Grants & Research Internship available with Transcendent Endeavors – Spring 21

Grants & Research Intern

Transcendent Endeavors, a company that develops digital products to help people in the areas of healthcare, education, and communication, is recruiting a full-time Grants and Research Associate in New York, NY or remote. We are searching for a part-time intern for a minimum period of 4 months with the possibility of extension to 12 months and full-time hours between semesters. A full-time offer may be extended at the end of the internship period. We are looking for someone who is passionate about using technology to improve health for underserved populations and excited by a start-up culture and a fast-paced work environment. As a part of the Grants and Research team, you will help apply for grants and carry out currently-funded projects.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Writing and editing applications for funding from agencies such as the NIH
  • Conducting systematic reviews and literature searches
  • Drafting and editing Institutional Review Board protocols, consent forms, paper and electronic surveys, and qualitative interview and focus group guides
  • Preparing annual and final reports to funders for current grants
  • Implementation of pilot studies and roll-outs of products with partner sites
  • Coding and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data
  • Help carry out the development, implementation, and analysis of each several projects
  • Attending external meetings with potential or existing partner organizations

Sample Projects:

This is a sample list of possible projects and areas that you may get to work on.

  • Language acquisition projects such as interactive e-books for pre-elementary and elementary school-aged children, a language learning app with availability of 17 different languages, a health care bedside translation app that enables English speakers to speak to their patients in the patient’s language by selecting a phrase for the app to speak.
  • Patient adherence technology focused on improving a variety of healthy behaviors, improving appointment and medication adherence, and which target different psychometrics.
  • Technologies that test and train bilingual providers in the medical setting.
  • Research populations vary widely from children to older adults. Disease focus is also varied including Maternal health, oncology, substance abuse prevention, end stage renal, HIV, etc. as well as targeting healthy behaviors such as nutrition, physical activity, drug prevention, and more. Our research also focuses on psycho demographics and socio demographics.

Qualifications:

  • Strong writing skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, public health, psychology, or related field (for undergraduate level internship)
  • MPH, masters or other relevant graduate degree, or in the process of completing a masters or Ph.D. (for graduate level internship)
  • Ability to work under high pressure and manage multiple priorities and projects
  • 1-2 years experience in health-related research
  • Proficiency in Excel

Preferred skills:

  • Proficiency in other languages, particularly Spanish or Mandarin, would be an asset.

Compensation/Credit:

  • Undergraduate level internship: $14-16 per hour or stipend depending on time available
  • Graduate level internship: $16-20 per hour or stipend depending on time available

Undergraduate Research Assistantships with the Prevention Research Lab – Spring 21

Department of kinesiology-health-education

The Prevention Research Lab, led by Dr. Keryn E. Pasch in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education, is searching for undergraduate research assistants beginning Spring 2021. Undergraduate research assistants (URAs) will work on one of two projects related to the marketing of unhealthy products (fast food, sugar sweetened beverages, and alcohol) during the COVID-19 pandemic. One project will audit the Twitter pages of leading companies that sell these products (e.g., McDonalds, Coca-Cola, Bacardi) with an aim of documenting how social media marketing tactics adapted to the pandemic. Another project will examine television commercials for these products, with the aim of describing how commercial marketing for unhealthy products has changed with the pandemic.

Additional research opportunities such as literature searching, transcribing, and data summaries may be available.

REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to commit approximately ten hours of work per week during the Spring 2021 semester.

A flexible summer schedule with the ability to commit approximately three hours of work per week during the summer.

Prior research experience is a plus but not necessary.

Applicants who are able to commit to the spring and fall semesters (summer also available) will be given priority. However, if you are graduating in spring or summer 2021, you will still be considered.

About the HealthStart Foundation

HealthStart’s mission is to provide the blueprints for building healthier communities through children’s health science education. We teach kids how their body works, what it’s made of, and how this relates to what to eat and how to keep their bodies healthy. HealthStart lessons also teach kids that taking care of one another, and our environment builds community health and wellbeing.

HealthStart is currently accepting applications for spring 2021 internships in the areas of curriculum building, grant development, health promotions, video production, digital marketing,  game programming, and game illustration.

Curriculum Specialist Intern

HealthStart seeks an intern interested in building a healthier future for our children by ensuring our curriculum and other program materials are complete for PreK-4th grade. By doing so, you will make it easier for schools to incorporate health science into their learning environment. Our Curriculum Specialist Intern will gain experience in program development, educational standards, and nonprofit work.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

HealthStart seeks a part-time Curriculum Specialist intern with highly developed organizational skills, time management, and research skills. Interns work 12-15 hours per week under the supervision of our Executive Director. This experience should be highly transferable to jobs involving curriculum development, program development, and health education or primary education.

