Internship Opportunities

Communications & Marketing Intern
Austin/Dallas/Remote

LSJA is seeking a dynamic, self-starter to assist in marketing and communications efforts (approximately 10-15 hours/week). This internship is an excellent opportunity to experience various aspects of marketing while working in a casual work environment. The communications intern will work with staff and volunteers on digital, promotional, and event media. The intern will help develop communication initiatives, website, and social media content, and assist in the creation of LSJA materials. This is an unpaid position with the potential of future employment.

Duties:​

  • Assist with development of creative concepts and marketing strategies for promoting LSJA’s program areas;
  • Assist in planning, writing, and managing electronic newsletters, websites, and social media;
  • Help create and implement an annual communications calendar;
  • Foster relationships with local media and help draft press releases and event marketing;
  • Manage photo and video content;
  • Collaborate with staff on new ideas, directions, and tools for marketing and communications;
  • Other duties as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Firm grasp of social media tools and platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Hootsuite, Weebly, etc;
  • Excellent writing skills;
  • Experience in website design, construction, and management;
  • Proactive in monitoring social media accounts and engaging in outreach;
  • Self-starter, good time management, creative with ability to communicate in a professional manner;
  • Ability to work well independently as well as within a team;
  • Commitment to the continuous improvement of service quality and the organization’s mission.

Non-essential but highly desirable:

  • Knowledge of HTML, website content management and graphic design.

Emerging Adult Justice Intern 
Austin/Dallas/Remote

The Emerging Adult Justice intern will be part-time in the LSJA office (approximately 10-15 hours/week). Current students are encouraged to apply. Fellow’s responsibilities may include researching different justice-related policies or proposed policies that impact LSJA’s current or future projects, including the launch of an innovative alternative to incarceration program for emerging adults. Fellows will also have the opportunity to attend local briefings and hearings. This is an unpaid position with the potential of future employment.

Duties:

  • Local, state, and federal research into justice-related policies;
  • Qualitative and quantitative data collection, entry, and analysis;
  • Additional duties include: preparing literature reviews, drafting blog entries for LSJA’s website, and assisting with specific research requests;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest in criminal and juvenile justice issues;
  • Strong organization and communication skills;
  • Ability to handle a dynamic and demanding startup nonprofit workload;
  • Excellent writing skills;
  • Commitment to the continuous improvement of service quality and the organization’s mission.

Research and Policy Intern
Austin/Dallas/Remote

The Research and Policy Intern will intern part-time in the LSJA office (approximately 10-15 hours/week). Intern responsibilities may include researching different justice-related policies (local, state, federal) or proposed policies (reform bills) that could impact LSJA’s current or future projects, and assisting with various research-related tasks. These tasks may include quantitative and/or qualitative data collection, data entry, and/or analysis, preparing literature reviews, drafting blog entries for LSJA’s website, and assisting with specific state-level policy requests. Interns will also have the opportunity to attend local and state briefings and hearings. This is an unpaid position with the potential of future employment.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent analytical and research skills;
  • Understanding of criminal and juvenile justice policy;
  • Experience with large data set analysis, entry, and collection;
  • Understanding of quantitative methodologies;​
  • Commitment to the continuous improvement of service quality and the organization’s mission.

Survivors’ Project Intern
Austin/Dallas/Remote

LSJA seeks interns to work on an emerging project to seek clemency for victims of sex trafficking and intimate partner violence (approximately 10-15 hours/week). This project will capitalize on a new clemency application established by Governor Abbott as a result of LSJA’s advocacy. The project entails identifying potential applicants and pro bono partners to submit a high volume of meritorious applications, as well as follow-up data collection and reporting to raise awareness about underlying issues. Interns will assist in all aspects of the project, from correspondence and review of records for potential applicants, to communication with pro bono organizations and practitioners, to preparation and review of application materials, to data collection/review and drafting of report sections. This is an exciting and rare opportunity to be part of a new initiative that stands to bring hope and redemption to a large number of people. Current law students may apply. The position is unpaid, but future employment is a possibility. This is an unpaid position with the potential of future employment.

Duties:

  • Drafting and review of correspondence materials;
  • Record collection and review;
  • Participation in strategic conferences with partners;
  • Communication with coalition and pro bono partners;
  • Data collection/review;
  • Possible report drafting;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest work;
  • Background in issues pertaining to sex trafficking, domestic violence, or other forms of trauma a plus;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Strong organizational and communication skills;
  • Ability to coordinate multiple aspects of a complex project involving many and varied personnel;
  • Ability to review and compile data/familiarity with statistical analysis;​
  • Commitment to the continuous improvement of service quality and the organization’s mission.

Public Policy Intern
Austin/Dallas/Remote

LSJA is currently accepting applications for a remote legislative internship program during the upcoming 88th Texas Legislative Session. The LSJA Internship Program offers an unparalleled opportunity for college students, graduate students, and recent graduates to learn more about public affairs, governmental affairs, and non-profit communications campaigns through day-to-day responsibilities and experiences not found in other programs. Our intern program plays a critical role in both client work and internal projects, often involving research and writing components. Candidates must have a strong work ethic, an interest in Texas politics, and a willingness to accept responsibility and contribute immediately to LSJA’s mission, values, and goals. Applicants should be motivated, fast learners with demonstrated writing, research, and organizational skills. A keen interest in government, politics, or corporate strategy is preferred. Potential candidates must also have Internet access, familiarity with web conferencing platforms, and the ability to work remotely for a minimum of 15 hours a week for the duration of the 88th Texas Legislative session.

