All Internships Require:

  • A total of 180 hours of work (eligible for university credit as defined by the school program). Preference for interns who can work set days each week.
  • Must be able to commute to Austin, Texas (the office is located in north Austin).
  • Must pass all screening requirements including full criminal background check.
  • 2 years of college study preferred.

Case Assistant Internship (Missing Children’s Division), Austin, Texas

  • Spring 2014 position filled; considering for Summer and Fall 2014.
  • Provide technical assistance to families, law-enforcement and social-service agencies, and courts with issues related to missing and exploited children.
  • Conduct computer database searches.
  • Network with law-enforcement and state agencies to help resolve cases.

 Outreach & Programs Internship, Austin, Texas

  • Assist community & educational outreach staff (preparing presentations, training & conducting community outreach, and completing special projects).
  • Internet research (on current child abduction & exploitation trends as well as data to increase community partnerships).
  • Attend various on-site training seminars and presentations. Learn to give NetSmartz® presentations in the community.

 Development Internship, Austin, Texas

  • Planning and logistics for fundraising activities.
  • Data entry (training provided for fundraising database); experience using Excel to manage multiple projects.
  • Excellent writing skills (English and/or Communication majors preferred but not required); excellent verbal communication skills and ability to work with community donors. Social media experience a plus.
  • The Texas Regional Office will hold its signature fundraising event on Saturday, September 13, 2014. Experience with special events a plus but not required; participation on the day and evening of the event preferred.

Austin Partners in Education

Austin Partners in Education (APIE) creates and fosters effective community and school partnerships that provide all Austin ISD students preparation for college and career.  APIE’s goal is to improve academic achievement in reading and math in both elementary and middle school.  APIE also helps high school students who are looking to achieve “College Ready” status as described by the state.

APIE is looking for volunteers to help implement these programs and work with students using APIE curriculum.

Program Assistant

Hours per week:  10-15

Work Days/Times: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 8:00am-4:00pm

Assist students in reading and math.  Work and communicate with diverse groups of people.  Support academic improvement for children in high-needs schools in the Austin Independent School District.  Build your resume with impressive work experience and network with community members from all over Austin.   Program Assistants/ Tutors have the combined role of tutoring students in reading and/or math in elementary and/or middle schools and assisting the program staff in the coordination of our programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Tutor students in reading and/or math for a minimum of three hours per week
  • Substitute for absent volunteers
  • Attend assigned tutoring classes each week
  • Communicate with supervisor about schedule changes in a timely manner
  • Attend a two hour training on how to tutor students and use the curriculum
  • Assist with evaluation surveys
  • Provide administrative assistance to the program as needed

Qualifications:

  • For bilingual tutors: Spanish written and oral fluency
  • Organizational skills and flexibility a must
  • Excellent skills in oral and written communications
  • Ability to  effectively manage time and communicate schedule changes
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel and Internet Browsers
  • Valid driver’s license with access to reliable transportation

Schedule: 

  • Our opportunities are on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8am-4pm

Spring 2014 Internships Available in Oral History, Digital Archives, and Human Rights – 1/14 Deadline

Spring 2014 Internship Opportunity in Oral History, Digital Archives, and Human Rights

Description
In collaboration with the Austin-based Texas After Violence Project, the Rapoport Center Human Rights and Archives Working Group seeks 1-4 undergraduate interns for an exciting opportunity to learn about human rights and oral history by building an archive of personal stories told by people affected by the death penalty in Texas.  Interns will do vital work to advance the mission of the Texas After Violence Project by preparing “narrator pages” to be made available to the public through the UT Libraries Human Rights Documentation Initiative.  Interns will receive extensive training and support, including opportunities to discuss readings on the ethics and politics of incarceration, human rights, and archives.  Interns will learn how to use archiving software, and will participate in substantive archiving tasks–including transcribing, editing recorded testimonies, and creating content for narrator pages.

Eligibility
Although the internship opportunity might be most relevant for BDP students in Human Rights & Social Justice, Conflict Resolution & Peace Studies, Ethics & Leadership, and Social Entrepreneurship & Non-Profits, interested students in any BDP are encouraged to apply.
