Gender and Ethnicity in Elections Data Team
With Drs. Stephanie Holmsten and Rob Moser
The Gender and Ethnicity in Elections Research Project explores the election of women, ethnic minorities and minoritized women around the world. With growing diversity, we seek to understand the institutional mechanisms that support the election of representatives from historically marginalization communities. Our most recent research can be read in Journal of Women, Politics and Policy (https://doi.org/10.1080/1554477X.2023.2256625)
Research interns will collect information about the name, political party, gender, and ethnicity of elected officials. Interns will select countries and detail the diversity of the legislative body using parliamentary websites, journal articles, newspaper coverages, and social media. Data is collected in Excel.
The research team meets once a week to discuss coding progress. Interns are assessed according to progress made on each case, depth and accuracy of data collection, and attentiveness during weekly meetings.
Most importantly, interns should have a curiosity about systems of representation and marginalization. Interns should be familiar with Excel, and comfortable with perusing newspaper articles and academic journals to understand social divisions and identity.
