About The Jed Foundation

JED is a nonprofit that protects emotional health and prevents suicide for our nation’s teens and young adults. We’re partnering with high schools and colleges to strengthen their mental health, substance misuse and suicide prevention programs and systems. We’re equipping teens and young adults with the skills and knowledge to help themselves and each other. We’re encouraging community awareness, understanding and action for young adult mental health.

S2i Intern

The Mental Health Strategic Impact Initiative (S2i) is a think-and-do tank that seeks to transform mental health for all. With a focus on centering  the expertise of people of color and people with lived experience of mental health conditions in all of its work, S2i advances collaborative and strategic interventions by generating new ideas, incubating projects, creating opportunities for cross-sector learning, and facilitating philanthropic investment in mental health and adjacent sectors (such as the criminal justice system, housing/homelessness systems, etc.).

Key Responsibilities

The S2i intern will be a respected team member responsible for supporting S2i’s core leadership team and our network. The intern will be expected to display a high level of maturity and discretion to work effectively with senior level-professionals and national experts. The intern’s specific job duties will include providing research, writing, and administrative support:

Research
  • Conducting research to track key policy/ practice changes in mental health
  • Reading relevant reports/ materials to create annotated bibliographies
  • Tracking trends and collecting data on philanthropic investment in mental health
Writing 
  • Completing brief background research summaries for papers and meetings
  • Assisting with organizing citations, biographies, and other writing support
  • Co-writing the S2i Monthly Update newsletter
Administration/ Coordination
  • Organizing and expanding the S2i digital library
  • Providing logistical coordination and other support for meetings/ convenings
  • Attending and supporting S2i’s network of experts/ Advisory Committee meetings
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise

  • Prior experience synthesizing complex information, conducting literature reviews, and creating annotated bibliographies
  • Professional and/or research writing and communications experience preferred but not essential
  • Able to work independently with strong time and self-management skills
  • Strong computer skills inclusive of virtual meeting/ sharing platforms and social media platforms
  • Applicants of color, especially those with lived experience of mental health conditions are strongly encouraged to apply
Education:
  • Pursuing or obtained a Bachelors and/or Masters in a relevant field.
Interest in Mental Health and Suicide Prevention

Internship Details

  • This is a 3-month fall internship opportunity with a potential to be extended.
  • The internship is for 5-10 hours a week and pays $15/hr.
  • This part-time internship can fulfill the intern’s formal education program by integrating coursework and the receipt of academic credit, if required.
  • A job is not guaranteed upon completion of the internship/training program or completion of the intern’s schooling.

Internships Available with One Good Turn – Fall 2021

About One Good Turn

One Good Turn is a global health nonprofit based in Austin, TX. Our mission is to provide practical medical education and care to underserved communities worldwide. We partner directly with health workers in the communities we serve. We create medical education and training protocols for our partners, who often have little-to-no formal health training. One Good Turn is currently seeking a  Medical Research & Programming Intern to assist our Medical Programming team and Executive Director with the research, development, and writing of medical education protocols for our global partners. This internship offers the opportunity to gain medical research skills and develop medical knowledge, especially within the context of global health.

What You Will Do

  • Research assigned medical topics including anatomy, diagnosis, clinical skills, and symptom treatment
  • Create medical education materials including written protocols, infographics, and other documents
  • Collaborate with the Medical Programming team and Executive Director to ensure accuracy in medical education materials
  • Consider regionally specific knowledge & education levels when creating medical education materials
  • Interns should expect to write 2-6 medical education protocols during the Fall 2021 semester

What You Will Learn

  • How to create and structure medical education materials designed for health workers with little-to-no formal training, easily understood across cultures and languages
  • About common medical conditions in developing countries around the tropical belt
  • About regionally specific knowledge, resources, and treatments for common medical conditions
  • An overview of the global health industry and landscape

The Ideal Candidate…

  • Is currently enrolled (or has demonstrated interest/experience) in one or more of the following fields: pre-med/biology, medical research and/or writing, writing intensive programs, public health
    • Note: Other academic programs will be considered; all applicants welcome.
  • Is self motivated, driven, creative, and willing to learn
  • Is flexible and willing to collaborate remotely
  • Demonstrates the ability to write with different audiences in mind
  • Has access to their own laptop/computer
  • Is available for 5-10+ hours weekly, including weekly planning meetings, for the entire Fall 2021 semester

Important Information

This internship is unpaid, but will provide valuable professional experience and an incredible learning opportunity for anyone interested in global health and providing medical education. Class or program credit can be available when applicable. This internship is for the Fall 2021 semester but could continue into the Spring should the working relationship prove valuable to all parties. Mid-semester and end of semester evaluations will be conducted to ensure a beneficial internship experience for both parties.

