The Democracy Fund Internships Spring 2018- PAID (Positions are Based in Washington DC)

Elections Program Internship

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Democracy Fund is seeking highly motivated undergrads, graduate students, and recent graduates from across the political spectrum to support the Elections Program for the Spring 2018 term.

The Elections Program focuses on the administration of elections, modern registration, and trust in elections by supporting unbiased research, bipartisan dialogue, and unconventional solutions that will ensure the views and votes of the American public come first in our democracy. We’re looking for candidates with an interest in either election administration, registration modernization, or trust in elections. A successful candidate believes the election system must provide the public with confidence that their voices can be heard and that they have the ability to hold their leaders accountable for their actions.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support efforts by the Democracy Fund to improve data collection, knowledge management, strengthen learning systems, and foster a culture of learning Provide logistical support during meetings with reform leaders, political figures, and academic authorities—this may include note-taking, drafting memoranda, proofing and copy editing materials, and welcoming visitors to the Democracy Fund office.
  • Research issues in key policy areas relating to the Democracy Fund’s strategic objectives and oversee regular database updates.
  • Actively engage with all staff at the Democracy Fund as a capable and collaborative team member. We count on our interns to contribute to policy discussions and help develop solutions to some of the greatest problems our nation faces today.
  • Assist in evaluating grantmaking opportunities and with the preparation of internal memoranda and other materials that are part of the grantmaking process.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:

  • A deep passion for strengthening American democracy
  • Willingness to contribute, learn, and respectfully engage with those who have different perspectives
  • Ability to work at least 3 days per week (20 hours minimum; full time preferred)
  • Experience in the field or enrollment in an accredited university program; individuals pursuing a Master’s or higher degree preferred
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Professional demeanor
  • Success in developing and maintaining institutional, political, and personal relationships
  • Flexibility and initiative to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Eagerness to learn, high self-motivation, and orientation towards details

Public Square Program Internship

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Democracy Fund is seeking highly motivated undergrads, graduate students, and recent graduates from across the political spectrum to support the Public Square Program for the Spring 2018 term.

The Public Square Program focuses on vibrant media and citizen engagement by supporting innovations and institutions that help people better understand and participate in the democratic process. We’re looking for candidates with experience in journalism, communications, and/or civic innovation who are passionate about the future of journalism and making our political system more effective. A successful candidate believes that media plays a critical role in the public square, and believes that all communities should have access to the news and information they need to participate fully in our democracy.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide logistical support during meetings with journalism grantees and partners—this may include note-taking, drafting memoranda, proofing and copy editing materials, and welcoming visitors to the Democracy Fund office.
  • Research issues in key policy areas relating to the Democracy Fund’s strategic objectives and oversee regular database updates.
  • Actively engage with all staff at the Democracy Fund as a capable and collaborative team member. We count on our interns to contribute to discussions and help develop solutions to some of the greatest problems our nation faces today.
  • Assist in evaluating grantmaking opportunities and with the preparation of internal memoranda and other materials that are part of the grantmaking process.
  • Provide your unique perspective on the future of local news, through the contribution of expertise, research, and writing.Contribute to the Public Square’s Local Fix newsletter and Local News Lab website.

Strategy, Impact and Learning Internship

POSITION SUMMARY: The Democracy Fund is seeking a highly motivated graduate student or recent graduate to support the Democracy Fund’s Strategy, Impact and Learning team for the Spring 2018 term.

The Strategy, Impact and Learning Team supports Democracy Fund in developing strong organizational and programmatic strategies, evaluating their effectiveness, and facilitating reflection and learning across the organization. Using systems thinking and rigorous inquiry, we strive to ensure that Democracy Fund is making strategic and informed choices that achieve impact. We believe that through experimentation, learning and adaptation Democracy Fund can more effectively support the health and resilience of the American political system.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support efforts by the Democracy Fund to improve data collection, knowledge management, strengthen learning systems, and foster a culture of learning.
  • Research issues in key policy areas relating to the Democracy Fund’s strategic objectives and oversee regular database updates.
  • Provide support for the development of long-term evaluation plans and evaluation projects for Democracy Fund Program Initiatives, including supporting a re-development of the Fund’s reporting systems.
  • Provide logistical support during meetings with staff, reform leaders, political figures, and academics—this may include note-taking, drafting memoranda, proofing and copy editing materials, and welcoming visitors to the Democracy Fund office.
  • Actively engage with all staff at the Democracy Fund as a capable and collaborative team member. We count on our interns to contribute to policy discussions and help develop solutions to some of the greatest problems our nation faces today.
  • Assist other Democracy Fund team members, collaborate internally within Democracy Fund, and assist with various operational, administrative, and logistical duties as needed. Other duties relating to team or organizational activities as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:

  • Background in political science, public policy, or a related field, or enrollment in an accredited university program; individuals pursuing a Master’s or higher degree preferred
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, experience conducting independent research.