Job responsibilities may include:

  • Assist in the continuation of making all resources available digitally
  • Identify and package existing materials for the implementation of HealthStart programs
  • Work with HealthStart staff to develop program materials for implementation including lesson guides, standards posters, and activity instructions
  • Continue development of Scope & Sequence for each curriculum lesson/topic.
  • Assist in script development for Snack Science Video Series.
  • Attend HealthStart’s Education Committee.
  • Other curriculum specialist related tasks as assigned 

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates for the position must have experience with or a strong interest in program development, health education, primary education, curriculum development, nonprofit development, or related activity. A strong interest in health and wellness or early childhood education is preferred. Must be familiar with basic computer operations including MS WORD, EXCEL, and the Internet.

HealthStart seeks an intern interested in building a healthier future for our children by assisting in community outreach, partner development, data collection, and other tasks that help us evaluate the effectiveness of our programs. Our Health Promotion Intern will gain experience in pilot program development, evaluation techniques, and nonprofit work.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

HealthStart seeks a part-time Curriculum Specialist intern with highly developed organizational skills, time management, and research skills. Interns work 12-15 hours per week under the supervision of our Executive Director. This experience should be highly transferable to jobs involving program development, evaluation, and health promotion.

Job responsibilities may include:

  • Develop materials that will help HealthStart speak to our competencies in health and science education.
  • Work with the HealthStart team to develop a strategy for recruiting new school partners.
  • Research influential groups in the community or on social media for collaboration or promotion efforts.
  • Assisting with Health Promotion activities, community outreach, and other events that educate and raise HealthStart’s profile
  • Assist in organizing and analyzing data collected from program evaluations
  • Working directly with HealthStart’s Scientific Committee
  • Report findings to HealthStart’s Education Committee when necessary
  • Other health promotion related tasks as assigned

Video Production Intern

HealthStart seeks an intern interested in building a healthier future for our children by creating videos for health science education, social media campaigns, and all other video content used to amplify our message and magnify our impact. Our Video Production Intern will gain experience in filming, film editing, program development, and nonprofit work.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

HealthStart seeks a part-time Video Production intern who’s creative, well-organized, has experience with video production, and wants to make concepts come to life. Interns work 12-15 hours per week under the supervision of our Executive Director. This experience should be highly transferable to jobs involving videography, advertising, and program development.

Job responsibilities may include:

  • Film new episodes of our Snack Science Video Series (3 new episodes a month)
  • Create and produce short impact videos and other projects as needed to spread HealthStart’s mission
  • Assist HS staff from start to finish on all video-related projects
  • Use HealthStart’s equipment (ie including ring light, green screen, etc.) and/or your own to produce videos with a high production value
  • Basic video editing on Adobe Premier
  • Work with HS to develop video concepts and finalize video edits to ensure proper conveyance of HealthStart lessons
  • Work with HS staff and other interns on script development
  • Other video production-related tasks as assigned 

QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates for the position must have experience with or a strong interest in filming video editing, program development, nonprofit development, or related activity. A strong interest in health and wellness or early childhood education is preferred. Must be familiar with basic computer operations including MS WORD, EXCEL, and the Internet.

In addition, candidates should have some or all of the following skills:

  • Experience with video animation and Adobe After Effects software – preferred but not required
  • Experience filming with iPhone, green screen, and other related equipment
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (1-2 years+) – preferred but not required
  • A willingness to learn new things or new ways of doing things
  • Ability to meet deadlines with little or no daily onsite supervision
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Grant Development Intern

HealthStart seeks an intern interested in building a healthier future for our children by helping us streamline the grant proposal process to increase resources and magnify our impact. Our Grant Development Intern will gain an understanding of the grant proposal process, fund development, and non-profit development.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

HealthStart is currently seeking a part-time Grant Development Intern with highly developed organizational skills, attention to detail, and strong research skills. Interns work 12-15 hours per week under the supervision of our Executive Director.

Job Responsibilities may include

  • Seeking out new grant funding opportunities which align with HS mission and report findings
  • Performing in-depth research into grant-making organizations and requirements to prioritize and evaluate prospects for grants
  • Compiling and presenting research and data which affect HealthStart programs
  • Assist in writing and editing high-quality grant proposals to governments, foundations, and corporations, in accordance with each grantmaker’s preferences and requirements
  • Take existing HealthStart documents from previous grant proposals and review/organize those items needed for each program. (ie. Research, Budget, Program Descriptions, etc.)
  • Develop a grant template for each HealthStart program/initiative to enable an easy grant submission process at the local, state, and federal levels.
  • Other grant development related tasks as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates for the position should have a strong interest in or prior experience with fund development, nonprofit development, or related activity. Knowledge of the grant process is a plus. A strong interest in health and wellness or early childhood education is preferred. Must be familiar with basic computer operations including MS WORD, EXCEL, and the Internet, and Adobe Creative Suite.