Through the years, CDF-Texas has been honored to welcome dozens of gifted college and graduate-level students as interns to advance our mission to ensure children across Texas a Healthy Start, a Safe Start, a Fair Start, a Head Start and a Moral Start to life.

We are proud to house an intentional, structured internship program where students get firsthand experience with professional advocacy, affecting policy change, working with young people, and more, while being connected with one of the most powerful networks in the nonprofit world. Internship Details

  • Timeframe: Fall term, Late August through Mid-December
  • Compensation: $15/hour for up to 20 hours/week
  • Deadlines: Applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis, with a final deadline of August 21 at 11:59pm.
  • Location: All internships will be virtual through fall 2021. The Youth Programs intern may be asked to coordinate occasional in-person events in Houston.

Health Care Policy Internship

Position Summary

This internship is based in Austin (remote during the pandemic) and provides general support to the CDF-TX Health Care team. The intern works 20 hours/week and provides substantive research, compiles reports, monitors legislative committees, and helps with the execution of advocacy-related activities, including story collection, public education, legislator visits, legislative briefings, special event planning, and social media work.

Responsibilities

  • Produce policy research, memos, and training material
  • Conduct research on state and federal healthcare policy, state lawmakers, media trends, and other subjects as needed
  • Coordinate meetings with state lawmakers and their staff
  • Collaborate with partners on coalition-wide activities
  • Assist in the development and execution of special projects, such as the #SickofitTX Campaign
  • Perform other division, department, and organization-wide projects as needed
  • Assist in maintaining CDF’s social media platforms

Youth Civic Education and Engagement Internship

Position Summary

The internship is based in Austin (remote during the COVID-19 pandemic) and provides general support for the CDF-TX Youth Civic Education and Engagement initiative. The intern works 20 hours/week supporting both our policy and organizing work to increase youth civic education and engagement. The youth civic engagement intern provides substantive policy research and reports and monitors legislative committees and the State Board of Education on improving youth civic engagement and education in Texas. Additionally, the intern assists with outreach to partners and school districts to encourage the prioritization of culturally sustaining civic education in Texas’ public school classrooms. The intern also supports outreach to young people statewide to support our Young Advocates campaign, as well as provides critical support in developing training and events to increase young people’s knowledge of and engagement with state legislative and local civic processes.

Responsibilities

  • Plans civic engagement opportunities with and for youth.
  • Conducts research on public policy, media trends and other subjects as needed.
  • Writes policy briefs and training material.
  • Assists in the development and execution of special projects.
  • Assist in maintaining CDF’s social media platforms.

Youth Programs Internship

Position Summary

The internship is based in Houston and provides general support for CDF-TX Youth Programs, especially the CDF Beat the Odds® Scholarship Program and its corresponding initiatives. The intern works 20 hours/week to support scholarship application and administration; fundraiser event planning; ongoing donor engagement; BTO alumni network growth; and youth civic education and engagement expansion to the greater Houston area; as well as other duties as assigned by Youth Programs Coordinator (YPC).

Responsibilities

  • Develop relationships among current BTO honorees
  • Help plan events for BTO alumni
  • Aid in producing monthly BTO Network News email newsletter
  • Assist in mentoring program and process
  • Communicate regularly with BTO honorees via text and/or social media
  • Support fundraiser event planning efforts as needed
  • Provide administrative support to BTO application process
  • Explore ways to expand the BTO program and raise up the next generation of advocates
  • Meet with YPC weekly to set agenda, determine priorities and/or provide updates on assignments

Education and/or Experience

  • High school diploma, pursuing or recently completed a college degree
  • Previous internship/work experience in a professional setting a plus

Preferred Qualifications

  • BTO Alumni will be given preference

Competencies

  • Commitment to social advocacy and CDF mission to be a voice for all children
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to meet students where they are and create content relevant to them for the purpose of connection

Largely an indoor, office setting, though work from home is definitely feasible

Occasional attendance at events that may be outdoor or require minor physical activity
