Summer 2020 Internship Opportunities with One Good Turn

One Good Turn Internship Opportunities

One Good Turn is currently seeking two interns to support our Programs Director and Executive Director with (1) researching funding partners and writing grant applications and (2) researching, writing, and creating a medical education curriculum for health workers in developing countries. These internships offers the opportunity to gain valuable professional experience while supporting a local non-profit that is truly changing lives.

About One Good Turn:

One Good Turn (OGT) is a global health education nonprofit based in Austin, TX. Our mission is to provide practical medical education and culturally sensitive medical care to neglected communities worldwide. One Good Turn focuses on teaching: we create simple medical education and training protocols developed for community health providers who may have little to no formal training. Important Information:

Application Deadline: Friday March 20, 2020

These internships are unpaid but will provide valuable professional experience and an incredible learning opportunity for anyone interested in working in the global health or nonprofit industries. Additionally, depending on schedules and ability to travel, interns may have the opportunity to accompany the One Good Turn team on medical education projects in the future. Potential project locations include countries like Kenya, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, and more.

These internships are for the Summer 2020 semester but could continue into the fall/spring should the working relationship prove valuable to all parties. A commitment minimum of 5 hours per week is required but could increase to 10 hours or more per week, time permitting. Interns are welcome to begin working with OGT before summer, schedules permitting.

Grant Writing and Research Internship

What you will learn:

  • How to utilize foundation databases (Foundation Direct Online and others)
  • How to write compelling content
  • An overview of the global health industry landscape
  • How to manage deadlines and work collaboratively

What you will do (in collaboration with the ED and Programs Director):

  • Write and compile materials required for grant applications
  • Research funders working in areas of global health to determine process, deadlines and collateral needed for applications
  • Create a grant deadline calendar for new applications and compliance reporting
  • Compile compliance reporting for submission on a timely basis

The ideal candidate:

  • Is currently enrolled in research and/or writing-intensive educational programs
    • Note: Other academic programs will also be considered, all applicants welcome
  • Is passionate about global health, education, and sustainable development
  • Is available for 5 to 10+ hours weekly for the entire Summer 2020 semester
  • Is self motivated, driven, creative, and a quick learner
  • Is flexible and willing to collaborate remotely and in a shared work environment
  • Demonstrates an ability to write compelling content
  • Has their own laptop/computer

Medical Curriculum Research and Development Internship

What you will learn:

  • How to create and structure a comprehensive medical education curriculum designed for health workers with little to no formal training
  • About common medical conditions in developing countries in the tropical belt
  • How to create educational content that is easily understood across cultures and languages
  • How to create compelling and easy-to-understand infographics
  • How to use medical research databases
  • An overview of the global health industry landscape
  • How to manage deadlines and work collaboratively

What you will do (in collaboration with the ED and Programs Director):

  • Research best practices for curriculum development and design
  • Establish a project timeline and benchmarks
  • Use medical research databases to compile diagnosis and treatment information
  • Create medical educational materials including brochures, presentations, charts/ infographics, and other documents

The ideal candidate:

  • Is currently enrolled (or has demonstrated interest/experience) in one or more of the following fields: education/curriculum development, pre-med/biology, research and/or writing-intensive programs
    • Note: Other academic programs will also be considered, all applicants welcome
  • Is passionate about global health, education, and sustainable development

Job Title: Youth Civic Education and Engagement Intern (20 hrs/wk)

Stipend: $450 summer, $750 fall/spring if funds available.

Job Description: The internship is based in Austin and provides general support for the CDF-TX Youth Civic Education and Engagement initiative. The intern works 20 hours/week supporting both our policy and organizing work to increase youth civic education and engagement. The youth civic engagement intern provides substantive policy research and reports and monitors legislative committees and the State Board of Education on improving youth civic engagement and education in Texas. Additionally, the intern assists with outreach to partners and school districts on behalf of the Texas Civic Education Roundtable to support the prioritization of culturally sustaining civic education in Texas’ public school classrooms. The intern also supports outreach to young people statewide to support our high school voter registration campaign, as well as provides critical support in developing training curriculums to support young people’s knowledge of and engagement with state legislative and local civic processes.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Plans civic engagement opportunities with and for youth
  • Policy research, briefs and training material
  • Conducts research on public policy, media trends and other subjects as needed
  • Assists in the development and execution of special projects
  • Assist in maintaining CDF’s social media platforms

Job Description: The internship is based in Austin and provides general support for the CDF-TX Immigration Department. The intern works 10 hours/week, and provides substantive research, compiles reports, monitors immigration news and helps with the execution of advocacy-related activities, including story collection, public education, special event planning, newsletters, and social media work.

 Primary Responsibilities:

  • Policy research, briefs and training material
  • Compiles bi-monthly immigration newsletters
  • Conducts research on immigration policy, media trends, and other subjects as needed
  • Assists in the development and execution of special projects
  • Perform other division, department, and organization-wide special projects as needed and assigned

Job Title: Communications/Policy Intern (20 hrs/wk)

Job Description: The internship is based in Austin and provides social media and communications support for the CDF-TX Policy Department. The intern works 20 hours/week, and will contribute to social media campaigns to promote the research, reports, legislative issues and advocacy-related activities of the organization. CDF-TX organizes advocate training/recruitment, story collection, public education, legislator visits, legislative briefings, and public policy events.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Supports CDF’s social media platforms
  • Monitors blogs and social media accounts of allied groups to develop basic content knowledge about current policy issues related to health care and children’s health
  • With supervision, plans, prepares, and executes social media campaigns (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) focused on current public policy issues and other subjects as needed
  • Organizes weekly and monthly content calendars
  • Assists in the development and execution of special projects and events
  • Performs other division, department, and organization-wide special projects as needed and assigned

Job Requirements:

  • Experience using social media for advocacy efforts, volunteer or paid
  • Visual design skills, video skills a plus

Research Assistant Positions with the Gender Health Equity Lab

The Gender Health Equity Lab is looking for several research assistants.

