Preservation Scholars Program

$5,000 Stipend

The Texas Historical Commission (THC) seeks to increase the diversity of professionals working in historic preservation, acknowledge the variety of cultures that enrich Texas’ heritage, and engage a wider range of organizations and communities in supporting efforts to protect and preserve the history of our state.

The Preservation Scholars Program was created to build interest in and awareness of historic preservation, specifically among students from underrepresented cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. The THC recognizes that many such groups are currently underrepresented in the professional fields related to historic preservation. This initiative targets higher education students to encourage their interest in pursuing fields of study in history, preservation, architecture, landscape architecture, archeology, downtown revitalization and heritage tourism. Students will also learn about the impact that historic preservation programs can have on a community’s economic development.

Program Goals

Increase the representation of all cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups in historic preservation careers

Increase the number of historic and cultural resources associated with the state’s diverse cultural history that are identified, documented, preserved and interpreted
Increase the number of diverse organizations and communities involved in the historic preservation field and served by public and private preservation programs.

Scholars will complete a rotation amongst all divisions headquartered in Austin and then complete a special project in a division of their choice. Scholars will receive a $5,000 stipend provided by the Friends of the Texas Historical Commission for an eight week internship (40-hour week). Scholars will work under the supervision of the THC, at its headquarters in Austin and/or “in the field” with its historic sites, an associated preservation organization such as a Main Street program, a heritage tourism program, a history museum or a historical association. Brief progress reports will be required, both during the employment period and at the conclusion of the student’s internship.

Working with THC staff and programs will expose the Scholars to the various and exciting vocational opportunities in the field of historic preservation, with the goal of encouraging more students from underrepresented ethnic groups to pursue careers in this field upon graduation. In return, the THC and its partner organizations will have the opportunity to meet promising young people who might choose to work in this field.

U.S. citizens

College students who have completed 50 or more credit hours upon start of internship

Attending a college or university in Texas, or a Texas resident attending school out-of-state

Recent graduates or college seniors applied to or accepted into a graduate program are eligible (proof of application or acceptance to a graduate program will be required)

Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 system (or comparable GPA)

Prior recipients are ineligible

Deadline & Application Instructions

The 2018 Preservation Scholar application period is January 2, 2018 – March 16, 2018. You can apply through the Friends of the Texas Historical Commissions webpage, http://www.thcfriends.org/preservation-scholars-program, with an online applciation. Official transcripts from appropriate institutions are required. Unofficial transcripts will not be accepted. Letters of reference from two (2) persons familiar with your scholarship, work experience, career goals and history of community service are required. See the link below for an explanatory letter to send when requesting a letter of reference. Letters of reference will be considered confidential unless confidentiality has been waived by the referee. Application, official transcripts, and Letters of Reference are due and must be postmarked by March 16, 2018. Applications submitted or postmarked after midnight CST on March 16th cannot be accepted. If selected, in-person or online interviews will be held in April.

Art of the Spanish Americas Internship at the Blanton

 

POSITION: Art of the Spanish Americas Intern
DEPARTMENT: Latin American Art
REPORTS TO: Rosario I. Granados, Ph. D., Carl & Marilynn Thoma Associate Curator of Spanish Colonial Art

HOURS: 160 hrs. per semester
COMPENSATION: Unpaid

DESCRIPTION:
This position will be developed in the context of the long-term loan of the Thoma Collection of South American Colonial art to the Blanton. It is an exciting and challenging opportunity to learn about the wide range of curatorial needs of an art museum for this specific period. Intern will provide assistance with current projects such as the second installation of the Art of the Spanish Americas Galleries and the 2018 Lozano long Conference, all of which will take place in mid-February 2018. Intern also will help coordinate the visit of a scholar that will be on campus to deliver public talks, and of the Thoma Scholars, an international small group of Ph. D. students conducting research at UT on the colonial period. Intern will also be involved in tracing provenance of some of the pieces on loan and those recently donated by the Cisneros Foundation of Venezuelan Colonial art.

This internship is a chance to gain valuable research and organizational experience and add real world projects to the intern’s portfolio.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Currently pursuing the BDP program in Museum Studies
  • Excellent writing, editing & proofreading skills
  • Reading comprehension of Spanish (Oral Proficiency is certainly desirable)
  • Interest in the Latin American Colonial period
  • Majors in Art History, History, Religious Studies, Spanish, and Latin American Studies are particularly encouraged to apply

DUTIES (include, but are not limited to):

  • Assist with the organization and installation of the upcoming rotation of the Art of the Spanish Americas Galleries (proof reading labels)
  • Assist with the organization of 2018 Lozano long Conference (establish contact with LLILAS staff, Blanton’s event staff and Austin Baroque Orchestra staff, solve practical questions of guest speakers)
  • Assist with the visit of scholars that will be on campus to deliver public talks (travel issues, publicity)
  • Assist with the visit of the Thoma scholars (travel issues, campus directions, publicity)
  • Assist with activities planned around “Rethinking the Conquest of Mexico”, a course taught by History Professor Susan Deans-Smith.
  • Assist with filing maintaining archival material for the museum’s records (research provenance of artworks)

Research Assistant for Study on Explaining and Exploring in Children’s Museums

In the Cognition, Culture, and Development Lab, our research focuses on how people explain the events they observe in the world around them. This current study is looking at how children learn science principles in a museum setting. Specifically we are looking at how parents-child interactions affect children’s ability to learn and apply what they have learned to new problems.

Duties:

Research assistants will have the opportunity to conduct research in a children’s museum, interacting directly with parents and their children and the museum staff. Research assistants will also be coding the video data collected at the museum.

As a research assistant in the CCD Lab, you will have the opportunity to work closely with graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and professors. You will gain valuable experience in collecting psychological data, coding data and learn about data analysis. We require a 7 to 10-hour / week commitment from our research assistants. Preferred qualifications:

We are looking for responsible, highly motivated undergraduates who have a serious interest in gaining experience in psychological research. 3.0 GPA or higher highly recommended.

Time commitment: 7-10 hrs / week
