Young Invincibles and the Cognosante Foundation are hosting a fellowship program that will provide students with the opportunity to learn a range of skills from policy research, organizing and advocacy, to communications strategies, to business skills. Four fellows will be chosen to participate in our DC program, two in Chicago, and two in Houston. This is the second year of the program.
Program Description
Young Invincibles is seeking interested candidates to join our summer fellowship program, YI Scholars, for a professional and educational experience in Washington, DC, Chicago, and Houston. YI Scholars will have the opportunity to learn leadership and professional skills, be trained on the issue areas that Young Invincibles advocates for, explore both the non-profit and business sector and participate in educational activities throughout DC, Chicago, and Houston. Each YI Scholar will get a chance to work across the organization in policy and research, communications, organizing or YI’s consulting arm, YI Advisors. In addition, YI Scholars will become a part of a YI Alumni Network to ensure that they continue to engage with other young leaders as they begin their careers. This position is full-time, temporary for 10 weeks (June 6 – August 12), and pays a stipend of $5,000. The program also covers the cost of a round-trip plane ticket for the fellow to travel to DC, Chicago, or Houston and back home. Chicago and Houston fellows will be traveling to DC twice during the fellowship to meet with DC staff and the Cognosante foundation and participate in other DC activities. Preference will be given to first-generation college students.
Qualifications
• Be a current undergraduate student (18 years or older) enrolled in a two- or four-year institution within the United States. Graduating students may apply (Fall 2015, Spring and Summer 2016).
• Actively participate in the community and/or campus.
• Demonstrate leadership skills through campus involvement, community involvement and/or through job experience.
• Be creative, entrepreneurial, energetic, and possessing great attitude.
• Show willingness to work both independently and alongside coworkers and partners.
• Have the ability and willingness to work in a fast-paced work environment and start-up atmosphere.
• Have the ability to work in a professional environment and show maturity in the workplace.
• Possess excellent communications and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with a variety of people.
• Possess excellent writing skills.
• Have a passion for Young Invincibles’ mission.
• The selection committee will be deliberate in ensuring preference is given to students who are first-generation college attendees and/or who are from underrepresented communities (low-income, communities of color, immigrants.)

SUMMER RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES (SROH) AT HARVARD

Summer Research Opportunities at Harvard is a summer program offered for currently enrolled undergraduates from across the country who are considering pursuing a PhD in the humanities, social sciences, or life/physical sciences; who have already had at least one summer (or equivalent term-time) of research experience; and who have taken at least one upper-level course in their field of study. Areas of study: Economics, Education, Government, History, Law, Psychology, Public Policy, Religion, Social Policy, Sociology, and Religion.
ACTIVITIES
• Placement in faculty research groups in Cambridge spanning fields in the life and physical sciences, humanities, and social sciences.
• Weekly faculty lectures from departments in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) divisions, held jointly with students enrolled in the Harvard summer research programs.
• Weekly group meeting discussions on student research projects and a range of career and professional development topics.
• Participation in the Leadership Alliance National Symposium. Visiting student status includes housing with residential proctor; library privileges; athletics privileges; access to summer activities such as field trips, music, etc.
ELIGIBILITY
• Applicants must currently be enrolled full-time in an accredited public or private college or university in the United States or its territories, as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
• All applicants must be in good academic standing with a GPA of 3.0 or better.
• Demonstrate a committed interest to pursue graduate study toward a PhD or MD-PhD.
• Have completed at least two semesters and have at least one semester remaining of their undergraduate education by the start of the summer program.
• Be a US citizen or have permanent resident status at the time of application.
FUNDING
Students in the program will live in Harvard-affiliated housing. The program will provide all research and course-related expenses, room, travel to and from the program, and typically, a stipend of $3,500 and a food allowance of $1500.

SUMMER RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM (SROP) AT NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY

The Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) is an eight-week competitive research experience at Northwestern University for sophomores and juniors from colleges and universities across the United States. All fields of research at Northwestern are open to SROP participants including the social sciences and humanities, physical sciences, chemical and biological sciences, technology, math and engineering fields.

ELIGIBILITY
• Be a current sophomore or junior.

FUNDING

UM-SMART PROGRAM
Summer at Michigan for Undergraduate Research Training

Are you an undergraduate who might be interested in a physician-scientist career path?
The UM-SMART program can offer both biomedical research experience and exposure to clinical medicine at the highly ranked University of Michigan Health System. Participating in UM-SMART may help you decide if this is the right career for you and could enhance your competitiveness when applying to M.D./Ph.D. programs.
ACTIVITIES
• Perform full-time research in a U-M faculty laboratory.
• Attend weekly luncheon research presentations by U-M faculty.
• Give short presentations of summer accomplishments at the conclusion of the program.
• Gain clinical exposure by shadowing U-M physicians.
• Attend three-day annual MSTP retreat on Higgins Lake.
• Prepare for the MCAT with formal instruction over an eight-week period during the program.
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for UM-SMART, applicants must come from an educational, cultural or geographic background that is underrepresented in the sciences OR have experienced financial hardship as a result of family economic circumstances OR have a physical or mental disability that substantially limits one or more major life activities. FUNDING
A stipend of $4,400 and university housing will be provided. The program will cover transportation costs to and from Ann Arbor, up to $200. Students are responsible for providing their own meals throughout the program.
