About DSHS

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has been restructured to sharpen our focus on public health. Our job is to promote and protect the health of people, and the communities where they live, learn, work, worship, and play. We understand no single entity working by itself can improve the health of all across Texas. We must all work together to create a better system that includes prevention, intervention, and effective partnerships.

Why Intern with DSHS?

DSHS internships provide students hands-on experience working on real world public health projects that benefit Texans. DSHS has hosted interns across the agency in areas ranging from epidemiology, data analysis, communications, nursing and more.

Along with the intern project and day-to-day work, DSHS provides additional educational and networking opportunities to expose students to the varied work of DSHS as well as the many career paths in public health. Multiple interns have gone on to full-time staff roles at the agency.

DSHS Internships

Maternal and Child Health Nutrition Intern

The DSHS Maternal and Child Health Unit (MCHU) has identified the need to improve nutrition across the life course across the state of Texas. The chosen strategy to meet this need is to assist providers, state and community partners, and regional staff’s obesity prevention efforts by providing obesity prevention information and resources that support the child, adolescent, and children with special health care needs (CSHCN) population. An intern would assist in this initiative though the creation of educational resources targeted to families, community partners, and state regional staff across the state of Texas. Upon completion of the internship, the student will be able to: 1. Describe the organization, administration, and program activities of the MCHU and the Child and Adolescent Health Branch, 2. Report on the role of the state health department and partners in creating/disseminating a statewide nutrition education toolkit initiative, and 3. Research and interpret evidence-based prevention strategies on obesity prevention and reduction as well as nutrition education. See our online posting for more details!

EMS/Trauma Systems – Medical Advisory Board Project Intern

The purpose of this internship is to advance the development of the Medical Advisory Board (MAB) Program under the EMS/Trauma Systems (EMS/TS). The MAB Program at DSHS provides opinions on the ability of a license holder to operate a motor vehicle safely or to exercise sound judgement on the proper use and storage of a handgun based on the requests submitted by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) of the State of Texas. The assigned intern(s) will work under the supervision of the EMS/TS Section and the MAB to develop and evaluate the program. The intern will assist with the continued development of the MAB guidelines utilized by staff and the physicians of the MAB. Public Health Workforce Development Intern

The Center for Public Health Policy and Practice intern will work with the Office of Practice and Learning and the Office of Public Health Policy and Practice to research public health training and create content for a Public Health Workforce Training Website. The intern will have the opportunity to gain skills in the following areas:

policy development/program planning
communication
public health science
systems thinking
health equity

Digital Health Communications Intern

Looking for intern with strong digital communications skills, e.g. social media, design, writing, design, and/or video, to join our small but mighty communications team. This position will assist with management of agency Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube pages, and related health messaging strategies. Position will also have opportunity to work on myriad health promotion and behavior change campaigns, e.g. adolescent vaping, obesity, chronic disease, etc. See our online posting for more details!

Data Analytics Intern

Analyze financial information submitted by Grantees during fiscal compliance reviews. Work with data analytics software to develop standard testing procedures to identify areas of risk. Summarize and present data in tables & graphs for management use. See our online posting for more details!

Public Health Finance Intern

This internship opportunity is aimed at providing finance/business majors an opportunity to analyze financial data related to public health entities across the state. Working with data analytics software, the intern will develop a report that outlines public health finance trends from FY2000 to FY2020. See our online posting for more details!

Internship with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Texas – Summer & Fall 21

About Us

Keeping families with sick children together and near the care and resources they need.

It’s something we see every day – critically ill or injured children surrounded by their families. And while RMHC CTX may not be able to make the medicine taste better or erase the pain of a much-needed treatment, we can help lessen the burden for thousands of Central Texas families every year. Since we opened our doors in 1985, we have never closed them.

For 35 years, we have supported children and families through our Ronald McDonald House, Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, Happy Wheels Carts and Healing Hearts program.

The Ronald McDonald House and Ronald McDonald Family Rooms are a comforting “home-away-from-home” that keeps families close to their hospitalized children. The Happy Wheels Carts stroll the hospital hallways bringing complimentary items to families waiting by their child’s bedside and the Healing Hearts program supports families that have tragically lost a child.

Position: Development and Communications Intern

Stipend: Unpaid Internship

Dates of Position: 3 months

Time Commitment: 10-12 hours per week; flexible

Job Purpose: Assist the Development and Communications with online and offline communications including social media engagement, collateral development and website maintenance.

