UNDERGRADUATE INTERNSHIP JOB DESCRIPTION
DURATION: Seasonal FALL-SPRING 2023
Start date: September 6, 2023 End date: April 26, 2024
Working dates and hours: The working dates within each semester will be defined by the Wildflower Center but follow the calendar for the University of Texas.
Intern is expected to complete a total of 456 hours over the course of the 24-week internship (12 weeks in fall and 12 weeks of spring). Weekly hours may fluctuate. The total number of hours is based on a 19-hour work week.
COMPENSATION: $8000 Stipend (paid in six installments over the fall and spring semesters through the scholarships office)
INTERNSHIP SUMMARY
The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center offers internships to qualified undergraduate student applicants, attending the University of Texas and surrounding colleges, in the fields of communications, operations, education, horticulture and research. This program frames the Center on 284 acres of gardens, woodlands, and savannas with nature trails as a teaching and learning center for students to gain real world, hands-on, practical experience with field experts.
The goal of this internship program is to foster job skills in nonprofit and environmental careers for undergraduate students in a variety of departments:
Note: Each of these departments will host an intern. Interns will not work in every department. Please specify your area(s) of interest by the title presented below in your cover letter.
Horticulture- Intern will have an opportunity to apply the skills from the classroom in a botanic garden. Intern will assist staff horticulturists with regular maintenance in garden, nursery, and greenhouses with propagation. Work includes weeding, planting, watering, pruning, grooming, preparing beds, mulching and labeling.
Education- Student will assist staff in conducting educational programs and the implementation of self-guided resources for teachers. Interns will gain experience with guest engagement as they interact with guests of all ages during programs. Intern will have the opportunity to develop a project around informal learning/interpretation.
Finance‐ Accounting/Finance/Business Student will gain experience working in a Finance department. Intern will assist staff with various office duties including data entry, filing (electronic included), data validation, and developing and testing standard operating procedure (SOP). Other opportunity to learn & apply skills in analysis, ad‐hoc reporting, creating dashboard, including using MS Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Smartsheet, SharePoint, and Tableau.
Communications- The Communications intern will assist communications staff with editorial and content support, public and media relations and digital marketing efforts. The Comms intern will hone their writing and marketing skills and will learn a wide range of communication strategies.
Graphic Design – The design intern will assist communications staff with graphic design to help with branded merchandise for the store, marketing, and social media efforts. This intern will hone design application skills to create elements in line with the Center’s brand guidelines and introduce seasonal branded merchandise to our shop.
Science and Conservation- Students will have the opportunity to join our research team on a variety of ongoing studies relating to habitat restoration, fire ecology, and pollinator conservation. This work will be highly collaborative, and will include fieldwork, data collection, plant identification, data organization, and outreach. Interns must be comfortable with spending time outside and working as part of a team
NPONA- Fall semester only. The intern will work with the Native Plants of North America (NPONA) program coordinator to prepare digital images and data for publication on the NPONA website. Work includes building a large data set and processing digital images in preparation for online publication. The intern should be proficient in MS Excel. Knowledge of Photoshop and a basic understanding of botanical nomenclature helpful but not required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Interns are required to fulfill a minimum 456-hour commitment during 24-weeks of fall 2023 and spring 2024 program.
- Work with various departmental staff to observe and learn about the daily operations.
- Position alternates time in the offices and in public areas with staff, volunteers and guests.
- Attend department meetings.
- Interns will complete a project throughout their internship and will give a presentation of their experience to staff at the completion of the internship.
- Ability to take direction and work in a team environment.
- Duties may include clerical or office tasks, that may be done remotely.
- Ability to work efficiently with minimal direct supervision.
- Interns may be required to perform moderate physical activities such as bending, lifting and pushing while working in an outdoor environment in hot temperatures.
- Interns must have the ability to work outside in all types of weather.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be a currently enrolled as an undergrad student attending the University of Texas
- Must have reliable transportation to and from 4801 La Crosse Ave. Austin, TX 78739.
- Must be able to work in person a portion of the week.
