Fall Internship at Water to Thrive

Duration of Internship: Now-Dec 2014 (Dates flexible)

Location: Austin, Texas

Areas of Focus: Marketing and Outreach

Hours Per Week: 10-20hrs per week

POSITION OVERVIEW

 About Water to Thrive: Water to Thrive is a faith-based nonprofit dedicated to the mission of bringing safe, clean water to communities in rural Africa.  In the past 6 years, over 500 wells have been built, providing the gift of clean water to more than 250,000 people in East Africa.

Water To Thrive (W2T) is looking for an energetic, highly motivated Marketing and Outreach intern to work in our in Austin, Texas office.

This position requires researching and developing strategies for supporters, organizations, and media (local and national) to promote Water To Thrive and build sustainable engagement across the country.

Candidates should have strong written communication skills as well as in-depth knowledge of social media channels including, but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Vimeo.  Public relations experience is preferred.

The Marketing and Outreach Intern will gain valuable experience working with various people in both the non-profit and private sector all while learning about the internal operations of growing, passionate non-profit organization.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

  • Updating social media channels
  • Assist with compiling outreach contact lists and send press releases
  • Help organize donor information and profiles
  • Research creative and innovative ideas to promote W2T and our initiatives
  • Reflect W2T’S voice and tone in all communications (possibly presentations in community and through webinars)
  • Work across departments to assist, as needed

 QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will:

  • Hold minimum junior-level college/university standing with practical training and experience in Communications, Marketing, PR, or Journalism
  • Be a self-starter who is able to take responsibility for projects and work independently
  • Have excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Be detail-oriented, a problem solver, an efficient multi-tasker and extremely organized
  • Be devoted to and believe in the vision and mission of W2T
  • Have a strong knowledge of computer and word processing applications
  • Have a working knowledge of using social media tools for business
  • Have a working knowledge of emerging technology platforms
  • Have an assertive, can do attitude and be able to work independently as well as be a team player
  • Flexibility in schedule
  • Previous marketing experience and background a plus
  • Access to a laptop computer and a smartphone device
  • Must have reliable transportation

There may be occasional opportunities for work-related travel.

Fast Approaching Deadline: USAID Virtual Internship

VSFS is designed to engage civil society in the work of the government by harnessing the expertise and digital excellence of U.S. citizen students. Since 2009, 1,205 eInterns have expanded the reach of U.S. government efforts around the world.  There are 323 projects this year from:

  • Army Research Laboratory Library
  • U.S. Department of the Interior
  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
  • U.S. Department of Education – Federal Student Aid

Program Details

Every applicant gets to choose three projects of interest.  During the interview process in August, supervisors select the eIntern who is the best fit.  Selected students are expected to work virtually an average of ten hours per week on VSFS eInternship projects, which run from September through May. Some students have received course credit for their VSFS internships through their own efforts with their schools.

Summer Internships with Innovations for Peace and Development and Development Gateway: Deadline April 18th

Development Gateway, a Washington D.C. based non-profit organization working on international aid management, and Innovations for Peace and Development (IPD), a research consortium at UT, are seeking part- and full-time summer interns to provide data analysis support on an interdisciplinary project to better track development assistance in partnership with USAID.

Under the direction of Drs. Michael Findley (UT Government Department) and Kate Weaver (LBJ School of Public Affairs), student interns will geo-reference and categorize project-level data provided by aid donor governments. This summer, the project will primarily be focused on geocoding information for Honduras and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Training in GIS systems and coding methodologies will be provided.

Interns will also have the opportunity to learn tools for analyzing foreign aid data in conjunction with a variety of development outcomes including food security, health, climate change, democratization, and conflict. They will also undertake structured research projects under these topics.

Qualified candidates must be current undergraduate or graduate students and should demonstrate interest in geospatial systems, international development, economics, political science or related fields. French and Spanish speakers are highly encouraged to apply as well.

Internships will begin on May 26th, with an orientation week. We ask for a minimum commitment of 8 weeks, with an official ending date of August 15th. These positions are not paid, but successful interns will have the possibility of a continued position with the Innovation for Peace and Development research team in the fall semester. Interns are expected to commit between 20 and 40 hours per week in the summer.
