CHLI Global Leaders Program – DUE FRIDAY, December 9, 2016

A 15 week internship program working in Congressional and corporate offices in Washington D.C. Students also earn academic credit hours from the George Washington University. Students will work on project-based programs that provide hands-on experience and also strengthen their understanding of Public Policy.  Eligibility

  • Applicants must be U.S. Citizens or Legal Permanent Residents
  • Participants must be enrolled in a four-year university and are either in their Junior of Senior year of their undergraduate studies, or students must be a recent graduate. ( Within one year of the start of the program)
  • Strong interest in the U.S. Hispanic and Portuguese Community

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must be Juniors, Senior, or within one (1) calendar year of graduation
  • Applicants must be enrolled or recently graduated from a 4-year college or university
  • Applicants must be fully available for program dates and complete the entire semester
  • Preference given to applicants of Hispanic, Latino, and/or Portuguese decent

Application Instructions

You must complete the online application provided below, supporting documents must be submitted by December 9, 2016; There are no exceptions.

  2. Cover letter:
    Submit a one-page cover letter describing what you hope to gain from the program
  3. Unofficial Transcripts:
    Must include all semesters for which grades have been awarded at all colleges or universities attended.
  4. Two letters of recommendation: 
    From a professor or an employer are required. Letters must be included with your supporting documents.
  5. Resume:
    Must include educational and employment background as well as extracurricular activities and special awards/honors.
  6. Personal statement:
    In approximately 800 words describe your family, work, educational and community experience that led you to apply to the CHLI Global Leaders Program. How do these experiences relate to your long-term goals? How will you continue your leadership within your community? What are your greatest strengths? And what are areas you would like to improve?
  7. Legislative analysis:
    In approximately 800 words identify a bill introduced in Congress (House or Senate) during the most recent session and analyze the pros and cons of the legislation. State and explain your position, provide policy recommendations and identify their impact on the Hispanic and/or Portuguese community. Follow MLA format, and cite your sources. Plagiarism will result in dismissal of the application. We strongly recommend writing your analysis on one of the following topics:

    • Energy and Environment
    • Education
    • Technology
    • Commerce

Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty Spring 2017 Internship

Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty seeks Spring 2017 Advocacy Intern

The Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (TCADP) is the only professionally staffed, statewide grassroots advocacy organization dedicated solely to ending the death penalty in Texas. We seek to shift the political climate on the issue and decrease use of the death penalty in Texas. Our approach includes strategic communications, engagement of “unusual voices,” public education and outreach, and support of litigation strategies.

TCADP’s Spring 2017 Advocacy Intern will assist with legislative research, community outreach and public education programs, strategic communications, and administrative support. They will interact with the Executive Director and Communications Coordinator, as well as other volunteers, TCADP Board Members, and community partners.

Responsibilities:

• Support public education and outreach programs, including events featuring death row

exonorees and other individuals with personal experience with the Texas death penalty

system

• Research and writing assignments related to TCADP’s blog and monthly newsletter

• Assistance with the 85th Texas Legislature, including monitoring bills, supporting

TCADP’s Lobby Corps members, and preparing for Faith Leader Advocacy Day on the

Death Penalty at the State Capitol

• Development of educational materials for print and/or online publication

• Logistical support for the TCADP 2017 Annual Conference, which will take place on

February 18, 2017 in Austin

• Administrative support, including data entry, resource inventory, and social media

updates

Desired skills/experience:

• Exceptional communication and writing skills (ability to speak and write Spanish is a

plus)

• Experience with grassroots/student organizing and community outreach

• Experience with online communication/social networking tools (Facebook, blogs,

Twitter, Instagram, etc.)

• Proven ability to work independently

• Interest in working with a non-profit advocacy organization

• Personal commitment to the abolition of the death penalty

All work will be performed in our South Austin office and will be supervised by TCADP’s

Executive Director and Communications Coordinator. This is an unpaid position requiring a minimum commitment of 10 hours/week.

Department of State Health Services Internship Program

Most internships at DSHS are geared for graduate students, although depending on the need and student interest, undergraduate students are also welcome to apply. To view available internships go to: Internship Opportunities (Updated Daily).

During the internship, students will have the opportunity to conduct goal-oriented, semester-long policy, program, and/or research projects for their academic requirements in a practice setting, as well as contribute to DSHS’s mission.  Interns are supervised by public health and behavioral scientists and practitioners. In addition to gaining program, policy and/or research experience, interns will gain communication skills by preparing both written and oral presentations about their completed projects.

Interns are selected based on merit via a competitive process without regard to race, color, religion, or gender. Completed applications will be reviewed, and students will be interviewed in person or by telephone. Interns must provide their own housing, and transportation to the internship site. Interns are also responsible for obtaining necessary vaccinations. Depending on the type of internship, some internships require criminal background checks and verifications from the Nurse Aide Registry and Employee Misconduct Registry.

Student performance is evaluated based on academic requirements and expected internship outcomes.  Evaluation is discussed upon acceptance to the internship.

DSHS Internship Application Requirements

To compete for a DSHS internship, the student must submit:

  1. Completed DSHS Internship Application.
  2. Copy of resume.
  3. Two letters of recommendation from academic faculty. One recommendation should be from a former or current faculty. The second could be from an academic advisor, an employment supervisor, a second faculty member, or a sponsor of a student organization in which you participate (d).
  4. Letter of Interest that explains why you are best qualified for the internship, describes relevant experience, and explains how the internship will further academic and/or professional goals.
