Barbara Harlow Internship in Human Rights and Social Justice – Fall 21

Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice

The Bernard and Audre Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice is now accepting applications for the Fall 2021 Barbara Harlow Internship in Human Rights and Social Justice. This internship, which offers a modest stipend, is only open to BDP students. Our fall 2021 internships will be in-person. Applications will be due by midnight on Friday, July 23, 2021.

The Barbara Harlow Internship honors the life and work of Barbara Harlow (1948-2017), who was the Louann and Larry Temple Centennial Professor of English Literature at the University of Texas. She was a committed colleague, friend, and mentor to countless students, activists, and intellectuals. As a collaboration between the Rapoport Center and the Bridging Disciplines Programs (BDP), the internship aims to introduce BDP students to Harlow’s scholarship and activism, and to encourage them to imagine future trajectories for her work.

This internship is chosen to honor Barbara Harlow because it was largely through her efforts that the Rapoport Center and the BDP partnered to create the Human Rights & Social Justice BDP certificate in 2009. Harlow chaired the faculty panel for the certificate from its inception until 2017. While the internship is open to all BDP students, regardless of which certificate they are pursuing, it is meant for students who are working on issues of social justice. Harlow interns bring excitement and expanded capabilities to the Rapoport Center and play an important role, supporting various initiatives depending on their background, interest, and the needs of the Center. For Fall 2021, we are particularly interested in interns who can help who can help us with continued project-related follow-up to our 2021 Pop-Up Institute, “Beyond the Future of Work: New Paradigms for Addressing Global Inequality.” The project focuses on exploring pressing questions around the future of work addressing diverse themes such as care work, essential work, automation, and the global dimensions of worker precarity.

Fall 2021 projects may include the following:

  • Maintain the website for the Rapoport Center’s Pop-Up Institute “Beyond the Future of Work: New Paradigms for Addressing Global Inequality,” and other project-related follow-up.
  • Engage in human rights research and writing
  • Expand the Center’s social media outreach
  • Serve as liaison to UT undergraduate community and help develop Center’s undergraduate outreach
  •  Work on the publication of the Center’s Annual Review by writing and editing articles, designing layout, and working extensively with the software program InDesign

Required Qualifications

  • Commitment to working on issues of human rights and justice
  • Excellent writing and editing ability
  • Individual initiative and flexibility
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Professional demeanor

The following qualifications may be preferred in some candidates:

Priority:

  • Website development experience (including the curation and organization of public-facing digital material)
  • Demonstrated expertise with videography, podcasts, and/or webisode production
  • Demonstrated expertise with publication and graphic design software (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite)
  • Demonstrated interest in themes such as care work, essential work, automation, and the global dimensions of worker precarity

Also:

  • Proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese
  • Experience with scholarly research and editing
  • Journalism experience

Additional Information & Expectations

Our fall 2021 internships will be in-person. Selected interns should be available at least 10 hours per week during the semester. Though the internship is similar to the Rapoport Center’s standard undergraduate internship, the Harlow internship offers a higher stipend and requires three additional components:

  • In the cover letter, students should reflect (in one paragraph) on how Harlow’s scholarship and activism might influence their work with the Rapoport Center and their pursuit of human rights and social justice more broadly (see below).
  • During the internship, each recipient will write a piece for our Human Rights Commentary page, which either engages directly with Harlow’s work or uses her work as a lens through which to engage critically with a topic.
  • After the internship, each recipient will create a poster to reflect on the internship, taking into account Harlow’s impact on their experience, and present it at the Annual BDP poster session in April. (Fall and Summer interns will submit at the end of their respective term, and then present in April.)

  • List of three references
    At least two must be UT faculty; include name, title, and contact information; full letters not required
  • Writing sample
    3-5 pages; does not need to relate directly to human rights, although that is preferable

Well Aware Internship – Fall 2021

Well Aware currently offers an unpaid position of Social Media Intern. You will be devoted to all of our media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.); this includes assisting in content creation, post scheduling, message responses, and staying up to date on best practices. Social Media Intern must be available a minimum of 10 hours per week.

Overview of Well Aware’s Internship program:

Well Aware’s internship program is designed to provide undergraduate and graduate students with a high-level educational experience in the day-to-day programs and operations of a small, lean nonprofit. Interns are encouraged to ask questions regarding implementation of clean water systems in Africa, community development, training and education in Well Aware’s project regions, development and fundraising work, and organization and administration of nonprofit management.

Interns will be assigned a supervisor that will oversee and guide their experience.