Internships with the Children’s Advocacy Center – Spring 2022

About the Children’s Advocacy Center

The Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) of Bastrop, Lee and Fayette Counties is where the cycle of abuse stops and healing begins.

It is a child-friendly facility where child victims of abuse may be interviewed, undergo medical evaluations and receive therapy. In addition, the Center provides extensive training for protective caretakers and child abuse and neglect education to the communities we serve.

We serve children ages 17 and under who are victims or at risk of abuse, child witnesses of violent crime, non-offending family members and at-risk children and families. We are a neutral, child friendly organization that facilitates a multidisciplinary team approach to the investigation, prosecution, intervention and treatment of child abuse.

About The Salvation Army – Austin Area Command

The Salvation Army is the largest provider of emergency shelter in Central Texas. Inspired by our Christian mission, we do so much to lift those in crisis in our community. True to our motto of Doing The Most Good, we annually we serve over 10,000 Central Texans. Each year we provide over 100,000 nights in shelter, relief for disaster victims, addition rehabilitation, clothing, meals, holiday support, ~$2 million on direct client assistance, and case manage hundreds from crisis to stability and self-sufficiency.

Area Command is the administrative headquarters for our two-county operation in Central Texas. Supporting our three area shelters and Williamson County Service Center, we are a dynamic leadership team responsible for fundraising/development, communications, volunteers, Human Resources, IT, and finance.

Role Description

Interns: Development (Fundraising) / Events / Communications / Volunteers

Assist our energetic, highly-motivated, and very successful development team of nine professionals with various fundraising, volunteer, event and communication projects. Will include hands-on experience of assigned projects including strategic planning, logistics, execution, and evaluation. Interns will have assigned deliverables and accountability to project leaders, and will be able to show results via end-of-term portfolio. Leaders are willing to write reference/performance letters and complete internship-for-college-course-credit paperwork.

10 – 12 hours per week, flexible from Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm, may include minimal hours worked remotely and/or offsite. Office is located at 4700 Manor Road. Casual, nice office attire required. Reliable, personal transportation is recommended but not required.

In addition to regular office hours, each internship includes attendance at:
  • Two-hour orientation the week of January 24 (mutually determined date and time)
  • Three-hour shift in support of Doing The Most Good Breakfast at the Hyatt Regency either
    • (1)   the evening of February 9 (pack up, move in, set up) from 8:00 – 11:00 p.m.
    • OR
    • (2) February 10 (registration, event execution, clean up) from 7:00 – 10:00 a.m.
  • Four-hour shift at our fundraising event at TopGolf on May 13 from 4:30 – 8:30 p.m.
  • 4 three-hour shifts at our family shelters with volunteers and children – flexible, will include evening and weekend options.
Must pass a background check before the January 24 start date and complete our “Safe from Harm” online course by February 4.

Applications due December 8. Please include an updated resume including work, volunteer, and leadership experience, relevant skills and coursework, and overall GPA.  Please also include a thoughtful cover letter stating what you hope to get out of an internship at The Salvation Army and specifically with the development staff. Incomplete applications and/or generic cover letters will not be considered.

Selections announced by December 15; start date is the week of January 24.  Internship pay is $10/hour as a part time employee of The Salvation Army with an estimate of 200 hours over the course of the four months.

Specific opportunities: Interns will be involved in various tasks across one or more disciplines listed below.  Please note: actual job assignments and projects may shift based on current team priorities and/or other interns’ interests, skills, and expertise.

Communications: Assist with media relations and writing projects including blog posts, social media posts, and press releases.  Assist with videography – client and stakeholder interviews including storyboarding, filming and editing; master calendaring of communication projects; graphic design support and skill acquisition. Assist with researching and archiving external communications including all media articles, social media posts, media mentions as well as social media statistics and analytics.

Fundraising: Assist with donor relations: writing projects, donor research, scheduling of donor meetings, writing and mailing donation acknowledgement letters and thank you notes, answering donor phone and email inquiries. Assist with foundation and corporate funder research, grant proposal and report writing, editing and submissions. Assist with late winter thank you project of board members reaching out to major donors as well as springtime fundraising appeals. Learn basic gift processing, database updates, and donor interaction/communication entries.

Volunteers: Assist with promoting volunteer opportunities, setting up shifts online, helping volunteers sign up for shifts. Assist with shifts at family shelters including craft projects, story time, gardening, outdoor sports (i.e. basketball), etc.  Help with birthday celebrations for the children in our shelters and special activities.  Work closely with shelter case workers to ensure clients in shelter receive special project items/donations.

Events: Assist with the planning and day of execution of Doing the Most Good Breakfast 2022, Swing FORE Austin at TopGolf 2022, and other 2022 events. Assist with Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary events if requested and school schedule allows.  Event tasks could include graphic design and wording of various event collateral pieces (invitations, email reminders, event program and PPT presentation), assisting with guest registration and donor relations, help with run of show and “on stage” activities, interface with vendors and collaborative partners for streamlined, guest-centric experience. Assist with the planning and execution of board meetings and other outward facing activities.
