The Institute for Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (IDVSA) welcomes applications this summer to The Human Trafficking Practice & Research Fellows Project. This program lasts for one academic year, both Fall and Spring semesters. Students commit to six hours per week and will receive a stipend. The mission of the Institute on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault (IDVSA) is to advance knowledge about interpersonal violence. IDVSA is a collaboration of the Schools of Social Work, Law, and Nursing, in addition to the IC² Bureau of Business Research.
The Human Trafficking Practice & Research Fellows Project aims to advance understanding of human trafficking (HT) crimes, improve the lives of survivors, and provide undergraduate students opportunities to engage in research and policy initiatives. The project seeks to strengthen community partnerships and improve services through research and policy. Founded on the premise that the field has unmet research needs, the project will align students, community partners, and enhance students’ professional capacities for work in the HT field.
Our work often requires ongoing collaborations with community partners as we have found that more meaningful impact is achieved when our work is grounded in multi-disciplinary collaborations. Research Fellows in Human Trafficking will collaborate with Allies Against Slavery, Refugee Services of Texas, Redeemed Ministries, and other organizations that provide direct and indirect services on issues of human trafficking.
Objectives for Human Trafficking Practice and Research Fellows:
- Advancement in understanding of human trafficking.
- Implement research, policy, or practice projects to lessen the burden on practitioners working in the field.
- Contribute to the alleviation of human suffering through critical inquiry.
- Integrate theoretical knowledge with research activities and engagement.
- Build competence in research processes and ethics with vulnerable human subjects.
- Actively engage in research learning and initiatives on human trafficking with an interdisciplinary cohort.
- Engage in research learning with interprofessional faculty.
- Disseminate findings at undergraduate research forums.
- Meet community needs through the dissemination and application of meaningful findings.
Interested students can e-mail a brief description of their research interests and their resume to Margaret Bassett (margaret.bassett@austin.utexas.edu).