Other responsibilities may include: 

  • Conducting prospect research on individual, foundation, and corporate donors
  • Maintaining donor and grant databases and files, including calendaring deadlines, logging donations, generating and sending donor acknowledgements, logging donor appreciation efforts
  • Supporting staff with logistics associated with special events, including assisting with the creation of invitation list, all logistics, soliciting sponsors, communicating with venue and vendors
  • Attending/Volunteering at special events
  • Tracking and evaluating all development efforts
  • Working with Board of Directors Development Committee to implement development strategies

Ideal Candidates Must:

  • Be responsible, flexible, hard‐working, ethical, and committed to the mission of Well Aware
  • Possess a high level of organizational skills and be detail oriented
  • Possess solid oral and written communication skills
  • Be skilled at a variety of computer skills, e.g., Google Drive, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat
  • Be able to operate standard office equipment
  • Able to handle multiple tasks at one time
  • Possess an interest in a nonprofit career ‐ particularly development and fundraising

Internships

Livestrong offers unpaid internships to current students and recent graduates interested in learning the inner workings of a nonprofit organization.

Organizational Support interns work to enhance internal and external communication in order to ensure that applicants and individuals who write in, call, or walk through our doors have a positive and engaging experience with the Foundation. OS interns primarily focus on internship program management including full-cycle recruitment (position posting, resume review, interviewing and on-boarding) while organizing social and professional development opportunities within a highly collaborative and dynamic team environment.

Finance interns assist in a wide variety of activities with many learning opportunities. This team member may assist with everything from transaction entry and audit preparation to budgeting and process improvement. The Finance intern should expect to learn technical skills related to accounting and reporting, as well as soft skills like judgment, critical thinking and communication. This internship is ideal for someone in pursuit of Business, Accounting, Economics or a similar focus. Enthusiasm and professional curiosity are required!

Events interns help Livestrong events staff as they organize events to engage constituents at all levels. This includes important data gathering, interacting with vendors, sponsors, participants, volunteers and other organizations to grow Livestrong events awareness, recruit participants and set up in-market activities. Additionally, interns assist event participants in developing successful fundraising plans to support their goals. Tasks include constituent communication, sharing fundraising tactics, fulfilling requests, and research and gather data on the event landscape and Livestrong event participants to help gage current events and new potential initiatives.

Development interns assist with projects that support the entire development team as we work to update and maintain accurate constituent records. Interns assist with donor stewardship, creating and running reports for prospect/donor events, data analysis, and conducting basic research on individual, corporate or foundation prospects.

Digital Marketing Production interns assist with all ongoing digital marketing efforts. This includes, but is not limited to, strategically generating content for Livestrong’s social media and blog, creating data analytics reports, working on email marketing campaigns and managing one or more Google platforms. The ideal candidate will have a passion to learn, communicate well within a team and be process-oriented and deadline-driven.

Mission interns support the development, implementation, and execution of Livestrong’s strategic mission and objectives. This role may include support in the organization’s delivery of patient-centered services, building and engaging communities of survivors, and leading systems change through a variety of initiatives. Interns will support Livestrong’s mission by interacting with local and national partners to impact the cancer landscape and address gaps in cancer care. Interns should have an interest in the healthcare field, and be comfortable conducting research and evaluation. Ideal candidates should have great communication and writing skills, be highly organized and have the ability to work on multiple projects at once. This is a great position for someone interested in nonprofit management, program building, community outreach, and stakeholder engagement.

Grant Interns assist the Director of Grants Management in a variety of tasks that ensures the Livestrong Solution Grants program recognizes and funds organizations who are developing cutting edge, inventive, and sustainable solutions to overlooked cancer problems. Tasks may include updating the grant application and review process, evaluating best practices, communicating with grantseekers, and writing summary reports. Ideal candidates should have a general interest in grantseeking and grantmaking practices, or an interest to learn more about philanthropic giving. Grants interns will strengthen their communication, data collection, and research skills. They should be highly organized, and able to handle multiple projects at once. Grants Interns assist in preparing for and completing the grantmaking cycle, in addition to assisting in the facilitation of the Livestrong Solution Series: monthly online webinars designed to foster collaboration and conversation among cancer organizations.

Strategic Solutions Interns will have the opportunity to conduct research, create reporting systems, work through new ideas and connect others to our work. While this position sits on the mission side of Livestrong, it may also reach into the strategy building arena and work with other departments as well. While no two semesters will be the same, the ideal applicant will be able to adapt quickly, have an understanding of all Office software systems, be comfortable on the telephone and enjoy change and challenge. This position offers a flexible work schedule and requires the ability to work autonomously. Reports directly to the Chief Strategic Solutions and Programs Officer.

Requirements

Interns will be paired with a team member for one-on-one virtual or in-person mentorship to gain experience in their area of interest.

  • Be available to work 12–20 hours per week virtually or during regular business hours at Livestrong HQ in Austin, Texas.
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills and a high level of computer competency.
  • Be self-motivated, organized, willing to help with any project no matter how large or small and be able to balance multiple priorities at once.
  • Have a strong desire to make a difference, a passion for the Livestrong mission, a positive attitude and an affinity for the color yellow.
  • Be able to provide their own housing and transportation if planning to work in-person at Livestrong HQ in Austin, Texas (must be wearing mask at all times).
  • Be video call savvy and able to manage and navigate online platforms and tools.
