staff, and students
- Timely and effective communicator
- Strong research and writing skills
- Punctual
- Ability to produce quality work individually and in teams
- Organized, detail-oriented, and adaptable

Zero Waste Hero Engagement & Outreach Lead Internship
Position Description
As we complete a program redesign and expansion, we are looking for a passionate student to invoke excitement and recruit students for the Zero Waste Hero program re-launch in Spring 2022. Essential functions of the Engagement & Outreach Lead include:
- Create advertising & promotion plan for certification launch
- Plan & execute tabling events to highlight program goals and encourage recruitment
- Develop community building opportunities & events for participants
- Design & prepare for distribution of achievement items and promotional materials
You would participate in weekly team meetings with Resource Recovery student interns to share your work, as well as meet with the other Zero Waste Hero staff as a project team weekly. The work schedule will vary based on Project Team, but all efforts will be made to align with student schedules.