GHEL Mission: To reduce health disparities among vulnerable individuals who experience structural and syndemic factors that increase HIV/STI risk.


Job Description: Coder

Learning Objectives:

  • Will learn how to code qualitative interviews
  • Will learn how to discuss coding discrepancies with other coders
  • Will become familiar with NVivo software

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Clean and redact participant interviews
  • Code interviews qualitatively, both independently and in group settings
  • Enter coded data into NVivo, a qualitative coding software
  • *Note interviews often contain sensitive material which may be upsetting to some people

Required Qualifications:

  • Second-year undergraduate student or higher
  • Human Subjects CITI Training Certification
  • Availability to meet with other coders on a biweekly basis
  • Attend at least 50% of biweekly lab meetings per semester

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Works well in team settings
  • Self-motivated

Expectations

  • Transcripts must always remain in the coder’s possession as they are extremely confidential
  • Once transcripts are coded they must be returned to the GHEL and locked in a filing cabinet
  • Transcripts must be entered into NVivo in the GHEL
  • Once transcripts are entered into NVivo bring them to BEL 718 to be shredded
  • At least one transcript coded every 2 weeks
    • Check in with Heran after each transcript is coded
    • Enter which step of coding stage into Master Task List
    • Questions or falling behind—let Project Coordinator (Heran) know immediately to help or find another coder to help—getting coding done is more important
    • If coding is continually late, you will only be able to code while present in the lab

Job Description: Data Entry

Learning Objectives:

  • Will become familiar with REDCap
  • Will learn the difference between and importance of both qualitative and quantitative data

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Enter participant data into REDCap
  • Convert qualitative participant data into quantitative data
  • Enter quantified data into Excel

Required Qualifications:

  • Second-year undergraduate student or higher
  • Human Subjects CITI Training Certification
  • Attend at least 50% of biweekly lab meetings per semester

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong reading comprehension skills

  • Data entry must occur in GHEL
  • Data entry from interview must occur within 2 business days after interview

Job Description: Recruiter

Learning Objectives:

  • Will become familiar with local community organizations who serve the study’s target population
  • Will enhance communication skills through networking with communication organizations

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Post and distribute flyers around the community and in organizations
  • Develop relationships with community organizations on the phone or in-person
  • Find new appropriate areas or organizations to recruit participants

Required Qualifications:

  • Second-year undergraduate student or higher
  • Human Subjects CITI Training Certification
  • Attend at least 50% of biweekly lab meetings per semester
  • Transportation

  • Recruiter must go into the field once a week and to different locations each time
  • Keep track of destinations for travel reimbursement (must always start and end at UT regardless of where you actually start and end)

Job Description: Researcher

Learning Objectives:

  • Will learn to conduct comprehensive literature searchers
  • Will learn how to use NIH REPORTeR
  • Will become familiar with information needed to develop grants

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Conduct literature reviews on topics
  • Search for scientific measures
  • Search for current studies through current literature or NIH REPORTeR
  • Contact local organizations

Required Qualifications:

  • Second-year undergraduate student or higher
  • Human Subjects CITI Training Certification
  • Attend at least 50% of biweekly lab meetings per semester

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong reading comprehension skills
  • Prior research experience
  • Works well in team settings
  • Self-motivated

Expectations

  • Research is due 1 week from day assigned unless otherwise specified
  • Even if you are not done, check in 1 week after assigned to provide update with your status
    • Questions or falling behind—let Project Coordinator (Heran) or Dr. Nydegger know immediately in order to help or ask another researcher to provide assistance to ensure the task is completed
    • If research tasks are continually left unfinished after assigned, you will be only be given research tasks while present in the lab

Job Description: Interview Assistant

Learning Objectives:

  • Will learn how to conduct qualitative interviews
  • Will learn the process prior to and after conducting qualitative interviews

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Prepare interview bag with appropriate materials
  • Attend interviews, taking notes of observations
  • Compile materials from interview to prepare for transcription and data entry

Required Qualifications:

  • Second-year undergraduate student or higher
  • Human Subjects CITI Training Certification
  • Attend at least 50% of biweekly lab meetings per semester

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Works well in team settings
  • Self-motivated
  • Transportation preferred but not required

Expectations

  • Must arrive at interview location at least 15 minutes prior to interview start time (continual tardiness will lead to losing this opportunity)
  • Must dress appropriately which means casual but no short shorts or shirts that are short, or exposing in any way. Jeans, long jean shorts, other pants (except dress pants), and casual shirts are acceptable. Do not overdress as this gives off a power dynamic that can lead to participants closing up.
  • Make sure to double check that the bag and folders have ALL materials needed, do not assume the interview assistant before you did everything. Ensure the recorders have enough battery life.
