Internship with Refugee Services of Texas

Refugee Services of Texas, Inc. (RST) was founded in 1978 and is a nonprofit social service agency dedicated to resettling and providing social services to refugees and other displaced persons. RST resettles refugees, asylees, parolees, and victims of human trafficking from thirty different countries of origin with the majority of clientele currently originating from Burma, Bhutan, Iraq, Cuba, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Eritrea, and Somalia. Refugees are defined as individuals who flee their native countries due to persecution based upon race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership of a particular social group. RST’s mission is to provide quality services guided by principles of human compassion and dignity.

 

Refugee Services of Texas, Inc. in Austin is seeking an organized and culturally sensitive intern to join its dynamic team either part-time or full-time in its Austin office. Social Adjustment Services (SAS) works with refugees and asylees who have been in the U.S. for an extended amount of time in helping them find and obtain benefits. It is a great opportunity for anyone interested in working with foreign populations or navigating the benefits system in the US. This position supports and works closely with the SAS Supervisor and other SAS Case Workers. This internship can be used for credit.
-Enjoy working as a team member as well as independently
-Openness to take on projects as they arise
-Willingness to speaking to large groups of clients
-Must be able to dedicate at least 15 hours a week to the position
-Spanish speakers are strongly encouraged to apply.
-Fluency in Spanish, Arabic, Nepali, or Tigrinya is a plus. Although, language skill is not a requirement.

Fall Internships with Interfaith Action of Central Texas

iACT is currently seeking new interns for the fall! Positions are open with both Hands on Housing and iACT for Refugees. If you or anybody you know is interested, please don’t hesitate to call or email.

Hands on Housing Internship:

Client Services Intern, Fall 2015

This position is perfect for a student hoping to learn more about a career in social services and/or non-profits. You will, under the supervision of the Hands on Housing Program Coordinator, support client services and assist in case management. The ideal applicant will be hardworking, independent, and possess strong communication, organization and time-management skills. Previous experience in client services and bilingual Spanish-English are both preferred, but not required.  It is required that any applicant be willing to commit to a full four month internship.

Fall Schedule: Late August-Early December, 10-15 hours/week

iACT for Refugees Internship:

Refugee Services Intern, Fall 2015

A fall intern is needed to implement a new mentoring program for refugee youths for an average of 10 to 15 hours a week. The responsibilities include assisting in matching  mentors with refugee youths, facilitating meetings with the help of language interpreters and organizing a reporting system for mentors to follow.  Most of the work needs to be done afternoons, evenings and some weekends.Candidate must be exceptionally organized, be able to work independently, have good people skills and is able to be flexible and creative under changing conditions. Cultural competency and understanding are necessary.This is an opportunity to work with newly arrived refugees from numerous countries around the world and to make a difference in the lives of teenagers with language and cultural barriers helping them to finish high school as a first step to successful lives.

Internship at Alhambra US Chamber of Commerce

The Alhambra US Chamber of Commerce is seeking motivated, creative and personable interns to work with our Austin-based 501(c)(6) entity involved with promoting international education, business and marketing focused on interaction between the United States and other nations.

Internships are available in the spring, summer and fall semesters.

Description:

Interns provide the following support to Alhambra staff members:

  • Help with social media and website updates
  • International education and business research
  • Drafting and proofing correspondence
  • Digital marketing content creation
  • Event planning
  • Arranging for domestic and international travel
  • Calendar management
  • Organizing files
  • General administrative support (as needed)

Qualifications:

Successful intern candidates are typically:

  • In the process of obtaining a degree (ideally in marketing, business, advertising, graphic design, international relations, political science, communications, journalism or a related discipline, but others will be considered)
  • Articulate, able to express themselves and have a pleasing phone manner
  • Familiar with MS Office Applications (Word, PowerPoint and Excel)
  • Dependable, self-reliant, motivated self-starters
  • Strong research skills and focus to detail

Special consideration will be given to applicants with one or more of the following skills/ aptitudes:

  • Graphic design
  • Previous political, economic, or business research experience
  • HTML, web design, and web editing experience
  • Web optimization experience
  • Excellent phone and communication skills
  • Sales and marketing experience