Duties:

Assist in marketing communication projects to advance RMHC CTX brand
Assist in managing social media engagement to promote RMHC CTX brand
Update and edit online content on WordPress website
Collaborate with Communications Coordinator on ideas for innovation and creation of new photo and video materials.
Assist Development Team with communications support for special events
Assists with additional responsibilities as requested

Skills and Experience:

Proficient written and verbal communication skills
Proficiency in social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn
Basic knowledge of Adobe Suite including but not limited to Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign
Basic knowledge of WordPress
Preferred knowledge of photography and videography but not required

HealthStart Foundation Internships – Summer 21

Development Intern

RESPONSIBILITIES:

HealthStart seeks a part-time Development intern with highly developed organizational skills, time management, and research skills. Interns work 12-15 hours per week under the supervision of our Program & Communications Manager.

Job responsibilities may include:

Support HealthStart’s Development Committee in identifying prospects that align with HealthStart’s mission
- Research influential groups in the community for collaborative partnerships.
- Research potential clients, inducing school districts, day care centers, afterschool programs, etc.
Draft content to support outreach to prospects
Assist in developing materials that will help HealthStart speak to our competencies in health and science education.
Work with the HealthStart team to develop a strategy for recruiting new school partners.
Assisting with community outreach and other activities that educate and raise HealthStart’s profile
Report progress/findings to HealthStart’s Development Committee when necessary
Other development related tasks as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates for the position must have experience with or a strong interest in public health, health promotion, nonprofit development, or related activity. Video Production Intern

RESPONSIBILITIES:

HealthStart seeks a part-time Video Production intern who’s creative, well-organized, has experience with video production, and wants to make concepts come to life. Interns work 12-15 hours per week under the supervision of our Program & Communications Manager. This experience should be highly transferable to jobs involving videography, advertising, and program development.

Job responsibilities may include:

Film new episodes of our Snack Science Video Series
Create and produce short impact videos and other projects as needed to spread HealthStart’s mission
Assist HS staff from start to finish on all video-related projects
Use HealthStart’s equipment (ie including ring light, green screen, etc.) and/or your own to produce videos with a high production value
Basic video editing on Adobe Premiere
Work with HS to develop video concepts and finalize video edits to ensure proper conveyance of HealthStart lessons
Work with HS staff and other interns on script development
Other video production-related tasks as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates for the position must have experience with or a strong interest in filming video editing, program development, nonprofit development, or related activity. A strong interest in health and wellness or early childhood education is preferred. Must be familiar with basic computer operations including MS WORD, EXCEL, and the Internet.

In addition, candidates should have some or all of the following skills:

Experience with video animation and Adobe After Effects software – preferred but not required
Experience filming with iPhone, green screen, and other related equipment
Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (1-2 years+) – preferred but not required

RESPONSIBILITIES:

HealthStart is currently seeking a part-time Grant Development Intern with highly developed organizational skills, attention to detail, and strong research skills. Interns work 12-15 hours per week under the supervision of our Program & Communications Manager.

Job Responsibilities may include

Seeking out new grant funding opportunities that align with HealthStart’s mission
Performing in-depth research into grant-making organizations and requirements to prioritize and evaluate prospects for grants
Researching compelling and current studies that support individual granting projects and HealthStart’s work
Assist in writing and editing high-quality grant proposals in accordance with each grantmaker’s preferences and requirements
Update our grant information for each HealthStart program/initiative to enable an easy grant submission process at the local, state, and federal levels.
Other grant development related tasks as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates for the position should have a strong interest in or prior experience with creative writing, journalism, fund development or related activity. Knowledge of the grant process is a plus. A strong interest in health and wellness or early childhood education is preferred. Work with HealthStart staff to develop program materials for implementation including lesson guides, standards posters, and activity instructions
Monitor and update educational standard alignment as needed
Assist in script development for Snack Science Video Series
Attend HealthStart’s Programming Committee as needed

HealthStart seeks a part-time Digital Marketing Strategist Intern with highly developed organizational skills, time management, and creative talents. Interns work 12-15 hours per week under the supervision of our Program & Communications Manager.

You will be part of a team shaping HealthStart’s message through social media and marketing campaigns designed to inform and attract new supporters, and related tasks. All of these experiences should be highly transferable to a professional work environment.

Job responsibilities may include:

Working with HealthStart staff to develop a strategy to maximize the impact of our social media and other digital marketing campaigns.
Create original marketing content, blog posts, and social media posts that engage audiences across multiple channels (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)
Identify real-time trends & translate to social media opportunities.
Prospecting & interacting with social media accounts to raise HealthStart’s profile and brand awareness
Create monthly marketing reports using Google and HootSuite analytics
Review online content to ensure SEO maximization through the use of keywords, #tags, and other strategies
Work directly with HealthStart’s Marketing Committee as needed
