Department of Homeland Security HS-STEM Summer Internships available

The competition for the 2013 HS-STEM Summer Internships sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is currently open.
In 2013 DHS will sponsor about 60 summer internships for students majoring in homeland security disciplines related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM). These internships are open to undergraduate students in a broad spectrum of DHS mission-relevant research areas and graduate students interested in the specific field of Nuclear and Radiological Threat Detection.

The DHS HS-STEM program will cover student’s travel expenses and includes a stipend. Undergraduate students receive a stipend of $500 per week ($5,000 for 10 weeks). Graduate students receive a stipend of $700 per week ($7,000 for 10 weeks). 10-week research experiences are offered at:

National laboratories: Argonne, Idaho, Lawrence Berkeley, Lawrence Livermore, Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, Pacific Northwest, Sandia, Savannah River

Other Research facilities: Homeland Security Studies and Analysis Institute, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Coast Guard Research and Development Center, and more!

U.S. citizenship required

Research assistant position with Prevention Research Lab

The Prevention Research Lab, operated by Dr. Keryn E. Pasch in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education, is searching for an undergraduate research assistant for the Spring 2013 semester. The focus of our lab is on understanding, preventing, and reducing youth risk behaviors.

An undergraduate research assistant is needed to create stimuli and contribute in the overall design of an upcoming study that involves children’s and adolescent’s attention to television commercials.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Fluency in video editing software
  • Knowledge of recording and transferring recorded television or YouTube commercials to video files for use on a computer
  • Prior research experience is a plus but not necessary

BENEFITS:

  • Hands- on experience with the research process, with an emphasis on the relationship media has with health among youth
  • Potentially assisting with research sessions to gain hands on experience working with youth
  • Gain knowledge of eye-tracking equipment and software

The Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program – Summer 2013 Internship

College students can learn about environmental issues and gain professional experience through a paid, full-time summer internship, either at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality or in the private sector.

Eligibility requirements:
-Completed at least 60 undergraduate semester hours at the end of the most immediate past fall semester
-Be enrolled full time during the current spring semester and have a minimum academic grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale at the time of application
-Be eligible to work in the United States
-Should be enrolled in environmental or other science-related disciplines including, but not limited to, the following: biology, chemistry, geology, engineering, public health, public administration, finance, accounting, business, computer science, law, communications, criminal justice.

To apply:
First, submit an online application form. Applications accepted January 1, 2013-March 15, 2013.

Next, submit all of the following supporting documentation (may be submitted separately or together):
-a professor’s letter of recommendation
-current official academic transcript to include courses in progress current spring semester
-verification of current spring semester enrollment (required if transcript does not list courses in progress current spring semester)