HealthStart Foundation Game Programmer Intern- Spring 2018

Game Programmer Intern

COMPANY OVERVIEW:
HealthStart builds healthy communities through children’s science based health education. We teach kids how their body works, what it is made of and how this relates to what to eat and how to keep their bodies fit. HealthStart lessons also teach kids that taking care of one another and our environment builds community health and wellbeing.

Interns will use their creative talents to help change the world for the better through creation of a health education mobile game that will be used to teach core concepts from HealthStart’s nine-part curriculum.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

HealthStart seeks a part-time Interactive Game Development intern with highly developed organizational skills, ability to manage their time, and creative talents. Interns work 12-15 hours per week under the supervision of our Curriculum Designer.

The intern will work in a team environment to help program Monstralia: A Healthy Life For Your Little Monster™ app from written design documents and wireframes. The intern will participate in user testing which involves identifying ease of play, level of engagement, efficacy in conveying health messages, and opportunities for improving game play. The intern will work with the team to fix design flaws and bugs identified during user testing.

In addition to programming tasks, the intern also may be involved in actual design of the art, backgrounds, and animation related to the game if their skills and interests enable them to do so.

Required tasks/skills include: 

  • Ability to organize and adjust Monstralia GitHub
  • Proficiency using C# in Unity
  • Ability to work with existing code
  • Other tasks as assigned.

 

Additional desired skills

  • Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite
  • Animation and/or illustration experience
  • Experience creating illustrations using drawing tablet in Photoshop a plus.
  • Bilingual

Qualifications
Candidates for the position must have educational or work experience programming in C# and game development. Employment experience or a strong interest in health and wellness or early childhood education is preferred. Candidate must have experience with the Unity game Engine. All candidates must have basic computer operations skills including MS WORD, EXCEL, the Internet, and HTML. If interested in creating game art assets candidates should have experience with the Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, InDesign, and/or Illustrator.

 

In addition, candidates should have the following skills:

  • Ability to communicate quickly and effectively
  • Ability to stay organized and up to date with the various tasks and assignments.

1000 Friends of Oregon Summer 2018 Paid Internship

1000 FRIENDS OF OREGON
PAUL GERHARDT, JR. INTERNSHIP
ANNOUNCEMENT OF PUBLIC INTEREST INTERNSHIP
FOR SUMMER 2018 IN PORTLAND, OREGON

1000 Friends of Oregon is a forty-two year old public interest organization that advocates smart growth
through comprehensive land use and transportation planning, using Oregon’s renowned planning program.
We work with citizens across Oregon to enhance the state’s quality of life by building livable urban and
rural communities and protecting family farms and forests.

The Gerhardt Internship was established in 1986 to commemorate the life and work of 1000 Friends’ first
planner, Paul Gerhardt, Jr.

PURPOSE
The purpose of the internship is to provide an opportunity for on-the-job experience for planning students or
those in similar fields, especially for those interested in public service.

TERMS
The position is for 35 hours per week for 10 weeks, at the 1000 Friends’ Portland office. A stipend of
$4,500 is provided. Limited additional funds are available for assistance with travel expenses to and from
Portland.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

SUPERVISION
The intern will work on one or two large projects, such as 1000 Friends’ efforts to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions through linking land use and transportation planning, ensuring communities plan for affordable
and diverse housing, or to preserve farm land. The intern might also work on smaller, short-term projects to
gain a wider acquaintance with Oregon’s land use program. Supervision will be provided by the 1000
Friends’ staff member overseeing each project.

SELECTION CRITERIA
The criteria used in selecting the intern include academic excellence, demonstrated interest in public service,
evidence of initiative, and the ability to work independently. Preference will be given to undergraduates
majoring in planning or a related field and graduates who have not yet begun graduate school. However,
students in graduate school will be considered. Law students are specifically excluded.

APPLICATIONS AND DEADLINES
Applications should include a cover letter, resume, academic transcript, writing sample, and three reference
letters, including at least two from professors familiar with the applicant’s work. References should offer a
confidential evaluation of the applicant’s qualifications as measured against the criteria above and should be
sent directly to 1000 Friends of Oregon; references should provide full contact information. The writing
sample can be on any topic and need not be lengthy. Complete applications, including reference letters,
must be received by Thursday, February 15, 2018. The intern will be selected by Thursday, March 22,
2018 and will be notified by phone shortly thereafter. Those not selected will be informed by letter. Please
