Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies Research Internship

The Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies, a multidisciplinary institute that integrates several centers and programs devoted to promote interest in the region, is the oldest Latin American Studies program in the United States and one of the best worldwide.
LLILAS has an unpaid internship program designed to provide UT students with the opportunity to gain professional experience by learning about the work of multiple programs within LLILAS or to develop research skills by working with some of our most distinguished Latin Americanist faculty. Our institute is a vibrant and fast-paced environment where students will have the opportunity to interact with foreign students, visiting Latin American professors, government officials, politicians, and private sector representatives.

The internship is open to undergraduate students enrolled in any UT college or school who may be interested in pursuing graduate degrees or working on Latin American issues. Interns must be available to work about 10 hours a week from early September 2012 to the last week of classes of the fall semester (schedules are negotiated with the respective supervisor). We are currently trying to fill positions in several LLILAS programs. Please e-mail all application materials to Paloma Diaz, p.diaz@austin.utexas.edu, between August 1 and September 1, 2013 (we encourage early applications and will begin interviewing applicants as soon as possible).

The application package should include: (1) a résumé indicating language and computer skills; (2) a cover letter stating why you are interested in the position or positions (including research topics or disciplines of interest); (3) information about your fall schedule and available hours; and (4) the name and contact information of at least two UT faculty members or previous employers who are willing to provide us with references. (Note: The LLILAS Research Internship also requires a copy of your transcript.)

Fall Internship with Texas After Violence Project

Texas After Violence Project (TAVP) is accepting applications for part-time internships and volunteers for Fall 2013. All interns will contribute to ongoing initiatives in our Storytelling Project, Conversations Project and Culture Project. We are especially seeking interns to assist in the areas of community outreach and media.

TAVP has different tracks for new interns:

  • Media track: Media interns must have specific skills in documentary production and video-making, including video editing and/or videography and an interest in oral history and storytelling. Media interns will learn about the praxis of oral history as social change throughout the semester by working closely with staff on office work/assignments.
  • Oral history track: Oral history interns will focus especially on the creation and management of our oral history interviews. Tasks will include research on ongoing and new cases, identifying and contacting potential narrators, assisting with interview preparation, managing post-interview documents, writing copy for website, and managing narrator database and outreach.
  • Community Outreach track: Interns will contribute to ongoing efforts to develop community programs for our Conversations Project and assist with administrative and programmatic tasks in this area.

All interns will also assist with administrative tasks, social media and event planning.
TAVP also seeks new volunteers on an ongoing basis. Volunteers may work remotely or in the office. Please write to volunteer@texasafterviolence.org if you are interested in volunteering.

Undergraduate Research Fellowships Available – Fall Deadline is 9/17

The Undergraduate Research Fellowship (URF) program provides support for specific scholarly research projects conducted by full-time UT undergraduate students enrolled in any department. These fellowships are intended to cover costs associated with academic research projects proposed and written by student applicants and undertaken with the supervision of a university tenured or tenure-track faculty member, lecturer, senior lecturer or full-time research scientist/engineer.

Undergraduate Research Fellowships are awarded in amounts up to $1,000 in fall and spring. University tenured, tenure-track, non-tenure track faculty members or full-time research staff members may supervise undergraduate students in independent research projects. BDP students: If you are planning to do a research connecting experience this fall and will have expenses related to your research, please consider applying for a URF to help finance your research.

Application process: Apply by September 17th for a Fall 2013 Fellowship (spring deadline is January 22nd, 2014).
