Anti-Defamation League is looking for Spring Interns

Are you an Austin college student looking for a meaningful work experience?

We’re looking for spring interns for each of the following departments: Education, Development, and Civil Rights.

PRIMARY FUNCTION Under direct supervision, participate in day-to-day operations and projects within the Division/Department/Regional Office in order to learn real-world transferable skills and gain work experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Primary: Shadow the respective manager, and designated colleague(s), to gain real-world work experience in, and a greater understanding of, the respective field of interest. Participate in Division/Department/Regional Office meetings to gain a better understanding of the mission of ADL and familiarity with community service work. Read print and electronic media on topics connected to the ADL mission. Under direct supervision, conduct research, prepare memos and letters, and draft meeting minutes in order to gain experience in the implementation of community service work. Gain a better understanding of field of interest by participating in special projects in the fields of development, civil rights, international affairs, education, community service, management, or other areas of interest.

Secondary: Provide clerical assistance as needed.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.

QUALIFICATIONS

1.       Skills

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Research skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate commitment to ADL’s mission.
  • Experience in Microsoft Word.

2.       Work Experience:

  • Prior volunteer or work experience helpful.

3.       Education:

  • High School student, matriculated college student, or recent High School or college graduate.

Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Life Seeks Spring 2014 Intern

Undergraduate Outreach and Research Intern
Spring 2014

The Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Life (www.annettestrauss.org), an organized research unit at The University of Texas at Austin, seeks an unpaid 10-15 hr./week undergraduate outreach and research intern. The Annette Strauss Institute aims to understand and overcome the obstacles to civic engagement through research, education, training, and youth engagement.  The intern will help to support the Institute’s outreach programming including marketing assistance, aiding with events and trainings, and other administrative support.

Position Available: Undergraduate Outreach and Research Intern with the Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Life
Hours/week: 10-15 hrs./week
Period of Appointment: January 13, 2014- May 2, 2014 with the possibility of continuation through Fall 2014
Location: CMA 7.146

Duties:

  1. Program/Educational Outreach Coordination. Support the Institute’s outreach initiatives including K-12 Outreach, Institute communication, and Speak Up! Speak Out!;
  2. Database Management. Expand and maintain contacts database;
  3. Administrative Assistance. Travel planning, reporting, and administration.
  4. Marketing and Communication. Website management and updates.  Create marketing lists for the Texas Civic Health Index, Speak Up! Speak Out!, professional development, teacher partnerships, and advertising.  Support with drafting and producing social media content.
  5. Event Planning. Assist with conference planning and event preparation; and
  6. Projects and Research.  Assist the Director, staff, and graduate research assistant(s), on various projects and/or research of the Institute, as needed and directed.

Qualifications:
Outstanding written and verbal communications skills, including writing to deadline and for a variety of audiences.
An articulated belief in the Strauss Institute mission and an interest in civic life.
Applicants must be personable, well-organized, resourceful and persistent.
Previous work in an educational, political, or non-profit setting is a plus.

Compensation: This position is unpaid but the selected student can register to take this internship for course credit, if permissible by your degree program.

Legislative Research Internship with Project Vote Smart

Project Vote Smart’s Legislative Research Internship Program at the University of Texas at Austin provides a unique lesson in the study of American and state politics. Interns will research bills and compile legislators’ voting records while gaining experience in political research, the U.S. political system, and the legislative process. Project Vote Smart is an independent, nonpartisan source of accurate information about candidates, elected officials, and legislation. By expanding access to factual information, Project Vote Smart helps citizens defend themselves from the negative rhetoric and misrepresentation that is characteristic of present-day political campaigns.

Location

The Legislative Research Department of Project Vote Smart is located at the University of Texas at Austin inside the Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Life (2504 A Whitis Ave, R2000, Austin, TX 78712).

Job Description

Interns will monitor local media in all 50 states, as well as the national media, in order to identify critical pieces of legislation that are important to residents in each state. Once bills have been selected for inclusion on the Project’s website, interns will compile legislators’ voting records for publication.  Interns will also read and summarize each bill in order to provide voters with a clear and concise synopsis of the legislation.  Other projects may be assigned, such as researching candidate biographies, compiling interest group ratings, or tracking the progress of ballot measures and initiatives.  All interns perform substantive and meaningful work and will never be asked to answer the phone or make coffee.  By the end of the semester, interns will have gained valuable experience conducting legislative research, as well as in-depth knowledge of important political issues and how such issues have been addressed by policymakers.  The internship is ideal for those considering law school, or who are interested in pursuing a career in a policy-related field.

The minimum time commitment is 10 hours per week.  Scheduling is flexible.  Although the internship is unpaid, students may choose to earn course credit for their experience.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Strong desire to learn more about politics, policy, and the legislative process
  • Enthusiasm for Project Vote Smart’s mission
  • Ability to remain nonpartisan
  • Ability to commit to at least 10 hours per week for the entire semester

Preferred:

  • Research experience
  • Prior knowledge of the legislative process
