Local Political Research Internship through the Political Science Department of Columbia University

The Political Science Department of Columbia University is looking for interns to assist on a summer research project studying political opinion among Latinos in Texas. Interns will collect surveys at doors and over the phone in Austin neighborhoods during evening and weekends in June.

The project is part of a broader research effort that is the first of its kind. The project will be supervised by Professor Donald Green from the Political Science Department at Columbia University and David Broockman at the University of California-Berkeley.
 
This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience for students who are thinking about working in political campaigns, applying to graduate programs, or learning about statistics or survey methodology. All interns will receive basic training in data gathering,  survey methodology, and research design from Narayani Lasala-Blanco, expert in survey design from the Political Science Department at Columbia University.

 

Details:
– Interns will work approximately 3 hours a day during weeknights and seven hours a day during weekends, for approximately 30 hours a week total.
– Pay will range from $10 to $15 per hour, depending on experience and language skills.
– The internship will last four weeks, from approximately June 1 – June 30, with the potential for extension in August and September.
– Undergraduate and graduate students from all fields and majors are encouraged to apply.

1. A CV that includes a brief description of your academic background and GPA.
2. A brief statement of why you are interested in participating.
3. Confirmation of availability during evenings and weekends in late May and June.
3. Specific availability in the next 1-2 weeks for a Skype or phone interview.
4. Whether you own an iPad, tablet, or a smartphone you could use during the project.
5. Whether you have a car or would need transportation to the survey sites. (If you are interested in providing transportation the research team from campus to the neighborhoods, we would reimburse you for the gas and receive additional compensation.)

Internships with Project Vote Smart

Project Vote Smart is a nonprofit, nonpartisan voter education and political research organization committed to exposing the truth about those who govern us.

Project Vote Smart is currently recruiting interns to work in their UT Austin office. A few positions are still open for Summer 2014, and they have begun accepting applications for the Fall 2014 program. Applications accepted on a rolling basis.

Ted Strauss Civic Internship Award

University of Texas undergraduate students who will not be graduating before December 2014 are invited to apply for The Ted Strauss Civic Internship Award to supplement their paid or unpaid internship in the fields of public policy, public service, government, or politics for the summer.  Previous award winners have worked for CNN, the U.S. Department of Education, the United States Senate, Defenders of Wildlife, the Muscular Dystrophy Association among other organizations and governmental agencies.

Amount of the stipend:  $2,000

Internship Requirements:

  • Internship must be in the area of public policy, public service, government, or politics.
  • Must be an undergraduate and not be graduating before December 2014.
  • Internship must be a minimum of 10 hours a week for 10 weeks.
  • Internship must not include more than 25% clerical work.
  • Course credit is preferred, but not required.

Expectations by the Institute: The recipients will be expected to write a summary of their experience by September 15, 2014 and to make a brief oral report at the Strauss Institute’s advisory council meeting following their internship experience if requested.