In addition, candidates should have some or all of the following skills:

HealthStart seeks an intern interested in building a healthier future for our children by helping us create a digital marketing strategy to amplify our message and magnify our impact. Our Digital Marketing Strategist Intern will gain experience in a variety of tasks that include media outreach, content creation, developing marketing/public relations strategies, and nonprofit development.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

HealthStart seeks a part-time Digital Marketing Strategist Intern with highly developed organizational skills, time management, and creative talents. Interns work 12-15 hours per week under the supervision of our Executive Director.You will be part of a team shaping HealthStart’s message through social media, marketing campaigns designed to inform and attract new visitors/supporters, and related tasks. All of these experiences should be highly transferable to a professional work environment.

Job responsibilities may include:

  • Working with HealthStart staff to develop a strategy to maximize the impact of our social media and other digital marketing campaigns.
  • Crafting innovative account-based marketing campaigns and assist in analyzing and reporting campaign results.
  • Create original marketing content, blog posts, and social media posts that engage audiences across multiple channels (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)
  • Identify real-time trends & translate to social media opportunities.
  • Prospecting & interacting with social media accounts to raise HealthStart’s profile and brand awareness
  • Create monthly marketing reports using Google Analytics and social media insights
  • Review online content to ensure SEO maximization through the use of keywords, #tags, and other strategies

Game Programmer Intern

HealthStart seeks an intern that will use their programming skills to help change the world for the better by helping us ensure the code behind our health education mobile game is standardized and can be easily built upon for further game development. Our Game Programmer Intern will gain experience in a variety of tasks that include game code development, game testing, and user testing.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

HealthStart seeks a part-time Interactive Game Programmer intern with highly developed organizational skills, ability to manage their time, and creative talents. Interns work 12-15 hours per week under the supervision of the teams Project Manager.

The intern will work with a remote team to help develop MonstraliaTM: A Healthy Life For Your Little Monster™ app from written design documents and wireframes. The intern may also participate in user testing which involves identifying ease of play, level of engagement, efficacy in conveying health messages, and opportunities for improving gameplay. Additionally, the intern will work with the team to fix design flaws and bugs identified during user testing. If their skills and interests enable them to do so, the intern also may be involved in the actual design of the art, backgrounds, and animation related to the game.

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates for the position must have experience/familiarity with programming, game development or related activities. A strong interest in gaming for good is preferred.

Required Skills:

  • Proficient using C# with Unity
  • Experience with Game Development
  • Basic understanding of object-oriented programming
  • Ability to work with existing code and existing code documentation
  • Ability to communicate quickly and effectively
  • Ability to stay organized and up to date with the various tasks and assignments.

Bonus skills:

  • Experience or a strong interest in health and wellness or early childhood education
  • Animation and/or illustration experience a plus
  • Experience creating illustrations in Illustrator or Photoshop.
  • Fluent in Spanish

Game Illustrator Intern

HealthStart seeks an intern that will use their illustration and art talents to help change the world for the better by using their artistic abilities to develop illustrations for a mobile game to teach children from 3 to 8 years of age healthy habits. Our Game Illustration Intern will gain experience in a variety of tasks that include creating original graphics and game development.

Responsibilities:

HealthStart seeks a part-time intern with excellent artistic, organizational, and communication skills. Interns work 12-15 hours per week under the supervision of our Curriculum Coordinator.

You will work directly with our Curriculum Coordinator who produces and designs our curriculum, marketing, educational and outreach materials. HealthStart has a health education game, Monstralia™: A Healthy Life For Your Little Monster. for children 3 to 8 years of age in development. Your primary work will be to develop art assets for Monstralia™. When the game is complete it will have 25 different mini-games. HealthStart has completed art assets for 15 of the 25 games. You will work in a team environment (albeit virtually) with our programmers and Curriculum Coordinator to ensure a visually fun and interesting game for our players. All of these experiences should be highly transferable to any other creative work environment.

Job responsibilities may include:

  • Create graphics for Monstralia™ mobile game using Photoshop and Illustrator.
  • Create backgrounds using a drawing tablet for Monstralia™.
  • Help create promotional materials for upcoming events such as flyers, web banners, and other materials.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

Candidates for the position must have experience/familiarity with illustration, design, or related activities. A strong interest in gaming for good is preferred. Must have experience with Adobe Creative Suite including PhotoShop, InDesign, and Illustrator and be familiar with basic computer operations including MS WORD, EXCEL, the Internet, and HTML. In addition, candidates should have some or all of the following skills:

  • Drawing/illustration experience
  • Experience with drawing tablets and creating simple digital paintings
  • Experience with Illustrator, and creating vector graphics with the pen tool
  • UI experience a plus.
  • Work on game illustration a plus.
  • Animation skills a plus but not required
