Job Title: Youth Civic Education and Engagement Intern (20 hrs/wk)

Stipend: $450 summer, $750 fall/spring if funds available.

Job Description: The internship is based in Austin and provides general support for the CDF-TX Youth Civic Education and Engagement initiative. The intern works 20 hours/week supporting both our policy and organizing work to increase youth civic education and engagement. The youth civic engagement intern provides substantive policy research and reports and monitors legislative committees and the State Board of Education on improving youth civic engagement and education in Texas. Additionally, the intern assists with outreach to partners and school districts on behalf of the Texas Civic Education Roundtable to support the prioritization of culturally sustaining civic education in Texas’ public school classrooms. The intern also supports outreach to young people statewide to support our high school voter registration campaign, as well as provides critical support in developing training curriculums to support young people’s knowledge of and engagement with state legislative and local civic processes.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Plans civic engagement opportunities with and for youth
  • Policy research, briefs and training material
  • Conducts research on public policy, media trends and other subjects as needed
  • Assists in the development and execution of special projects
  • Assist in maintaining CDF’s social media platforms

The intern works 10 hours/week, and provides substantive research, compiles reports, monitors immigration news and helps with the execution of advocacy-related activities, including story collection, public education, special event planning, newsletters, and social media work.

 Primary Responsibilities:

  • Policy research, briefs and training material
  • Compiles bi-monthly immigration newsletters
  • Conducts research on immigration policy, media trends, and other subjects as needed
  • Assists in the development and execution of special projects
  • Perform other division, department, and organization-wide special projects as needed and assigned

Job Description: The internship is based in Austin and provides social media and communications support for the CDF-TX Policy Department. The intern works 20 hours/week, and will contribute to social media campaigns to promote the research, reports, legislative issues and advocacy-related activities of the organization. CDF-TX organizes advocate training/recruitment, story collection, public education, legislator visits, legislative briefings, and public policy events.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Supports CDF’s social media platforms
  • Monitors blogs and social media accounts of allied groups to develop basic content knowledge about current policy issues related to health care and children’s health
  • With supervision, plans, prepares, and executes social media campaigns (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) focused on current public policy issues and other subjects as needed

Prosper Center Tax Help Opportunities

Foundation Communities is seeking a team of enthusiastic, motivated individuals who can help us prepare more than 20,000 returns at our Community Tax Centers (CTCs) for the 2020 tax filing season. CTC team members make a tremendous impact in the Austin community while gaining meaningful non-profit experience working for a well-respected organization. Every year we prepare thousands of tax returns for households earning less than $55,000, saving clients hundreds of dollars in tax preparation fees and bringing millions of dollars in refunds to our local economy. In addition to tax preparation, we also provide opportunities for clients to save and improve their financial well-being.  Under the direction of the supervising site managers, intake coordinators greet clients upon arrival at the tax center, conduct eligibility screenings, and assist taxpayers in assembling all required information and documents. Full-time and part-time schedules including weekdays, evenings, and weekends are available. This position pays $14 per hour from December 2019 – April 2020.

HealthStart Foundation Internships Available

HealthStart builds healthy communities through children’s science-based health education. We teach kids how their body works, what it is made of and how this relates to what to eat and how to keep their bodies fit. HealthStart lessons also teach kids that taking care of one another and our environment builds community health and wellbeing.

Game Programmer Intern

HealthStart seeks a part-time Interactive Game Development intern with highly developed organizational skills, ability to manage their time, and creative talents. Interns work 12-15 hours per week under the supervision of our Curriculum Designer. The intern will work in a team environment to help program MonstraliaTM: A Healthy Life For Your Little Monster™ app from written design documents and wireframes. The intern will participate in user testing which involves identifying ease of play, level of engagement, efficacy in conveying health messages, and opportunities for improving game play. The intern will work with the team to fix design flaws and bugs identified during user testing. In addition to programming tasks, the intern also may be involved in actual design of the art, backgrounds, and animation related to the game if their skills and interests enable them to do so.

Required tasks/skills include:

  • Ability to organize and adjust Monstralia Unity Organizer
  • Proficiency using C# in Unity
  • Ability to work with existing code

Additional desired skills:

  • Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite
  • Animation and/or illustration experience
  • Experience creating illustrations using drawing tablet in Photoshop a plus.
  • Bilingual

Qualifications: Candidates for the position must have educational or work experience programming in C# and game development. Employment experience or a strong interest in health and wellness or early childhood education is preferred. Candidate must have experience with the Unity game Engine. Game Illustration Internship

HealthStart seeks a part-time intern with excellent writing, organizational skills and creative talents. You will work directly with our Curriculum Coordinator who produces and designs our curriculum, marketing, educational and outreach materials. You will help create graphics for an upcoming health education game, Monstralia: A Healthy Life For Your Little Monster. This game will have 25 different mini-games. Each game will require the creation of numerous graphics. All of these experiences should be highly transferable to any other creative work environment.

Job responsibilities may include:

  • Create graphics for an upcoming health education mobile game using Photoshop and Illustrator.
  • Create backgrounds using a drawing tablet for an upcoming mobile game.
  • Help create promotional materials for upcoming events such as flyers, web banners, and other materials.
  • Create visual solutions in effective ways in print and electronic media.
  • Develop materials for summer children’s health education workshop programs.

Candidates for the position must have educational or work experience with illustration, design, or related activity. Employment experience or a strong interest in health and wellness or early childhood education is preferred. You will be part of a team shaping HealthStart’s message through social media that may include daily Facebook and Twitter posts, monthly newsletter production, donor correspondence and management, marketing campaigns designed to inform and attract education partners and related tasks. Additionally, you will help with the marketing of one of our premier fundraising events, Austin Gives Miles. All of these experiences should be highly transferrable to a professional work environment.

  • Raising HealthStart’s profile within our community
  • Executing a media and public relations plan
  • Working directly with HealthStart’s Board and Director

Health Start is currently seeking a part-time Development Intern with a strong interest in or prior experience with fundraising; grant writing, and event planning and execution who can work about 12-15 hours per week.
